In the STAAD-Pro analysis center line modelling is carried out for the lining. Tunnels having invert are
formed by combination of two or more curves and the reference points of these curves for inclined spring
support have been provided in STAAD-Pro accordingly.
CALCULATIONS
As per EM 1110-2-2901: Engineer Manual (U.S. Army Corps)-Tunnels and Shafts in Rock.
E r b krG 0.5k r
kr kt
(1 r ) Er (1 r )
kr = radial spring stiffness
kt = tangential spring stiffness
Er = Deformation modulus
b = length of element considered for stiffness calculation
Ɵ = arc subtended by the element at center (radian)
νr = Poisson's ratio
Radius of the center line of equivalent circle(As per shape of Tunnel) = 5.4 m
Length of lining considered for stiffness calculation in long. direction b = 1 m
(As the plate elements are of 1 m length, one support will carry the load of 1 m width)
As the length of each element for invert is approximately equal to that of crown & sidewalls, same
spring stiffness has been assumed to have been applied for all arcs.

Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m
As per B-4.1 (b),IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, the resultant tension in concrete is not greater than 25% of resultant
compression or does not exceed three-fourths of the 7 day modulus of rupture of concrete.
7 day Modulus of rupture considered = 3.07 MPa
3/4 th of 7 day modulus of rupture = 2.30 MPa
So, if the resultant tension is less than or equal to 2.30 MPa then concrete lining
is safe in tension.
The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial tension will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time. However as seen
from the analysis results, no axial tensile force is developed.

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)
Refer clause B-4.1,IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial compressive load and
bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:
cc ,cal cbc ,cal
1 ......................(A)
where,
cc cbc
σcc,cal = calculated direct compressive stress in concrete
σcc = permissible axial compressive stress in concrete
σcbc,cal = calculated bending compressive stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending compressive stress in concrete
Refer clause 6.3 (b), IS 3370(Part 2):2009- Concrete structures for storage of liquids-code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial
tension load and bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:
.......................(B)
where
σct,cal = calculated direct tensile stress in concrete
σct = permissible direct compressive stress in concrete
σcbt,cal = calculated bending tensile stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending tensile stress in concrete
M M
Pc Pc
The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial load will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time.
Axial compressive force with compression due to bending
A cc bD cbc 6
Pc M X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
1 X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
x y Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m
The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial tension will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time. However as seen
from the analysis results, no axial tensile force is developed.

Axial force (kN)
For compressive axial forces, Pints corresponding to the maximum axial load and bending moment are lying inside the "Support capacity plot" but the
resultant tensile stress is outside tensile limits, reinforcement shall have to be provided to distribute tensile stresses and increase capacity . No tensile
axial forces are observed.
