2.0 Load Calculations

This section presents the calculation of the loads applied on the robot model.

BF Backfill on Top slab

1) For chamber

Height H2 = 0.0 m

Density of back fill material = 20 kN/m³

(Bulk Density)

Area of Top slab excl. openings = 13.00 · 9.0 - 0.0 = 117.0 m²

(area of smaller roof slab after penstock is not included as it has a very big cutout)

Weight = 117.0 · 20 · 0.0 = 0 kN

2) For Box Culvert

Height H1 = 15.6 m

Density of back fill material = 20 kN/m³

(lower value is taken as it is conservative for design)

Area of Top slab excl. openings = 8.00 · 6.3 - 0.0 = 50.4 m²

Weight = 50.4 · 20 · 15.6 = 15725 kN

Total Weight = 0 + 15725 = 15725 kN

TS Top slab

1) Weight of top slab of chamber = 117.0 · 0.80 · 25 = 2340 kN

2) Weight of top slab of box culvert = 50.4 · 1.00 · 25 = 1260 kN

Total Weight of top slabs = 2340 + 1260 = 3600 kN

1.0 Uplift check

The stabilizing force is calculated as follows

Self-weight for Walls = 25089 kN

Self weight base slab = 8434 kN

Self weight top slab = 1260 kN

(only top slab weight of box culvert is considered)

Self weight Backfill = 15725 kN

Total stabilizing forces Gstb,k = 50507 kN

The design stabilizing force Gstb,d is 0.9 x Gstb,k = 45457 kN

The destabilizing force is calculated based on the design water level

according to Design Basis, section 1.5 (l) as follows:

A) Uplift force calculation for Chamber :

Design water head 12.00 - -11.06 = 23.06 m

(Design water level - Bottom of base slab)

Embedment depth 12.00 - -11.06 = 23.06 m

(Ground level - Bottom of base slab)

The water pressure at the bottom of the base slab is calculated based on the design water

level. The design water level is the maximum of the following two values.

1 × Design water head = 23.06 m

Maximum
1.1 × Height of the shaft below ground = 25.37 m
level

Water pressure below base slab = 253.7 kN/m2

Area of base slab including toes = 143.00 m2

Destabilizing force = 36273 kN

B) Uplift force calculation for Box Culvert :

Design water head 12.00 - -11.36 = 23.36 m

(Design water level - Bottom of Curved base slab) (Conservative)

Embedment depth 12.00 - -11.36 = 23.36 m

(Ground level - Bottom of Curved base slab) (Conservative)

The water pressure at the bottom of the base slab is calculated based on the design water

level. The design water level is the maximum of the following two values.

1 × Design water head = 23.36 m

Maximum
1.1 × Height of the shaft below ground = 25.70 m
level

Water pressure below base slab = 257.0 kN/m2

Area of base slab including toes = 81.90 m2

Destabilizing force = 21045 kN

Thus,

Total Destabilizing force for the structure = 57318 kN

The design destabilzing force Vdst,d is 1.0 × 57318 = 57318 kN

The calculation reveals that the destabilizing force is larger than the stabilizing force, i.e.

Vdst,d = 57318 kN > 45457 kN = Gstb,d UNSAFE!

Factor of safety (Sec 1.5 (l) of DBR) = 0.79 < 1

UNSAFE!

Since the structure is being uplifting under hydrostatic pressure we will consider soil backfill

weight on toe slab of box culvert and chamber.

21.56

2.50

Length of toe along wall TW4 = 8.3 m

Width of toe = 2.5 m

Length of toe along wall TW3 = 0.0 m

Width of toe = 2.5 m

Area of soil column = 20.8 m2

Total Area of soil column considering both the sides = 41.5 m2

Depth of cyclopean concrete = 0.00 m

Volume of cyclopean concrete = 0.00 × 41.5 = 0.0 m3

Depth of soil column = 21.56 m

Volume of existing soil = 21.56 × 41.5 = 894.7 m3

Density of mass concrete = 24.0 kN/m3

Density of soil backfill = 20.0 kN/m3

Weight of cyc concrete on toe = 0 kN

Weight of soil column on toe = 17895 kN

Total weight on toe = 17895 kN

The design stabilzing force Gstb,d is 0.9 × 17895 = 16105 kN

The calculation reveals that the destabilizing force is larger than the stabilizing force, i.e.

Vdst,d = 57318 kN < 61562 kN = Gstb,d Ok.
