THEORY OF DESIGN 1
1.0 Introduction
In this task, the task to report our work development of conceptualization process. I need to
use specific design of CURRENT studio project (e.g: Sketches, analysis, argument board,
planning, details, photos, schematic drawings, case studies, references etc.) to illustrate our
report. i need to demonstrate clearly what and how specific issues are observed and linked to
our general understanding about design.
2.0 Architectural Understanding
2.1 concepts
For the learning of theory of architecture I understand the fundamental of architecture is
growth from the ground that not have I absolute formula to find the concept. To me the design
derived by the 3 consequence element, environment, context and behavior.it will remind me
that the environment are not just inert product to be delivered. Rather, they are setting for
process in continual evolution, motion and change. The network or behavioral interaction that
hold important long term consequence for natural system and biodiversity of cultural
2.2 Conceptualization in design
Design concept is very important to being as a guideline, so the main attention to the user will
not stray. It represents the beginning of steps of the product. And sometimes, if we make it
perfect and detail we can get much important information such as:
These steps help to gain knowledge on the design and make the best possible design. However,
design concept does not actually contain the physical product yet. It just the blueprints of the
THEORY OF DESIGN 2
product or in other word are “starting point”. The effective system is produced within the
constraints of cost, timescales, performance, and result.
2.3 Precedents Studies are used to understand the design
Precedent study is something done or said that may serve as an example or rule to authorize or
justify a subsequent act of the same analogous kind, by equating our design to something else.
It also can create meaning in our design, for us, the public, or the client. It helps the building
communicate to its users and visitors, and the future. In a simple phrase, it serves as a model.
But we are also need to choose the right precedent study or at least a good one. So, for
consideration of their selection is she find something which having outstanding values to make
their idea become strong. But firstly, he tries to determine and understand the problem at hand
before select the right precedents.
3.0 Design Work
3.1 Site
The site is setup in the district of Pontian and specifically in small old known as pontian that has
a lot of historical value that bring back the identity of pontian kecil. The idea of the
development of the Pontian district is focuses on the function and potential of history to bring
the identity of the pontian and having them as a one of the strength in making the district a
better place. This concept focuses on the components which is mostly its economic activities
(agriculture, fisheries, tourism and industrial) that then become Pontian’s identity, parallel to
making it as the development strategies.
THEORY OF DESIGN 3
3.1.1 History
THE District which is now known as PONTIAN, was called KUKUP or KUKUB with its
administrative center located somewhere near the present harbor/jetty in Kukup Laut.
IN those ancient time, the West Coast of Johor, from Kukup to Benut was the stop and rest
place of the sea pirates based in the Straits of Kukup. They stationed and based at the river
mouths of the Perhentian Besar River, and the Perhentian Kechil River. (In Malay "Perhentian"
means Stopping Place (Mooring Place), "Besar" means big, "Kechil" means small, and "Sungai"
means river.)These two rivers were then called the Pontian Besar River (Sungai Pontian Besar)
and Pontian Kechil River (Sungai Pontian Kechil). Thus it was obvious that the name PONTIAN,
came from the Malay word Perhentian meaning the Stopping Place (mooring place).
QUOTED from the "Hikayat Abdullah Munsyi" written by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir (The Legend
of Abdullah Munsyi), The Straits of Kukup was then a shelter for the sea pirates and those
Travelled by the sea. When the Straits of Malacca outside was rough by strong waves and
winds, the Straits of Kukup would still be very calm and safe. Hence those who travelled by sea
and met the strong wind and waves, and wanted to seek shelter would come inside here to
meet their fate of being robbed and caught by the sea pirates. BECAUSE of such sequence,
people called this place Telukup (Malay word meaning overturn), since their boats would be
overturned by the pirates if met. Another legend said that the Malacca people, trying to flee to
the then British Colony of Singapore because could not tolerate the Dutch's ruling from 1819 to
1824, using the sea route via Kukup. Because they were afraid of such place, they called here
Telukup. Later the name was changed to Kukub and then Kukup, the present name.IT was said
that the sea pirates were then demolished by Daing Ibrahim a native Bugis who was the Johor
Temenggong in the 19th Century. Because of the majority of the residents here were Malacca
people, and that fish caught here were sent to Singapore markets, hence at demands of the
people, a surau (a small Muslim worship place) was built under the suggestion and supervision
of Tuan Shaikh Arif bin Abd. Kadir. Because of the surau, it was suggested by the iman (Muslim
Religion Leader) and Guru Agama (Religion Teachers) that this place to be called Kukub,
because kukub in Arabic Language means "stars" and related to the Islam religion.
