FINAL EXAM: CELLULAR PHONE (200 PTS.)

1. What is the most important advantage of cellular radio systems over trunked systems?
 The most important advantage of cellular radio systems over trunked systems are,
it has increased capacity, it consumes less power, it can be distributed to larger
coverage area, and it reduces interference from other signals.
2. Why is it important for the base station to be able to control the power level of the mobile
station’s transmitter?
 It is important for the base station to be able to control the power level of the
mobile station’s transmitter because a base station serves as a central connection
point for a wireless device to communicate. It further connects the device to other
networks or devices, usually through dedicated high bandwidth wire or fiber optic
connections, and with these, the transmission will be successful.
3. Is the ban on receivers for the cellular band in the United States an effective deterrent to
eavesdropping? Explain.
 No. It’s not an effective deterrent because eavesdropping is a prevailing threat
among many on mobile phones, with technology capable of tracking users,
listening to their conversations and even logging their application usage becoming
more pervasive and easier to come by. So, there’s no way it can be a deterrent.
4. What would be the effect of using audio compression without the corresponding
expansion?
 There would be a huge effect. These opposites namely audio compression, and
audio expansion correlates with each other. Since, audio compression reduces the
dynamic range of your recording by bringing down the level of the loudest parts,
the audio expansion expands the dynamic range of a signal. Without the audio
expansion, the dynamic range of the audio signal would not be possible.
5. What is the difference between call blocking and call dropping?
 The difference between call blocking and call dropping is that call blocking is an
event that can occur only before the call is completed between the called and the
calling parties, while call dropping is an event that can occur only after the call is
connected and the exchange of talks has started.
6. Why is cellular modem operation more satisfactory than from a moving vehicle?
 A cellular modem operation is more satisfactory than from a moving vehicle
because cellular modem operation can penetrate or generate signal well from the
internet of their SIM because there was no interruption from the transmission of
signals than a moving vehicle which an interruption of signals can be observed.
7. Why does a digital cellular system allow more simultaneous conversations with the same
numbers of channels as an analog system?
 A digital cellular system allows more simultaneous conversations with the same
numbers of channels as an analog system because voice data that has been
converted to digital information that is compressed so that it takes up significantly
less transmission space. Therefore, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) has
three times the capacity of an analog system using the same number of channels.
8. What are the differences between mobile phones, and portable phones from the point of
view of cellular system?
 The differences between mobile phones, and portable phones from the point of
view of cellular system is that a mobile phones are a wireless handheld device that
allows users to make and receive calls anytime, anywhere as long as there is a
signal, while portable phones are telephones which has a portable handset but
which one can use like landline phone communication; such telephones operate
using radio-frequency transmission rather than a physical insulated wire or a
direct connection to a telephone line. And also, mobile phones have a wide
coverage that you can carry it anywhere unlike portable phones which has a
limited coverage.
