Learning Exercise # 4
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND NATION BUILDING
Name: Henerson Polis Capalis Date:
Course & Year: BEED 1 B

PART I. Answer the following situations below and elaborate your answers.
1. What do you think are the major contributions of science and technology to Philippine Nation
building?
_____The Philippine archipelago's dispersed islands were brought together to form a modern state
via the efforts of numerous internal and external contributors. Communications and transportation
may have made the biggest political unification contributions from science and technology.
Without considerable contributions from both disciplines, it is difficult to see how more than 7,500
islands could be managed
jointly.__________________________________________________________________________
____
2. Identify atleast three (3) Filipino scientist. Research on their contribution in the field of science.
__1. Julián Arca Banzón was a Filipino biochemist and a National Scientist of the Philippines.
Banzon is credited for his research in alternative fuel.
__2. Dr. Fe Del Mundo (Pediatrician) – credited with studies that lead to the invention of an
improved incubator and a device to treat jaundice. Fe del Mundo’s invention has saved countless
premature infants around the world. She is known as the Inventor of Bamboo Incubator. Dedicated
her life to the cause of pediatrics in the Philippines___
__3. Edgardo Dizon Gomez, ONS was a Filipino biologist who has conferred the rank of National
Scientist of the Philippines in 2014. He was a professor emeritus for marine biology at the
University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute. Gomez saw the need to protect the Philippine
archipelago’s vast marine resources in particular that of coral reefs. He led the world’s first national-
scale assessment of damage to coral reefs leading to international conservation initiatives such as
the replanting of corals He also pioneered giant clam breeding stationed in Bolinao and other
protected areas for coastal communities in the
Philippines..___________________________________________________________________
3. What do you think are the major contributions of the Philippines to the field at present?
___In the fields of science and technology, Filipinos have made significant contributions. In truth,
scientists from the Philippines have created several things. The following are just a few of the
Filipinos' inventions__Lamps using sea water instead of kerosene. This was invented by a Filipina
scientist. Cooking stove using methane gas from farm animals waste. This was invented by a
Filipino scientist. Running a car machine using water instead of gasoline. This was conceptualized
by a Filipino scientist. And lately, a group of Filipino students invented robotic toy cars. There was
also another group Filipinos who was also able to invent dengue testing kits.
The aforementioned are just some of the inventions by Filipino scientists. Their inventions may not
be that big, but their inventions can contribute to the science and technology not just in the
Philippines, but also to the world.

4. List down indigenous science practices in your locality. Determine how it was done and its
importance in your community.
_Rotational farming, shifting cultivation, pastoralism, fishing, agroforestry, and hunting and
gathering are some of those that they have acknowledged as viable and sustainable (International
Indigenous Peoples' Summit on Sustainable
Development).___________________________________________________________________

PART II. Write a critique on the government’s strategy in addressing the following issues:
1. COVID-19 vaccination;
2. Improving the internet connection of the country; and
3. Territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea with China.
Choose any one (1) of the above issues and use 350 words in your critique.

___Regarding immunizations, there have been misunderstandings and misinformation. However,

immunizations are a crucial component of both family and public health. Vaccinations stop the
spread of infectious, harmful, and fatal diseases. These include diphtheria, HPV, COVID-19,
chicken pox, whooping cough, mumps, polio, and measles.

The smallpox vaccination was the first one to be developed. Smallpox was a fatal condition. In the
past century, it claimed the lives of 300 million to 500 million people worldwide. The disease was
eventually eradicated after the vaccination was administered to humans. It is the only illness that
has been entirely eradicated. Polio is one of the current diseases that are approaching that stage.
Before becoming ill, you can boost your body's inherent resistance to a disease using a vaccine (or
immunization). This prevents you from contracting the illness and spreading it. A disease germ that
has been weakened is injected into your body as part of various immunizations. Typically, a shot to
the arm or leg is used for this.

Your body creates antibodies to combat the invaders after identifying their antigens. These
antibodies then endure for a very long time in your body. They frequently remain throughout your
entire life. Your body will fight off the infection if you are ever exposed to it again, preventing you
from ever contracting the sickness.

Some diseases, such as some types of cold viruses, are rather minor. But some, like COVID-19,
smallpox, or polio, can have a profound impact on a person's life. Even death may ensue from
them. It is crucial to protect your body from developing certain diseases because of this. Your body
develops a defense system to combat invading microorganisms that could harm or make you ill. It
goes under the name of immune system.

Your body needs to come into contact with many microorganisms in order to develop its immune
system. Your body creates antibodies to combat a germ when it is first exposed to it. However, that
takes time, and typically, you become ill before the antibodies have developed. Antibodies,
however, remain in your body once you have them. Therefore, the antibodies will target that germ
the next time you are exposed to it, preventing you from becoming unwell.
