CHAPTER II: SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

DO THIS!!
Do the Activities below.

1. Narrate the science-related issues and problems in the country.

 Lack of support from key institutions and government - Most scientists and engineers are
pressured to write journal articles and new research during the interviews, but the government
cannot assist them. As a result, many Filipinos are fleeing the country to pursue a better life
where they can practice the science they have devoted their lives to.
 The appointees by the upper officials of government to health or science-related agencies
were ironically soldiers, economist and even worst is, businessman. - This has sparked debate
among Netizens as well as the general Filipino community. This position in government
organizations will always require a particular area of expertise. I, for one, am opposed to this
type of implementation or appointment. For example, Secretary Ano, retired military and the
current secretary of the DILG, presented several health protocols. Still, strangely, people
questioned not only the execution but also the said secretary, who had tested positive for
COVID-19 times.

2. Identify science and technology policies that could be adapted or implemented in the
Philippines.
 Strict banning of quarrying – We now have a policy in place that allows quarrying for five
years with a covered mineral agreement. Quarrying has the benefit of producing jobs, but that
is it. The majority of the effects are negative, resulting in pollution, noise, dust, and the
destruction of wildlife habitats.
 Strict implementation of segregation of trash – Although it has been discussed since our
elementary school days and is widely pushed by many organizations, few cities have strictly
implemented such segregation. It will encourage community participation and save time for
our low-income waste collectors and assist recyclers.
 Salary increase for health workers – It is a highly timely topic. Health is essential because we
are currently dealing with a pandemic that has affected thousands of Filipinos. Policies that
boost health workers' pay will repay them for the time they spend saving our fellow citizens'
lives. It will also provide an opportunity to improve this area as the government assists,
supports, and addresses why Filipino nurses opt to serve in other countries despite their desire
to stay in the country.

3. Identify Filipino indigenous knowledge.

- The Manobo community cultivates the diversity of medicinal plants in their territory to deal with
public health crises. The Subanen community employs animal warnings and signs in nature to
understand the effects of anthropogenic activities like illegal logging and forest denudation and to
administer their disaster risk reduction and administer their risk reduction operation. The Higanon
community preserves an ancient system of conflict resolution to enact peace-building in land
disputes and other issues concerning the individual.

4. Research on the connection of indigenous knowledge to science and technology.

- Throughout history, indigenous knowledge has been responsible for the long-term viability of
science and the development of many technologies. Traditional wisdom and Indigenous
perspectives and incorporated into Indigenous science. They survived because of their
environmental knowledge, and many plant species, including crop cultivation, are now enjoyed
worldwide. Pharmacological development has significantly benefited from indigenous knowledge
of plant medicinal properties.

5. Make a poster about the indigenous knowledge connection to science and technology
