Students should be able to look up books by title, author, keyword, and genre on OPAC.

Students should be able to correctly use the self-check-out method for books and the self-check-in methods for books in

Atriuum.

This video is short, for younger students, and pretty basic. This will be used as the basis for the main lesson.
Students will the watch a very quick video on self-check-in and self-check-out in the library with a theme song: How to

Central Part of Lesson/Main Activities:

The teacher will pass out handouts to students all students. These handouts will include screenshots, and images to help

all students, but especially ELL and Special education students.

Librarian will show students how to use OPAC.

Librarian will show students how to use self-check-in and self-check-out

Closers/”Tickets out the Door”:

Teacher will review OPAC and self-check-in and self-check-out information on a short slideshow with pictures and screen

shots.

Students will fill out an exit ticket as they search for a book using OPAC, find that book on the shelf, and then use self-

check-in on the library computers/ laptops. Students may need assistance from the librarian or teacher to fill out their

exit ticket.

Students will turn in their exit ticket before leaving the library.

Students will fill out an exit ticket while they complete the process of both using OPAC to find a book, and using Atriuum

to self-check-out a library book.

Materials/Equipment Needed:

Projector or computer hooked up to large TV screen. Computers or laptops for researching books on OPAC, computers

or laptops hooked up to the digital barcode scanner for using the self-check-in and self-check-out methods in Attriuum.

How lesson plan aligns with TPACK framework:

The classroom teacher and the Librarian will work together to plan this lesson and present this lesson to students. It will

incorporate some 2nd grade English Contest standards as well as ISTE tech standards. The teacher and library will use

both their knowledge of content standards, technological pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical knowledge to

collaborate on this lesson, teach this lesson, assess this lesson, and have students try out using technology to find and

self-check-out books.
Strategies for differentiation for diverse student groups:

Print out handouts for ELL and Special Ed students with specific image and graphics showing the process of both

searching for information on OPAC and for self-check-in and self-check-out. These may include specific steps, images or

screenshots from the programs, etc.

Describe how the scholarly article you found contributed to the development of this lesson plan?

The scholarly article I found is about younger elementary students struggling with using technology, specifically OPAC to

find books. However, I think with today’s students (this article was published in 2012) they will have little to no issue

using OPAC, especially if they use the picture options. Given that librarians can customize OPAC for their own students,

they can customize the types of pictures shown, the types of books shown, etc. Teachers should have no problem

navigating the OPAC site to find the books they want with assistance from their teacher or librarian. The positive part is

that students can click the visual tab and click icons like “animals” or “sports” to search for topics or titles of books.

Students that struggle with reading or ELL students may prefer using the visual tab over typing in the book or author of

their choice. The process will some take time for 2 nd graders to master, but with much practice, they will know how to

search for their own books, self-check-in and self-check-out books without teacher or librarian assistance.
