EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
LASTO COMPUTER SERVICE is a computer retail establishment located
in Sungai Petani, Kedah and has 2 branches with their main office
being in Bandar Puteri Jaya and their branch store in Lagenda
Heights. Founder , Thor Kait Jui expects to garner the interest of the
locals and create a loyal customer based towards their Computer
Services. LASTO provides retail services such as buying and selling
computer hardware be it new or used , desktop or laptops. They even
sell printers, anything with a circuit and a motherboard inside, they
sell. Well, except phones. They also provide technical consulting and
cater to the specific needs of a customer’s request.

2012 was when it all started, Founded by brothers Thor Kait Jui and
Thor Kait Sion , they set out with a goal to become one of the leading
computer stores in Sungai Petani. Majorly a family owned business
Lasto Computer Service is a sole proprietorship business.

HISTORY
OF COMPANY

At the age of 24 , right after 2 years of working as


a board repair technician Thor Kait Jui took the
risk of opening up his own retail computer
establishment in 2012. He calls it Lasto Computer
Service, he told us Lasto was derived for Last,
being the last computer store you’ll ever need in
your life. He added the ‘O’ in just because he
thought it sounded cool. Lasto’s main business
model is in computers, printers and repair
services. Selling new and used deskstop PCs and
Laptops and a wide variety of printers in their
store. Lasto also does networking services,
setting up office network connections and also
does technical consulting for several big firms in
Sungai Petani.

Kait Jui sat down and told us about his journey


from after he finished his diploma in a polytechnic
up to the present day after he opened his second
branch in Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani. At the
age of 22 he finished his diploma in Electronic
Engineering and decided he didn’t want to pursue
a degree, instead he wanted to join the workforce.
He went on to become a board repair technician ,
dealing with motherboard repairs for about 2
years before deciding he wanted to open his own
store. In 2012 he got some capital from his parents
and a bank loan and he enlisted the help of his
younger brother , Thor Kait Sion to help manage
and run the first branch in Bandar Puteri Jaya.

Providing top tier customer service is also one of their aims , if you go to
their Google Review’s page you’ll see it’s mostly comments about their
friendly staff , and this is a fact. Their staff are very friendly and will talk to
you about anything. Kait Jui is adamant in making sure the customers are
satisfied and if there are customers who seem to not be able to afford a
service , Kait Jui himself will offer to pay some amount for them.

At the start they struggled being the only 2 workers in their store , but
business was booming they received over 30 computers and printers to be
repaired each day often sleeping in their store to finish all of the customer
jobs. But being computer enthusiasts they said the job wasn’t tiresome at
all they enjoyed the grind.Presently, Lasto has 2 branches , one in Bandar
Puteri Jaya ( The main branch , head office ) and a newer branch opened
in 2019 located in Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani . They employ 4 workers
in each store and they actively participate in internship programs. They
also have an online store now to increase their buying and selling capacity,
this section is mainly handled by the Bandar Puteri Jaya branch.

Business is mainly focused on retail and repairing desktops,


laptops and printers and provide IT consulting to buyers and
maintaining network servers for customers.In the year 2020
they shifted their focus towards selling refurbished desktops
and laptops for more budget oriented customers due to the
pandemic with more and more households requiring a
computer for work and study.

Work Experience
After graduating with a diploma in electronic engineering Thor Kait
Jui went on to work at GGA Technology as a motherboard repair
technician for several years , after which he decided to leave the
company for certain reasons and decided to start his own
company with his younger brother.

Family Background
Thor Kait Jui is the eldest of 5 siblings being the age of 33 years old.
He has 4 younger brothers and a single younger sister. Among the
5 siblings , three of the brothers are involved in the family-run
business , Lasto. Kait Jui , Kait Sion ( The 3rd Child) and Kait Xiang (
The youngest among the siblings ) work together in managing the
company. The 2nd sibling works as an insurance agent but also
has his hands in the company’s book keeping while the younger
sister does not have any relation to the company at all.Their mother
and father are relatively laid back, having a separate bus driving
business.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Strength
-Having multiple branches, one in Bandar Puteri Jaya and in Lagenda Heights
-Staff have a deep passion for computers and hardware
-Trained employees with certificates and diploma’s in the field of Information
Technology and Troubleshooting
-Wide market especially in this technological age
-Wide business networks with other entrepreneurs in the industry such as the
supplier network and competitors in the local area such as Mytron
Technologies

Weakness
-Lack of marketing, up until now they haven’t had a marketing department so
their marketing is very weak, even their facebook page does not garner that
much attention.
-Lack of financial management because they do not employ an accountant
and they don’t have a good system for book keeping.
-High supplier prices due to pandemic, with the manufacturer bringing up
prices , the supplier will also drive prices up and Lasto is struggling to keep up
with the high prices.

Opportunities
-Expansion of branches, they have even taken an interest in the Merbok area
as it does not have much competitors.
-Expansion of product range, each month there is a new piece of hardware
that comes out be it peripherals or integral computer hardware, they can
expand their range and variety.
-Government IT Contracts such as under Kementerian Pendidikan, they were
offered a contract to supply schools in the local area with computers for their
computer labs and network servers.
-Partnerships with local stores and offices to provide technical services

Threats
-Rising hardware prices due to Covid-
19 pandemic

-Saturated market for IT retailers , the


competition is very stiff as there are a
lot of retail establishments in this
market.

-Local nearby computer stores as


competitors, in their new branch
Lagenda Heights there is already 3
other computer stores acting as their
competitors.

-Economic downturn due to the


pandemic with people losing their jobs,
they can’t afford to buy as much as
they used to.

1. Sees and Acts on Opportunities


Thor Kait Jui is born Chinese , and we all know that Chinese people love to
take opportunities on anything that might be beneficial to their business and
he is no different, often taking on odd requests in the realm of Computer
Services such as providing rental services for desktop PC’s and going to
customer houses to troubleshoot their computers and even going as far as to
provide a Cash On Delivery service for customers who are farther away from
the store.

2.Information Seeking
Actively seeking information on the latest
and greatest products and advancements
in the Computer industry. He usually
watches videos about computer news (see
TechLinked on Youtube) during his break
time to keep in touch with the news and
trends.

3. Efficiency Orientation
Kait Jui makes it a habit to keep thinking of ways to improve upon the
efficiency of their repair services, just this year he has made more than 10
changes upon their workflow and it has proven to be beneficial to reduce wait
time and overall output of jobs. Such as converting two rooms at the back of
the store into work places for more repair jobs , creating a system to keep
track of where each computer is in the job pipeline and making sure each
staff member is working on 2 jobs each at once.

4. Assertiveness
Whenever a staff member or supplier brews trouble for the store he takes it
upon himself to talk to confront them about whatever issues they might have
and tells them how to fix their mistakes. For example he told us , there used to
be a staff member that repeatedly made mistakes in which he would
accidentally delete customer’s data and in some instances very important
data ( PDRM’s Data ) , Kait Jui would often talk to this staff member and give
him advice to help him fix the mistake. Sooner or later, the staff member
would learn his lesson and the rate of failure subsequently disappeared.

5. Persuasion
Whenever you’re trying to make
someone do something you need to
have a certain trait, and that is
persuasiveness. Being the boss
demands you to have that trait and
Kait Jui has it. Whenever an angry
customer walks in the store wanting
to raise hell , 10 minutes later he’ll
walk out being cool as a cucumber.
He’ll also use his persuasiveness to
get a lower price from the suppliers
adding to the profit he makes.
