Infinitives and Gerunds general information

● Infinitives-> to+ main verb


○ May work as an adjective, noun or an adverb
○ Example:
■ The decision to quit my job was tough (infinitive working as an adjective)

● Gerund -> verb+ing


○ Works as a noun; therefore, we may start sentences with them
○ Example
■ Getting a job is my top priority( the Gerund is working as a noun and as the
subject of the sentence)
○ Take into account that a Gerund in the position of subject is always singular and
takes a singular verb
■ Example
● Speaking three languages is hard
Infinitives

● Infinitives might work as a reduction of in order to which shows a purpose of


doing something
○ Example
■ The official quickly hired a new manager to achieve their goals

● There's no obvious rhyme or reason to account for which verbs must follow
an infinitive you need to memorize which verbs are normally followed by an
infinitive

Gerund

● They often follow the verb go when it is a sport or a leisure activity


● Gerund act as the subject or after certain verbs
● Gerunds often appear after prepositions like for, about, of or on
○ Example
■ Thank you for doing this favor for me
■ They always argue about spending too much money
■ The president is not in favor of traveling to that area now
■ The children kept on talking.
