3. The contest shall consist of two (2) qualifying rounds (one written and one
oral), a semifinal round, and a final round.
4. For every round, each contestant will be provided with seven (7) scratch
papers for solutions. In case additional scratch papers are needed,
contestants may request them from the ushers assisting during the conduct
of the competition. All used scratch papers must be surrendered at the end
of each round.
5. Should tie(s) exist for the last qualifying slot(s) of any qualifying round,
there shall be a clincher round for the participants in contention until all
ties are broken. Refer to Details and Mechanics for comprehensive
information.
6. The use of cameras will not be allowed inside the venue. Anybody who
wishes to have their picture taken may approach the official photographers
for the event.
7. For participants, mobile phones and other communication devices will not
be allowed while any round is ongoing. If a participant is caught using
communication devices during the contest proper, they will be disqualified.

1. Each question will be read twice by the quizmasters. The question,

choices, and relevant figures will be projected on a screen in front of the
contestants.
2. The main category under which the question falls will be indicated, along
with the allotted time for each question.
3. The time provided will only start running once the quizmaster has finished
reading the question statement, choices, and specifying the allotted time.
Even still, participants may start attempting to solve the question as soon
as the question is projected on the screen or the quizmaster starts reading
the question.
4. Once the allotted time has elapsed, the quizmaster will announce that the
time is up. The participants must raise their boards (from second to fourth
rounds) and display their answers as soon as the quizmaster asks them to
do so.
1. For computations, round off your final answer to two (2) decimal places
with correct units unless otherwise specified or the answer required is a
whole number (i.e. 9 – 20mm diameter bars). Only the final answer may be
rounded off; rounding off intermediate values may cause enough deviation
to render your answer ‘incorrect’.
2. The required format for the answer may be specified for some questions
(i.e. three decimal places, two significant figures, exact form [fraction,
radical, etc.]). Failure to comply with the required format may render their
answer incorrect.
3. If the question asks for a tangible and countable item, round up the final
answer in whole numbers (e.g., 9 bars, not 8.36 bars; 1445 vehicles, not
1444.74 vehicles; 103 423 people, not 102,422.54 people).
4. For multiple choice questions, the participant may simply write the
UPPERCASE letter of their final answer.
5. For identification-type problems, answers shall be stated in complete
words—spelled out correctly. Acronyms will be considered incorrect unless
otherwise specified.
6. For other questions where choices are not provided, the final answers
should indicate the proper unit as specified in the problem unless units are
not required. Any answer without the correct unit will be considered
incorrect.
The competition shall consist of four (4) rounds in total - hereinafter
referred to as “Battles” in reference to the event’s theme of the HBO series
“Game of Thrones:”

Battle of the Blackwater: Written Qualifying Round

"The greater the level of difficulty, the greater the points"

Battle Beyond the Wall: Oral Qualifying Round

"The faster the participant correctly answers, the greater the points"
Battle of Winterfell: Semi-Finals Round

"The lesser number of participants who get the correct answer, the greater
the points"
Battle of King’s Landing: Finals Round

"Correct answers and the strategic use of power-ups will propel

participants to the “race” toward the Iron Throne"

Only a specific number of top scorers will advance to the next battles. The
Top scorer of the Final Battle shall be declared the rightful owner of the
Iron Throne - the one true king/queen - of DTMNCEQS 2022, while the two
succeeding top scorers shall be recognized as First- and Second Runner-
ups, respectively.
1. BATTLE OF BLACKWATER: WRITTEN QUALIFYING ROUND

“You’re in the great game now…” Shall we begin?

Raise your banners, for a new reign awaits the realm – starting from
the First Qualifying Round of this year’s DTM-NCEQS. Much like the
Battle at the Blackwater Bay in Game of Thrones, this round shall test
the participants’ wits and intellectual capacities through a written
qualifying examination consisting of fifty (50) civil engineering
questions – and only the mightiest 50 participants shall outlive this
round and proceed to the next battles.

