SPRING STIFFNESS CALCULATION:

The concrete lining of the tunnels is approximated to a circular lining for the purpose of calculation of
spring stiffness.

In the STAAD-Pro analysis center line modelling is carried out for the lining. Tunnels having invert are
formed by combination of two or more curves and the reference points of these curves for inclined spring
support have been provided in STAAD-Pro accordingly.

CALCULATIONS

As per EM 1110-2-2901: Engineer Manual (U.S. Army Corps)-Tunnels and Shafts in Rock.
E r b krG 0.5k r

Er = Deformation modulus
b = length of element considered for stiffness calculation
Ɵ = arc subtended by the element at center (radian)
νr = Poisson's ratio
Radius of the center line of equivalent circle(As per shape of Tunnel) = 5.4 m
Length of lining considered for stiffness calculation in long. direction b = 1 m
(As the plate elements are of 1 m length, one support will carry the load of 1 m width)

Angle subtended at center by the single element ΘA = 5.00 °

As the length of each element for invert is approximately equal to that of crown & sidewalls, same
spring stiffness has been assumed to have been applied for all arcs.

Design Input:
Lining thickness considered (excluding invert portion) D= 300 mm
Lining thickness considered (invert portion) D= 400 mm

The design of concrete lining is carried out by considering it as an independent structural member. The lining is designed based on working stress method.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR PCC LINING

Member subjected to combined axial load and bending

Refer clause B-4.1,IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial compressive load and
bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:

 cc ,cal  cbc ,cal ......................(A)

 1
 cc  cbc
where,
σcc,cal = calculated direct compressive stress in concrete
σcc = permissible axial compressive stress in concrete
σcbc, cal = calculated bending compressive stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending compressive stress in concrete

Refer clause 6.3 (b), IS 3370(Part 2):2009- Concrete structures for storage of liquids-code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial
tension load and bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:

.......................(B)

where
σct,cal = calculated direct tensile stress in concrete
σct = permissible direct compressive stress in concrete
σcbt, cal = calculated bending tensile stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending tensile stress in concrete

Permissible bending stress in compression σcbc = 10.00 MPa

Permissible direct stress in compression σcc = 8.00 MPa
Permissible bending stress in tension σcbt (As per IS :3370-2:2009 Table 1) = 2.00 MPa
Permissible direct stress in tension σct(As per IS :3370-2:2009 Table 1 ) = 1.50 MPa

Compressive load and bending

M M
Pc Pc

The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial load will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time.
Axial compressive force with compression due to bending

 cc ,cal  cbc ,cal

 1
 cc  cbc x  A cc

Considering above eqn,

Pc 6M bD 2

y  cbc
 2 1 6
A cc bD  cbc
X at normal condition (for 300 mm thickness) = 2400.0 kN
Pc M X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
 1 Y at normal condition (for 300 mm thickness) = 150.00 kN-m
x y Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m

Axial compressive force with tension due to bending:

As per B-4.1 (b),IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, the resultant tension in concrete is not greater than 25% of resultant
compression or does not exceed three-fourths of the 7 day modulus of rupture of concrete.
7 day Modulus of rupture considered = 3.07 MPa
3/4 th of 7 day modulus of rupture = 2.30 MPa
So, if the resultant tension is less than or equal to 2.30 MPa then concrete lining
is safe in tension.

Bending with Axial tension

Axial tensile force with tension due to bending
Considering Eq.2,

X at normal condition (for 300 mm thck) = 450.0 kN

X at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) 600.0 kN
Y at normal condition (for 300 mm thick) = 30.00 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) 53.33 kN-m

The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial tension will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time. However as seen
from the analysis results, no axial tensile force is developed.

For compressive axial forces, Since all the points corresponding to the maximum axial load and bending moment are lying within the "Support capacity
plot" and resultant tensile stress is within tensile limits the section considered for the design is SAFE . No tensile axial forces are observed.

3. DESIGN -SHEAR CHECK

Percentage of tensile reinforcement provided = 0
Permissible shear stress = 0.20 MPa
Multiplying factor for shear stress for members subjected to axial compression
( Refer Clause B-5.2.2 , IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- Code of Practice.)

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)

P = axial compressive force

Ag = gross are of the concrete section
δ = 1.23
Hence, permissible shear stress taking the effect of axial compression = 0.25 MPa
Design shear stress = 0.09 MPa OK
For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.

The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial load will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time.

( Refer Clause B-5.2.2 , IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- Code of Practice.)

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)

P = axial compressive force

Ag = gross are of the concrete section
δ = 1.28
Hence, permissible shear stress taking the effect of axial compression = 0.26 MPa
Design shear stress = 0.07 MPa OK
For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.

For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR PCC LINING

Member subjected to combined axial load and bending

Refer clause B-4.1,IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial compressive load and
bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:

where,
σcc,cal = calculated direct compressive stress in concrete
σcc = permissible axial compressive stress in concrete

M M

The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial load will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time.

