☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

For this lesson, students will be participating in the pre-planning stages of writing their narratives.
This lesson is designed for the flipped classroom approach to learning. Students will listen to a
podcast that introduces the content they will be learning about in class the next day. So, students
should have listened to a podcast recording that will prompt students to start thinking about what
story they want to write. This way they have already started brainstorming by the time they arrive to
class. I did this so that students would be better prepared when they start making their story maps.
Their story maps will help them flush out their narratives starting with the major plot points. They
will add in more detail later in the writing process. Once we meet in class the next day, I will go over
what a story map looks like, what it does, what each element is, and what those elements should
look like. I will provide an example for students to look at and I will walk them through it. Students
will then work on making their own story maps for their narratives. I will be available to answer any
student questions, provide feedback on their ideas, and help them work through any areas they get
stuck on. Any students who finish early may start flushing out details in a rough draft. Eventually, in
another lesson, students will complete a final draft of their narratives that they will then turn into
ebook presentations.

Managing student learning:
The intention for having students listen to the lesson the night before class is to encourage active thinking
and learning. By this I mean that students are introduced to the lesson topic in the audio/video which they
can then watch and listen to it as many times as they need. It prepares them for what we will be doing in class
the next day, allows them time to think about the topic and generate questions or even start working ahead.
We can then use our time in class more productively because the lesson acts more like review and students
can ask their clarifying questions or share their thoughts.
As most lessons, there will be set time limits for how long each part of the lesson, class discussion, Q&A, and
student work time can last. For this lesson, it would be ideal that all students have some kind of note written
down in their writing journal about what their narrative will be about or at least some of their ideas. This will
help reduce the time students would “waste” simply sitting and thinking. Since they already have a rough idea
of what they are going to write, they can spend more time on making their story maps, reviewing, editing,
and filling in the details that will go into their rough and final drafts. The “Ask 3 then Me” rule will be applied
as usual if they have questions about their task; although it may be a bit more relaxed if students want
feedback on their stories. Students also must show me their finished story map before they can move onto
their rough drafts. They are not expected to finish more than their story maps, but students may work ahead.

I really want students to be thinking about their writing before, during, and after our lesson.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:

This lesson primarily targeted the UDL principle of Multiple Means of Engagement. Students will
have two opportunities to learn about the topic and activity we will be doing. First, they will have the
flipped classroom podcast that they will be instructed to listen to at least the night before class. This
is so that they will already know what topic we will be learning about in class, allow them time to
generate questions, possibly work ahead, review the lesson as many times as needed, allow time to
conduct research, and simply be somewhat more prepared for class so that they aren’t entering the
lesson blindly. Both the audio and the transcript are available for students to listen too and read as
many times as necessary. This benefits students with and without auditory and/or visual
impairments. Some students also need extra time to learn the material at their own pace. It also
gives us more time in class to ask and answer questions, work one-on-one, and focus more on
specific pieces of information from the lesson. There’s also the added bonus of students getting
practice using technology to enhance their learning. This will also later lead into a lesson where
students use their writing and technology to create an ebook.

Reflection:
I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to expand on my ebook lesson plan so this flushed out pretty
quickly. I loved writing in school, and I want students to be excited about it too. There’s something
satisfying about watching a jumbled mix of random ideas become a cohesive creative work. I look
forward to seeing the ideas students have for their stories and how they will evolve in the short time
that the lesson takes. I’m also excited to see how far students will get in their creative process (aka,
if they’ll be starting on their rough draft by the end of the lesson). I want to help students bring their
creative ideas to life by providing commentary and feedback when necessary or even when asked.
Since the students will eventually be creating ebooks that they will present to the class, I want to see
them be excited and proud of their creations.
