Revision’s worksheet and correction

Part I - Reading comprehension

Read the following text carefully .

Binge-watching is a relatively new TV viewing behaviour that has the

viewer making an active choice to watch series hour after hour after
hour.
In the old days people watched one episode a week. Now they watch
several episodes in a single stretch1. Digital video recorders and Internet streaming services have made
this possible. TV programming is changing too: we now have TV marathons of popular shows like The
Simpsons or How I met your mother.
The biggest challenge of binge-watching is avoiding spoilers2 in the news media, on
social networks and in casual conversations.
Friends on Facebook avoid giving details, but they often say enough to let you know
that something surprising is about to happen. We also lose the sense of time by binge-watching. Many
television shows follow the seasons. Characters mark Christmas in December and Valentine's Day in
February. When we binge-watch, we don't always know if something we watched just four hours ago really
took place four weeks or four months ago. Finally, binge-watching takes the pleasure out of thinking about
what is going to happen. Instead of challenging our minds to guess possible outcomes following a
cliffhanger3, we simply press “play” to find out in the next episode.
Some say binge-watching is an awesome way to unwind and relax. However,
viewing can take a bit of a toll on your body, so it's best to be prepared. Balance it with
these tips.

Pick a date, a show and good company

It's easy to just fall into a TV binge: you're tired after a long day of school or work and
all of a sudden you've been on the couch for eight hours. Control your viewing time, invite your best
friends, watch your favourite shows, talk about them, have dinner together and make an event of it.

Prepare some healthy food

Avoid eating junk food. Consider having some air-popped popcorn, grapes or baby carrots on hand. Make
relatively healthy food choices.

Take breaks

Health experts say that staring at a screen too long and sitting for a long time also pose
health risks. As soon as one episode ends, move around for five minutes, stretch out or just get some water
in the kitchen before pressing play on the next.

Vocabulary Box 1 - single stretch — one period of time

Part III - Writing

Hi mate,

How are you?

I’m writing to tell you about a film I watched last night with my parents at home.

The film is the Lord of the Rings which is a fantasy and adventure film. It was directed by Peter Jackson
and it stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen amongst others.

It is set in the fictional world of middle-earth and the protagonist is Frodo, who is a hobbit.

The film tells the story of Frodo and a group of friends that go on a quest to destroy the one ring and
ensure the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.

I really enjoyed watching this film because I love adventure films and I am fascinated with the sword
fighting's of the middle ages.

You must come and watch it with me!

Take it easy,

Signature