1. QUESTIONS: The battle consists of fifty (50) written multiple-

choice type questions with four (4) choices each. Each
questionnaire comprises thirty (30) easy questions, fifteen (15)
average questions, and five (5) difficult questions, with varying
points.
2. POINTING SYSTEM: Easy questions are worth three (3) points,
Average questions are worth five (5) points, and Difficult questions
are worth seven (7) points – hence, each participant can garner up
to 200 points in total. Below is a tabulated pointing system for
reference:

3. TIME LIMIT: The time allotment for the examination will be 2

hours and 30 minutes.
4. ANSWERING SHEET: The participants will be given a copy of
the questionnaire, which shall likewise serve as their scratch
papers. A separate answer sheet will be given, where they will
shade their final answers. Once the time elapses, participants
must submit their answer sheets along with the questionnaire to
the ushers.
5. CONCERNS: No queries or concerns about the questions may
be brought up in this round.
6. TOP SCORERS: Only the Top 50 Scorers will proceed to the next
round—the Battle Beyond the Wall.
7. TIE BREAKER: Should there be ties for the last qualifying slots,
additional clincher round questions shall be given until all ties are
broken.

2. BATTLE BEYOND THE WALL: ORAL QUALIFYING ROUND

Night gathers, and now your watch begins.

Winter is coming for the guards pledged to shield the realms of men—
and just as how the Battle Beyond the Wall in Game of Thrones
required them to act swiftly in their war against the dead, the
participants of this qualifying round are called to have their speed in
solving questions tested. Only the 20 mightiest participants will survive
and bring news back to Winterfell.

1. QUESTIONS: The battle consists of 20 multiple-choice type

questions with four (4) choices each, and they will be dictated by
the quizmaster.
2. POINTING SYSTEM: Points per question are predetermined
depending on the difficulty of the question. In this battle, the faster
the participants correctly answer, the higher the points they can
obtain.
3. CLICKERS: Each participant will be given a “clicker” instrument
where they will press the choice corresponding to their final answer.
After a question has been read, a signal will indicate that the
participants may now press their answers. Take note that answering
before this signal may cause delay in submitting answers. Note: There
would be possible changes for this battle depending on the
availability of clickers.
4. TIME LIMIT: Time limit per question will be pre-determined
depending on the question’s difficulty, and they shall be indicated
for each question.
5. SCRATCH PAPERS: The participants will be given seven (7) sheets
of scratch paper.
6. TOP SCORERS: Only the Top 20 Scorers from this round will
proceed to the Semi-Final Round—the Battle of Winterfell.

3. BATTLE OF WINTERFELL: SEMI-FINAL ROUND

The long night is coming…

Man the walls and light the trenches, as the Great War is about to
commence. This Semi-Final Round seeks the next Heroes of Winterfell
who will find victory in the most strategic way they could think of – just
as how Arya Stark stabbed the dagger to the Night King in the series’
Battle of Winterfell.
1. QUESTIONS: The battle consists of twenty-four (24) problem-solving
questions with no choices, but only twenty (20) questions will be used
for this battle.

The questions are displayed on a “table board” in a tabular format,

hidden behind the points that they carry. Each participant, starting
from the bottom to the top rank, shall select a question from any
category.

Once a question has been selected, it will be dictated by the

quizmasters, and all participants are then required to answer the
said question regardless of whoever chooses it. It must be noted,
however, that before selecting the question at the next level, the
question preceding its level must first be chosen. Through this
system, top-ranking participants have higher chances of selecting a
high-point question from a category that they are more
comfortable with. Once all 20 participants have finished selecting
a question, the battle then concludes.

Below is a sample of the table board that displays the level and the
number of points from every category:
LEVEL MSTE SEC HGE

1 300 300 300 300 300 300

2 600 600 600 600 600 600

3 1200 1200 1200 1200 1200 1200

4 2400 2400 2400 2400 2400 2400

2. POINTING SYSTEM: In this battle, the number of points allotted will

be divided by the number of participants who get the correct
answer, and this will be equally distributed to the correct
participants. That is, the lesser participants who get the correct
answer, the higher the points they can obtain. For example, if only
one participant gets the correct answer for a 300-point question,
then that participant gets full credit for the score; if two participants
get the correct answer, then the allotted 300 points will be divided
into two – that is, the two correct participants will acquire 150 points
each.
3. TIME LIMIT: Time limit per question will be pre-determined
depending on the question’s difficulty, and they shall be indicated
for each question.
4. ANSWER BOARDS: The participants will be given answer boards
where they will write their final answers.