THEORY OF DESIGN 4
3.1.2 site study and implimentation
The site study of my case is more concern the human basic sense of human behavior follow by
theory of Jehn gale. The element that I implement in my design is view, smelling, touching and
hearing to ensure that people will feel the friendly user of my design
THEORY OF DESIGN 5
3.2 precedent study
The Center of Culture and Tourism Information was built near the outer gate of the ancient
Buddhist temple Senso‐ji, built in the sixth century in the lively Asakusa. Unlike many other
districts of the metropolis of Tokyo, Asakusa still retains traces of its history, with buildings
dating from before the Second War Mundial.Durante over a century, from the 1840s to the
1940s, Asakusa district incubated unique local culture, Edo / Tokyo within coalescence
unrestricted commercial interests and entertainment. Perhaps in ACTIC, Asakusa Culture
Tourist Information Centre is the flagship regeneration get back to this district, so the Nobel
prize for literature Yasunari Kawabata described as "fertile mix of past and present, a mix of
high culture and popular "

THEORY OF DESIGN 7
3.2.1comparism case study between the design
The comparism between my design and the precedent I’m follow how the approach kengo
kuma design is about juxtapose and superimposing the design between old and new.so that it
create an iconic design because it is between of transition old and new architecture.
3.3 ideation
Basically the cultural of pontian is agriculture, aquaculture and tourism.so the main focus of the
pontian kecil is pineapple, fishery and island. Therefore the intention to bring the environment
of pontian to the visitor centre.it also indirectly bring the identity of pontian district
Pontian authority also has the future development to create pedestrian city. Therefore follow
Their future planning to create a pedestrian city.it will help to encourage the activity of the site.
The existing site already fill with wonderful activity like aerobic exercise on Sunday, pasar
madam on Monday and Friday
THEORY OF DESIGN 8
Malay environment culture
3.3.1 Design process
The introduction state about the basic information of the building based on the project brief.
Then he shows the matrix diagram which actually shows the connection of one space to
another. The data recorded during site visit and all the study showed in a proper diagram. He
try to show what the existing situation is and finally how he respond to it. After compile all the
data, he come up with design concept. Analyses the data and show using SWOT Analysis. Last
part is he provides two optional bubble diagrams that show all the spaces for site planning. The
section shown how the space respond to the surrounding environment after doing site
synthesis.
THEORY OF DESIGN 9

THEORY OF DESIGN 10
3.4 concept
The concept of approach is to create a contrasting character but same essence to the site of
pontian. The contrast of the building will create a landmark to place and give point of node to
the people to gather with local and visitor.it also give some experience to visitor to remember
the memory of the site. Furthermore it also give the identity of pontian tourism attraction.
Axis is the most basic and most common organizing principle. Simply stated, axis is an imaginary
line that is used to organize a group of elements in my design. The design elements are
arranged around an axis, the design feels ordered. As with most things in life, the building
create enjoy things that are ordered because they feel more stable, comfortable and
approachable.
