1.What other government projects and programs are available for science
education in the Philippines?
- DOST Science for Chang Program includes 4 programs namely: Niche Centers in
Regions for R&D (NICER) Program, R&D Leadership, and Collaborative R&D to
Leverage PH Economy (CRADLE), and lastly Business Innovation through S&T (BIST)
for Industry Program.

2.Are there private schools with outstanding science education programs?

Identify and compare their science education programs with public science
schools.
-There is a private school that is science and math-oriented in the Philippines namely:
Laguna BelAir Science School, St. Lino Science High School, Brainshire Science
School, Diliman Preparatory School, Westfield Science Oriented School, and many
more.

3.What is your understanding of indigenous science?

-As for my understanding, indigenous science helps promote forest or wild
sustainability. Most of its tradition promotes sustainable forest management as
expressed in their respect to customary laws about land rights, the adaption of upland
cultivation practices following solid and water conservation principles.

4.What are examples of indigenous science practices?

-These are knowledge developed over centuries of experimentation and passed orally
from generation to generation. Here in the Philippines, Indigenous Practices are: use of
herbal, botanical, and insect as medicine, knowing and preparing native wine or
beverages, and also naming characterization of birds and other animals.

5.Why do some people believe in indigenous science?

-People like me do believe in indigenous science because of its natural practices that
can be seen as the fruitfulness of their hard work from thousands of years. For instance,
the Banaue Rice Terraces that were carved by ancestors of indigenous people, that we
can still visit and see. Indigenous people generally believed they are responsible for the
well-being of the natural environment around them.

6.Do you think indigenous science should be considered science?

-Of course. We all know that science came from scratch. We must be successful in
making use of technology to make our lives easier, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have
bad effects specifically in nature. Hence, these indigenous people have respect for
nature and most of their practices are in exchange benefits with both nature and
animals.

7.What is the role of indigenous science in the development of science and

technology?
-Indigenous people have been responsible for the sustainability of science and the
development of many technologies throughout history. Indigenous science incorporates
traditional knowledge and Indigenous perspective. They lived depended on their
knowledge about the environment and many plant species including crop cultivation are
enjoyed across the globe. Indigenous knowledge about the medicinal properties of
plants has been greatly helped in pharmacological development.

8.How do you describe your school?

-Before transferring to ICCT, I was once a student of the Trinity University of Asia, I
describe my school as my second home because it is the place where teach me how to
socialize with other people and make them part of my daily life.

9.Is there any project/s of your school that involves society and technology? Give
us an explanation.
-During my high school days, we have a research paper that involves thinking of some
ways to a specific object that will benefit the environment and humans. For instance, the
Biofuel and Soap from Janitor fish (which is rampant in number in Marikina River) have
been studied and defended by our school mate internationally.

10.What Science school do you want to go to and why?

-When I was a kid, I dreamed of going to Philippine Science High School which is 2009,
said to be the best science high school. The school won a different international and
local competition. Facilities are complete and the government acknowledges the talents
and intellectual gift of the students there.

DO THE ACTIVITIES BELOW

1.Narrate the science-related issues and problems in the country.

● Lack of support from key institutions and government
-In the interviews, most scientists and engineers are demanded to publish journal
articles and new research but the government can’t even give resources to support
them. Thus, many Filipino tend to leave the country in search of a better life where they
can practice science that they have invested in their lives.
I just want to site what current senator of Philippines, a government employee, Cythia
This insensitive comment is a
government employee who is supposed to be supporting Bachelors of Science graduate
regardless of the specific course they took backslash.
● The appointees by the upper officials of government to health or science-related
agencies were ironically soldiers, economists and even worst is, businessmen.
-This has been a debate not only by Netizen but also in the common Filipino community.
There will always be a field of expertise that this position in government agencies
requires. And I am personally opposed to this kind of implementation or appointment.
For instance, Secretary Ano, a retired soldier, and the current secretary of DILG
proposed many health protocols but ironically again, people questioned the
implementation but also questioned the said secretary due to having been tested
positive for COVID-19 twice.

2.Identify science and technology policies that could be adapted or implemented

in the Philippines.
Strict banning of quarrying – we currently have a policy in the country which
permits quarrying with 5 years validity with a covered mineral agreement.
Quarrying may have the advantage of creating jobs but that’s all. Most of the
effects are downgrade that creates pollution, noise, dust, and making wildlife
habitats destroyed. The policies must not be the purpose of suspending,
asDENR says last December 2020. But it must be a total ban on quarrying within
the country.
Strict implementation of segregation of trash – it is discussed during our
elementary days and has been widely promoted by different organizations yet
only a few cities were to strictly implement such segregation. This will cause us
to exert effort in the community but also will save time for our low-income
garbage man and also will help recyclers.
Salary increase for health workers – this is a very timely issue. As we now have a
pandemic that hit thousands of Filipino people, health is indeed crucial. Policies
that will increase salary to the health workers will compensate for the time they
spend in saving the lives of our countrymen. This will also give a chance to
betterment this area as the government aids and support and tackles the issues
concerning why Filipino nurses choose to be out of the country serving other
nations even they sacrifice their wants to stay here.

3.Identify Filipino indigenous knowledge.

- The Manobo community cultivates the diversity of medicinal plants in their territory to
deal with public health crises. The Subanen community employs animal warnings and
signs in nature to understand the effects of anthropogenic activities like illegal logging
and forest denudation and to administer their disaster risk reduction and administer their
risk reduction operation. The Higanon community preserves an ancient system of
conflict resolution to enact peace-building in land disputes and other issues concerning
the individual.

4.Research on the connection of indigenous knowledge to science and

technology.
- Indigenous knowledge has been responsible for the sustainability of science and the
development of many technologies throughout history. Indigenous science incorporates
traditional knowledge and Indigenous perspective. They lived depended on their
knowledge about the environment and many plant species including crop cultivation are
enjoyed across the globe. Indigenous knowledge about the medicinal properties of
plants has been greatly helping in pharmacological development.

5.Make a poster about the indigenous knowledge connection to science and

technology.