5. TOP SCORERS: The Top Eight (8) Scorers of this battle will
proceed to the Finals Round—the Battle of King’s Landing – and
shall fight their way toward the Iron Throne.

6. TIE BREAKER: Should there be ties for the last qualifying slots,
additional clincher round questions shall be given until all ties are
broken.

4. BATTLE OF KING’S LANDING: FINALS ROUND

Who will wear the crown and sit as the next ruler of the Iron Throne?

Finally, the remaining most powerful participants sail for King’s Landing
in an attempt to become the One True King/Queen of the Seven
Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. Engaging in a great battle of
civil engineering skillsets to the best of their abilities, the Final Round
shall decide what news will reverberate through the history of DTM-
NCEQS.
1. INITIAL PREPARATIONS: Before the game begins, each participant,
starting from the top to the bottom rank, shall choose from the available
list of “power-ups” which they can use for the battle. Once a “power-
up” has been selected, it cannot be chosen by the succeeding
participants.
2. BATTLE TYPE: The battle shall be a “race” type round with character
tokens representing each participant placed on a 20-step race board.
Each participant may move steps forward (or backward) depending on
the number of correct answers and the power-ups.
3. QUESTIONS: The battle consists of twenty-four (24) problem-solving
questions with no choices, to be dictated by the quizmaster. The battle
concludes in two ways: (1) once all questions have been answered by
the final participants; or (2) once three participants have already
crossed the finish line.
4. POINTING SYSTEM: Each correct answer corresponds to one step
forward, although some questions may correspond to varying steps.
Once the correct answer has been announced, the order that the
correct participants will move shall start from the top to the bottom rank
of the previous round.
5. TIME LIMIT: Time limit per question will be pre-determined depending on
the question’s difficulty, and they shall be indicated for each question.
6. ANSWER BOARDS: Answer boards will still be used for this round.
7. SCRATCH PAPERS: The participants will be given seven (7) scratch
papers for this round.
8. POWER-UPS: During the race, “power-ups” held by each participant can
take effect, but it must be noted that they can only have an impact on
what happens on the race board, and they do not necessarily give
advantages to participants in answering the questions. The list of
“power-ups” will be presented before the battle commences.
9. USE OF POWER-UPS: Each participant shall hold only one “power-up,”
and this will be decided before the battle commences. “Power-ups” can
be used multiple times throughout the race, but they can only be
activated once the participant holding it gets a correct answer.
10. TOP SCORERS: The First Three (3) Participants to cross the finish line
shall be declared WINNERS of the 12th DTM-NCEQS; wherein, the first
participant shall be crowned the rightful owner of the Iron Throne—the
One True King/Queen, Protector of the Realm, of the 12th DTM-NCEQS.
But in the event that all 24 questions have been answered and final
winners are not yet determined, the final placement of the character
tokens shall be the basis for the final ranking.
11. TIE BREAKER: Should ties exist for the final slots, a clincher round
question shall be conducted.

TRIAL BY COMBAT: CLINCHER ROUND

Whenever ties exist for the last spots of each round, the participants have the
right to demand a “trial by combat” – that is, additional clincher round
questions are given until all ties are broken.
1. QUESTION: Questions are randomly selected from a list covering
different topics. All participants in the Trial by Combat battle must answer
all questions given until the number of participants who get the correct
answer meets the number of remaining spots.
2. TIME LIMIT: Time limit per question will be pre-determined, and they
shall be indicated for each question.
3. ANSWER BOARDS: Answer boards will be used for this round, and scratch
papers will be provided as per request.
4. QUALIFIER: The first participant/s who get/s the correct answer win/s the
Trial by Combat battle and shall claim the remaining spot/s. In selecting
the qualifying participants for the clincher round, the following are taken
into account:

question. In doing so, the participant can simply raise his/her hand
to catch the quizmasters’ attention. If answer boards are used for
the current round, all participants are requested not to erase their
final answers until verification has been done and all protests have
been resolved.
2. The PICE-MUSC Academic Development Committee shall be
responsible for resolving concerns or complaints raised by the
participants, as well as taking appropriate actions (i.e., correction
of answers, voiding of questions) resulting from these complaints.
