Counters for hours and minutes


To specify the length of time needed for an activity, use the counters 時間 jikan (hours) and 分
fun (minutes) and the verb かかる kakaru (to take, to cost). For example, 1時間15分かかります
Ichi-jikan jū-go-fun kakarimasu means It takes one hour and 15 minutes. Here we are talking
about the length of time needed for an activity rather than the time of day.

Sentence-ending particles ね ne and よ yo


End a sentence with ね ne if you want to get an agreement to your statement. End a sentence with
よ yo if you want to emphasize your statement. For example:
いい天気ですね。
Ii tenki desu ne.
It’s a nice weather, isn’t it?
日本語は簡単ですよ。
Nihongo wa kantan desu yo.
Japanese is easy, I tell you!

de ni-jū-go-fun desu. Watashi wa daigaku no eigo no gakusei desu. Daigaku ni wa basu to
chikatetsu de ikimasu. Ichi-jikan kakarimasu.
