The layout of a reinforced concrete building is shown in Section 1.9 (page 20- 26) of the textbook
(also the RC design lecture1.1)
The loads are as described in the text, page 21: All building floors are subjected to a design live
load of 3 kPa uniformly distributed over the floor area. The region towards the rear of the building
is subjected to a live load of 8 kPa (region between E & F and 2 & 5). Dead load additional to the
self weight is 1 kPa. For the purposes of this assignment, ignore the wind loads.
The slab thickness = 200 mm; Depth of band beams = 400 mm (including the slab thickness);
Width of band beams = 1200 mm; Column size = 350 mm × 350 mm. The spandrel beam depth =
380 mm (including the slab thickness), width = 350 mm. Core wall thickness = 150 mm (located
between 3 & 4 and E & D). Density of reinforced concrete = 2400 kg/m3
Q[1] Design bending moment and Shear Force for band beams located along the line 3
between A & B
Q[2] Design bending moment and Shear Force for band beams located along the line 3
between B & C
Q[3] Design bending moment and Shear Force for spandrel beams located along the line 1
between A & B
Q[4] Design bending moment and Shear Force for spandrel beams located along the line 1
between B & C
Q[5] Axial force on Ground level Columns located at the intersection of B & 3
We will explain how to work out Q[1] and [2] during the practice class in small groups; while you
will need to complete and submit Q[3-5] of the above calculations by the end of practice class.
For the above calculations, you will need to refer to the following:
• Textbook: Reinforced Concrete Basics by Warner, Foster and Kilpatrick, pages 20-26.
• Australian standard: AS3600 – 2009 Concrete Structures, Section 6.10, or AS3600 – 2001