X at normal condition (for 350 mm thck) = 525.0 kN

X at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) 600.0 kN
Y at normal condition (for 350 mm thick) = 40.83 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) 53.33 kN-m

The moment 'M' in a member during bending with axial tension will cause compression in one face while tension in opposite face at the same time. Hence,
the moment capacity of the section has to be checked for both permissible bending stress in compression and tension at the same time. However as seen
from the analysis results, no axial tensile force is developed.

For compressive load, Since all the points corresponding to the maximum axial load and bending moment are lying within the "Support capacity plot" and
resultant tensile stress is within tensile limits the section considered for the design is SAFE . No tensile axial forces are observed in the lining

3. DESIGN -SHEAR CHECK

Percentage of tensile reinforcement provided = 0
Permissible shear stress = 0.20 MPa
Multiplying factor for shear stress for members subjected to axial compression
( Refer Clause B-5.2.2 , IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- Code of Practice.)

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)

P = axial compressive force

Ag = gross are of the concrete section
δ = 1.40
Hence, permissible shear stress taking the effect of axial compression = 0.28 MPa
Design shear stress = 0.11 MPa OK
For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.
ANNEXURE-IX
CONCRETE LINING DESIGN FOR ROCK CLASS-C2
Material Data:
Grade of concrete = M-30
Characteristic strength of concrete fck = 30 MPa
Design Input:
Lining thickness considered (excluding invert portion) D= 350 mm
Lining thickness considered (invert portion) D= 400 mm
Length of the tunnel considered b= 1000 mm
The design of concrete lining is carried out by considering it as an independent structural member. The lining is designed based on working stress method.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR PCC LINING

Member subjected to combined axial load and bending

Refer clause B-4.1,IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial compressive load and
bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:
 cc ,cal  cbc,cal
 1 ......................(A)

where,  cc  cbc
σcc,cal = calculated direct compressive stress in concrete
σcc = permissible axial compressive stress in concrete
σcbc, cal = calculated bending compressive stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending compressive stress in concrete

Refer clause 6.3 (b), IS 3370(Part 2):2009- Concrete structures for storage of liquids-code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial
tension load and bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:

.......................(B)

where
σct,cal = calculated direct tensile stress in concrete
σct = permissible direct compressive stress in concrete
σcbt, cal = calculated bending tensile stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending tensile stress in concrete

Permissible bending stress in compression σcbc = 10.00 MPa

Permissible direct stress in compression σcc = 8.00 MPa
Permissible bending stress in tension (As per IS :3370-2:2009 Table 1 ) σcbt = 2.00 MPa

 1
 cc  cbc
x  A cc
Considering above eqn, Pc 6M
 1 bD 2

A cc bD 2 cbc y  cbc

6
Pc M X at normal condition (for 350 mm thickness) = 2800.0 kN
 1 X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
x y
Y at normal condition (for 350 mm thickness) = 204.17 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m

X at normal condition (for 350 mm thck) = 525.0 kN

X at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) = 600.0 kN
Y at normal condition (for 350 mm thick) = 40.83 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) = 53.33 kN-m

( Refer Clause B-5.2.2 , IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- Code of Practice.)

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)

P = axial compressive force

Ag = gross are of the concrete section
δ = 1.45
Hence, permissible shear stress taking the effect of axial compression = 0.29 MPa
Design shear stress = 0.16 MPa OK
For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.
ANNEXURE-X
CONCRETE LINING DESIGN FOR ROCK CLASS-L
Material Data:
Grade of concrete = M-30
Characteristic strength of concrete fck = 30 MPa
Design Input:
Lining thickness considered (excluding invert portion) D= 400 mm
Lining thickness considered (invert portion) D= 400 mm
Length of the tunnel considered b= 1000 mm
The design of concrete lining is carried out by considering it as an independent structural member. The lining is designed based on working stress method.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR PCC LINING

Member subjected to combined axial load and bending

Refer clause B-4.1,IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- code of practice, for uncracked section a member subjected to axial compressive load and
bending shall be considered safe provided the following conditions are satisfied:
 cc ,cal  cbc ,cal
 1 ......................(A)

where,
 cc  cbc
σcc,cal = calculated direct compressive stress in concrete
σcc = permissible axial compressive stress in concrete
σcbc, cal = calculated bending compressive stress in concrete considering biaxial bending
σcbc = permissible bending compressive stress in concrete

 1
 cc  cbc
x  A cc

Considering above eqn, Pc 6M bD 2

 2 1 y  cbc

A cc bD  cbc 6
Pc M X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
 1 X at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 3200.0 kN
x y Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thickness) = 266.67 kN-m

X at normal condition (for 400 mm thck) = 600.0 kN

X at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) = 600.0 kN
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) = 53.33 kN-m
Y at normal condition (for 400 mm thick) = 53.33 kN-m

( Refer Clause B-5.2.2 , IS 456:2000- Plain and Reinforced Concrete- Code of Practice.)

δ=1+5𝑃/(𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐𝑘)

P = axial compressive force

Ag = gross are of the concrete section
δ = 1.39
Hence, permissible shear stress taking the effect of axial compression = 0.28 MPa
Design shear stress = 0.22 MPa OK
For the calculation of increased shear stress the axial force of the element having maximum shear stress is considered.
Hence, the section is safe in shear.
