Lesson Idea Name: Magnetic Podcast

Grade Level/Content Area: First Grade/ To Attract or Not to Attract

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1.3 Knowledge Constructor- Students critically able to do by the end of this lesson:
curate a variety of resources using digital tools to Within this lesson, I want the students to be able
construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts to learn the different types of magnetic fields by
and make meaningful learning experiences for developing different strategies which helps them
themselves and others. gain a better understanding of the material. Also,
within the lesson I want the students to be able
to use digital tools to create an instructional
podcast based off what they have learned.
Within the students work they should be able to
understand why some objects are magnetic
while others are not. Not only should the
students be able to determine what is magnetic,
but why are some metals not magnetic.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
The overall learning goal is for student to be able to understand and apply the know that they have
of magnets, in which they are able to know what a magnetic field is as well as the different fields.
Also, for the students to demonstrate the material that they have learned through the use digital
tools that allows students to find ways to express themselves.
Selected Instructional Software Tool:
Anchor

Description of Software:
Anchor is an audio podcast tool which allows for individuals to create audio content to express what
they have learned. Also, Anchor allows for teaching content to be made to help further the
knowledge of others. Not only does this source provide students with audio content, but it also
provides students with a transcript of the text. This software is simple and visually appealing which
makes it easy for teachers and students to navigate. Once teachers or anyone creates content, they
can share it across numerous different platforms to allow for learning to be accessed from
anywhere.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
At the start of this lesson the students with be provided with an instructional lesson provided by the
teacher as well as an audio book that allows the students to build their knowledge. During this
lesson, I would provide each one of my students with magnets in which I will then divide the
students into several different groups that has one magnet per group. Within these groups the
students will be given a 5-minute timer to go around the classroom and find how many objects are
magnetic. Each group will be giving the same amount of time to determine which group can find the
most magnetic items. Afterwards, we will come together as a class and discuss why these objects are
attracted by the magnet. Once the students have had their class discussion, they will be instructed
on how to use the audio tool Anchor in which they will create an audio podcast expressing what they
have learned. Also, they will use this as an instructional tool to teach others what they have learned.
Managing student learning:
As a teacher it is important to be able to manage students from moving from passive to active social
learners. By allowing the students to move from passive to active learners by allowing them to have
a set time limit to work through a group task. Also, by allowing the students to work in groups allow
them to be helpful for those students who are having a difficult time understanding the material to
be paired with those who exceed to learn from one another. By allowing the students to use the
audio podcast tool it allows to develop different creative ways that they can express what they have
learned while also teaching others.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
As a teacher it is important to ensure that students are meeting all the standards while also allowing
providing students with multiple means of learning. Within this lesson students are provided with
numerous ways of learning the material such as providing the students with verbal teacher
instructions as well as providing the students with an audio book. The audio book is both beneficial
for visual and audio needs for those students, also by having access to audio books allows students
to be able to gain access of the material from anywhere. Also, the audio book can be read in other
languages to allow for those non-English learners. I find it to be most beneficial to allow students to

work in groups and communicate with one another to learn while also learning communication
skills. This lesson provides students with multiple means of representation by allowing students to
ensure that each student is understanding the material. Throughout these lessons instructional time
the students are given teacher led instruction, an audio book for non-English learners, as wells as a
hands-on activity to help further the knowledge of all learners. When designing lessons for students
it is important to establish enough material to ensure that all students are being reached.

Reflection:
As a teacher, I feel as though that this lesson idea will allow the students to participate as a class and
get their creative minds flowing. Not only will this lesson teach the students that not every object is
magnetic, but it also allows the students to see how the different sides of the magnet will either pull
or repel away from the object. Also, I enjoy using group work to allow the students to learn how to
communicate with one another, as well as lets the students act as a teacher to one another. By
allowing the students to develop their own audio podcast will allow them to express what they have
learned. The most excited parts I look forward to implementing with in the classroom the use of
digital tools to allow students to create their own material that they can look back on a learn from
while also instructing other. Not only does this allow to create material for this topic, but it allows
them to be adventurous and create content on their own time.
