Indian Standard
© BIS 2017
Foreword
This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized
by the Gas Cylinders Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Divisional Council.
This standard was published in 1978 in two parts. Part 1 covered valve fittings which may be used with old LPG
cylinders for replacement purposes. Part 2 covered valve fittings for newly manufactured LPG cylinders. Oil
industry is using only self-locking and self-closing valves for LPG cylinders. Earlier ‘F’ type valves were used
and were to be replaced by self-closing valves. When the replacement was completed, Part 1 of this standard was
not used any more. Hence, Part 1 of this standard was withdrawn and Part 2 was re-designated as IS 8737.
Subsequently revised in 1995. In this revision all the amendments have been incorporated and the following
major changes have been made:
a) Terminology incorporated;
b) Some additional tests for nonmetallic materials included;
c) Inlet threads, type-2 threads (size 28.8 mm, taper 3 in 25 on diameter) included;
d) Requirement of valve outlet connection revised; and
e) Following type test included:
1) Operation test,
2) Valve fitting testing torque, and
3) Impact test.
The purpose of this standard is to provide a specification for the design, manufacture, inspection and testing of
valve fittings for use with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) of more than 5 litre water capacity
In the preparation of this standard assistance has been derived from ISO 14245 : 2006 ‘Gas cylinders—
Specifications and testing of LPG cylinder valves self-closing’.
While implementing this standard, the manufacturer and the inspection agency shall ensure compliance with
statutory regulations. It is the responsibility of the owners and the users to ensure that the cylinders are periodically
tested as per norms laid down in Gas Cylinder Rules, 2004 as amended from time-to-time and as enforced by
statutory authorities under the rules.
The relevant SI units and corresponding conversion factors are given below for guidance:
1 kgf/cm2 = 98.066 5 kPa (kilopascal) = 10 m of Water column (WC)
= 0.098 066 5 MPa (megapascal)
= 0.980 665 bar
1 Pa = 1 N/m2
The composition of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex B.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value
observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960
‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off
value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