Design seems to be the result of superimposing a series of traditional houses. Wood is the
material defining the facades, referring to the traditional Malay construction but done in a
contemporary way. Inside the Center reinterprets the Malay aesthetic sensibility, but the whole
stack, emptied and refilled with historical forms itself speaks of a sensitivity
THEORY OF DESIGN 11
The space articulation of the visitor centre that
follow by site context to make the design
blend well together with 3 element that I
concentrate enviroment,context and behavior
THEORY OF DESIGN 12
3.5 design approach
3.5.1 Scientific approach
The scientific approach that I apply in my design how I overcome the issue of the site than
derived the space planning and form of the my visitor center that only suit in the site give.so
that it on significant at the site and indirectly shown the identity of pontian
3.5.2 Philosophical approach
This theory I implement in the space planning especially the gallery space that a space with
feeling of genius loci. the gallery I split by three different space of gallery that give different
feeling but shown the identity of pontian based on the logo of district of pontian that basically
famous with agriculture (pine apple), aquaculture (fisherman) and tourism (light tower).so from
this element I create a space that linear but different of high floor lever to give the user some
feeling that understanding the vernacular architecture
The first space is The Laman, the Laman is the space that shown a small of pineapple garden
and automatically will give the user introduction of unique district pontian. If the user lucky
their can see the harvest time of pineapple garden
The second space I call the Serambi because the space provide for aquaculture but focus in
fisherman. The gallery shown the activity of local fishermen activity.is like the Malay house
people use to make activity at the serambi.so it’s directly will create a connection between the
visitor and user
The last space is the ibu. I call this because in Malay house it most important space in this
visitor Centre because it has the walkway to the watch tower. when the visitor it will see how
the pontian kechil development because the site is setup in the middle of old town and new.so
that people will understand the architecture and panoramic view of pontian town.it also will be
projection in future how the development of pontian kechil between new and old town of
pontian
THEORY OF DESIGN 13
The ibu
The laman
The serambi
The laman (pineapple garden)
THEORY OF DESIGN 14
3.5.3 Historical approach
The most strength in my design is historical approach because the concept is about to reveal
the origin of pontian.so that we know pontian kechil is originally is fisherman village so the
element of vernacular architecture is implement in my design but in juxtaposition because to
parallel the nowadays time so that it will more contemporary and timeless.so the language of
architect is combination of modern and vernacular design so that people will feel the essence
of the but at the same will feel the modern look of architecture. The vernacular Malay house is
idea to bring back the identity or origin of the site place as a fisherman village. From this
element i elaborate the element of Malay house to create the essence of the Malay village to
show the visitor the new experience of the place automatically create a tectonic of place
Tindih kasih
The facade treatment is use Malay wall known as tindih kasih to create essence of Malay house
but in contemporary way. The combination of old and new will create new look the design.
The element of tindih kasih facade also improvise to create a louvers and rain screen to the
building facade as element in the building. Therefore the visitor will understand the
architecture vernacular of Malay
THEORY OF DESIGN 15
THEORY OF DESIGN 16

4.0 design critique work
After assement was critique about the Malay concept how I define the principle of Malay
architecture. The concept should more straight forward and literature to give other people
more understanding about Malay culture. The user basically more understanding the
architecture by their interface or façade and my design oddly look like modern design. The
element of Malay architecture must show literally. For example like roof their suggest to use
traditional roof like “tebang layar” roof.
Second think is about structure especially the slanted tower. Because it slanted structure so it
have complicated foundation to design.so I must understanding the law of construction to
design this kind of structure.
Overall, it quite brave design because of exploration in malay principle and structure.so in
future it will be iconic as a visitor Centre. The space planning space is good approach because
the space is like a journey and linear make the user ease to understand.
THEORY OF DESIGN 17
4.1 Improvise
From the assement I have improvise certain thing and define principle of Malay architecture by
orientation, form, landscape and high of building.so that it will clear about the Malay
architecture.to me architecture is no about forming and it also about essence of the place so
the element that I implement on more my design more on feeling and the space but the form
of the building created by the site study and synthesis. I more concentrate hoe to create a
space that give experienced to the user and the approach called phenomenology or genius loci.
The structure I was studied about alamino bridge design by Santiago calatrava. how the
calatrava design the slanted bridge so from the construction alamino I mimicry follow the
construction to ensure that the design will have high workability to buildable
THEORY OF DESIGN 18
5.0 Conclusion
It is important to know what is actually we want to do. For example are, when we needed to
find design concept for our building, we need to understand first what is design concept. What
is that? How to get it? Second step to understand about architecture is by look for Precedent
Study. It is because architecture is all about the process and the product of planning, designing,
and constructing buildings and other physical structures. Overall, to show how and come up
with design concept and planning through critical thinking process. This assignment actually
takes us to understand architectural theory through thinking, discussing, and writing about
architecture.
