Name of the experiment: DETERMINATION DISCHARGE AND MEAN VELOCITY OF
AN OPEN CHANNEL

Objectives:
1. To determine the total discharge and mean velocity of the flow.
2. To calculate Manning’s n and Chezy’s C.
3. To plot n and C against depth of flow and observe the relationship.

Experimental Setup:

Figure: Experimental setup used during the experiment

Apparatus:
Current meter, Open channel etc.
Procedure:
1. To determine the total discharge and mean velocity of the flow:
1. Divide the channel section into 3 vertical segments.
2. Measure the depth of flow at the middle of each vertical strip.
3. Measure mean velocity at every vertical.
4. Calculate discharge through each strip.
5. Calculate total discharge and compare it with the actual discharge.
6. Calculate the mean velocity.

2. To calculate Manning’s n and Chezy’s C:

1. Find the value of x at each vertical and find average value of x.
2. By this average value of x calculate n.
3. With the value of n calculate C.

3. To plot n and C against depth of flow:

1. For every depth of flow the value of n and C will be derived.
2. Plot n verses depth of flow in a plain graph paper.
3. Plot C verses depth of flow in a plain graph paper.

Result:
From calculation we see that,
The value of Manning’s n=0.010733
The value of Chezy’s C=69.74
Total discharge in the stream, Q = 0.0654 m3/s
Mean velocity of the stream, V = 0.2477 m/s

DISCUSSION:
1. In this experiment, total discharge was determined by adding the different
discharge values found for each strip. The total discharge value was found 0.0654 m3/s
which is close to the actual discharge, 0.06 m3/s. So, we can say that, the experiment
was done very carefully.
2. The shape of the Manning’s n vs depth of flow curve was parabolic and positively
decreasing. That means the relation between manning’s n and depth of flow(y) is
inversely proportional. If the depth of flow increases, the value of Manning’s n
decreases.
3. The Chezy’s C vs depth of flow curve behaves differently than the other curve. Its
shape was parabolic and positively increasing which means that the relation between
the Chezy’s C and depth of flow (y) is proportional. The value of C increases with the
increasing value of y.
4. The value of Manning’s n and Chezy’s C were found 0.010733 and 69.74
respectively. Two graphs were plotted in plain graph to observe their relationship with
depth of flow and the curves were best fitted curves.
