PAST CONTINUOUS – se foloseste:

Pentru o actiune in desfasurare intr-un moment defint din trecut. Nu se stie cand actiunea a inceput:
She was cooking dinner at two o'clock in the afternoon. – Ea gatea cina la ora doua dupa amiaza.
Doua sau mai multe actiuni in desfasurare in acelasi timp in trecut (actiuni simultane):
Dad was washing the car while the children were cutting the grass. – Tata spala masina in timp ce copii taiau iarba.
Pentru a descrie atmosfera si a oferi informatii despre fundalul unei povesti:
The sun was shining and the birds were singing that spring morning in New Orleans. - Soarele stralucea si pasarile cantau in acea dimineata de primavara.
Pentru o actiune in desfasurare in trecut, intrerupta de o actiune trecuta scurta. Actiunea in desfasurare este exprimata prin past continuous si
actiunea care a intrerupt-o este exprimata prin past simple.
Mary was having (Past Continuous) a shower when the phone rang (Past Simple). – Mari facea un dus cand a sunat telefonul.

- while (in timp ce) + Past Continuous
