Notes #3 – Doing Things Right

Self-control is being able to direct, hold back, or guide our feelings and actions. Self-discipline is a careful
training of oneself.
Self-control and self-discipline help us conquer temptations to do bad things.
As a person matures, he or she is able to control his or her desires and wants according to a set of rules and
regulations. He or she begins to develop self-discipline that helps him or her decide to do the correct things
and what is morally right.
We can develop and practice self-discipline and self-control by controlling our emotions and desires. We
persevere calmly when faced with difficulties.
The following are tips or suggestions on how we can discipline and take full control of ourselves.
1. Let us make a personal inventory. We can begin by taking a day –to-day inventory of our bad habits and
destructive cravings or desires.
2. Let us start small. Let us reduce each habit or craving a little each day. Let us keep a journal of our progress.
3. Let us practice self-denial. We target a daily activity like excessive eating or watching television.
4. Let us keep a schedule. We make a to-do list and stick to it. We make a commitment to accomplish every task.
5. Let us review. At the end of each day, we sit down and critique our performance. We mentally relive how we
exercised self-control over our cravings and habits.
Things to Remember:
I can develop and practice self-discipline and self-control by controlling my emotions and desires. I persevere calmly
when faced with difficulties.
