Introduction

The capstone project, “Leturan: A Learning Application for Learning Tagalog

Phonics using Letter, Picture, and Sound Association Technique” is a mobile app which

will help people especially Grade 1 students and parents. Teaching Phonics can be

intimidating but this method prepares the child to read any word. The presence of mobile

technologies within preschool and elementary classrooms has been increasing, yet review

studies which measure the effectiveness of mobile technologies to support children’s

literacy achievement remains scarce based by Eutsler

Ni Putu Pebri Ariati, Ni Nyoman Padmadewi and I Wayan Suarnajaya said that

having a strong foundation in English literacy nowadays is believed to be a very crucial

requirement for the children to survive and succeed both in educational and social lives.

One of the most effective strategies for enhancing children’s early reading and literacy

skills is through Jolly Phonics. Despite the popularity and its effectiveness, there is still a

factor to the absence of the strategy, namely lack of teacher knowledge.

In the matter of Sean Si (2017), In today’s world, technology has become an

incredibly integral aspect of our lives. Every age group is now very well acquainted with

the marvels of smartphones and tablets—these would include children that are enrolled in

the best international schools in Manila. “Teaching Phonics means teaching the sound of

the letter or letter groups. Thus, the child learns to read letter by letter to form the word,

compared to sight words where the child learns the word as a whole.” based on Daddy

Jinoe (2020).

The digital revolution has profoundly affected daily living, evident in the ubiquity

of mobile devices and the seamless integration of technology into common tasks such as

shopping, reading, and finding directions as stated by Anderson (2016).

On the other hand, modern technology has already impacted a lot in our day-to-

day lives. It has brought many changes, particularly during the pandemic, and has made

significant impact to the field of education. Children are more likely to engaged in

technology, According to Esquiremag PH, UNICEF published their annual The State of

The World’s Children report for 2017, Among the statistics and figures that factored into

The State of The World’s Children 2017 was one from a separate study by GSMA from

2015, which found that in the Philippines, the most common age for a child to own a

mobile phone was 10 years old.

This study only proves that children have a lot of engagement with gadgets and

technology, this will only justify that learning Phonics and other things would be easier

taught through the use of technology. There are many reasons to support why phonics

instruction is essential. In 1950’s, in Rudolf Flesch’s best-selling book Why Johnny Can’t

Read, Flesch concluded that reading programs that include systematic, intensive phonics

instruction work better than those that do not

This method will also be important in developing an innovative approach in

teaching phonics with our national language. The program will have a variety of

entertaining features that will make learning more enjoyable for youngsters and increase

their engagement, allowing them to adapt knowledge and become motivated to learn new

things without becoming bored.

This application will serve as a guide and can be a stepping stone for Grade 1

students to learn the Tagalog alphabet and learn how to read in a fun and enjoyable

manner. This research will be conducted to see the improvement of the kids in the field of

reading and familiarizing the Tagalog alphabet because nowadays, parents are teaching

their children how to speak English before they even learn the Tagalog language.

One of the aims of this study is to use a mobile app to track the improvement of the

student over time. This study also employs a mobile app that is easy at any time. In this

study, the said mobile app will be installed to the smartphone, to effectively play the

educational app for the students and it will then be utilized in Cabetican Elementary

School.

Statement of the Problem

General Problem:

Students lose focus while learning phonics words because they don't grasp the

other terms in the Tagalog phonics word language and are distracted by external

influences such as online gaming. Students who can use phonics abilities to decode

unfamiliar words will also be better readers.

Specific Problem:

1. What are the ways to catch the interest of the students by using educational

game app when they feel unmotivated in answering it in terms of:

a.) Graphics

b.) Sounds

c.) Mini-games

2. What are the effective techniques to make the students engage and speak in

Filipino?

a.) Voice Narration

b.) Pronunciation

3. What are the possible solutions that will help the students with insufficient

technology/ no internet cope-up in this new normal of online learning?

Objectives of the Study

General Objective:

The researcher's overall goal is to create an application that will help grade one

student in learning Tagalog Phonics using letter, picture and sound association. For

seamless and continuous usage with limited interruption, the application will run offline

after completely downloading the package. This program will help youngsters learn faster

and encourage them to read and pronounce Tagalog words correctly.

Specific Objectives:

1. To create a Filipino android application with enticing UI incorporated with

enjoyable 2D mini-games to catch the attention of students.

2. To integrate the Filipino modules of the students into a fun android application to

give them motivation and confidence in using Filipino language.

3. To develop an offline application that will accommodate students with unstable or

no internet/ mobile data connection at all to help them keep up in this new normal

of learning.

Methodology

Rapid application development is a term that’s gaining a lot of attention among

the IT crowd. RAD methodology is a way to create software quickly and efficiently,

without having to resort to development models like the Waterfall model, which is

inflexible, making it difficult to change functions and features once you’ve built the

software. The concept, as radical as it may seem, isn’t something that popped up

overnight. It has been in the industry for decades. It’s gaining traction now because of the

rapid explosion in software development requirements.

Figure 1: Rapid Agile Methodology

Step 1. Define and finalize project requirements

During this step, stakeholders sit together to define and finalize project

requirements such as project goals, expectations, timelines, and budget. When you have

COLLEGE OF COMPUTING STUDIES
MAIN CAMPUS
DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE UNIVERSITY 13

clearly defined and scoped out each aspect of the project’s requirements, you can seek

management approvals.

Step 2: Begin building prototypes

After scoping the project, development follows. Designers and developers will

work closely with clients to create and improve upon working prototypes until the final

product is ready.

Step 3: Gather user feedback

In this step, prototypes and beta systems are converted into working models.

Developers then gather feedback from users to tweak and improve prototypes and create

the best possible product.

Step 4: Test, test, test

This step requires you to test the software product and ensure that all its moving

parts work together as per client expectations. Continue incorporating client feedback as

the code is tested and retested for its smooth functioning.

Step 5: Present your system

This is the final step before the finished product goes to launch. It involves data

conversion and user training.

Research Design

The researchers used an Experimental Research Design, a scientific approach to

research, where one or more independent variables are manipulated and applied to one or

more dependent variables to measure their effect on the latter. The before-and-after study

design was used by the researchers where they conducted a pre-survey to measure the

effectiveness of the proposed system once implemented.

Research Instruments

Outdoor activities were limited due to the spread of the COVID-19 Virus,

including conducting surveys using printed questionnaires. Thus, the researchers

conducted an Online-Survey Questionnaire for the respondents using a free online tool

from Google called Google Forms. This platform allows users to create forms, surveys,

and quizzes as well as to collaboratively edit and share the forms with other people. In

addition, the researcher used Facebook, one of the most common social media platforms

in the Philippines, to distribute survey questionnaire links to the target respondents.

The researchers created a set of questions to collect their participants' ideas,

responses, recommendations, and opinions regarding "Leturan: A Learning Application

for Learning Tagalog Phonics using Letter, Picture, and Sound Association Technique”.

Organization Assessment

The researchers created a set of questions through Google forms to gather their

participant's insights, comments, suggestions, and thoughts about their Research

“Leturan: A Learning Application for Learning Tagalog Phonics using Letter, Picture,

and Sound Association Technique”. The Study was conducted in the barangay Cabetican

Bacolor Pampanga, Where the school is located. Researchers distributed Google Forms

links via social media platforms such as Facebook Messenger. This is being sent to

Facebook friends. Researchers have chosen to send the link to a friend in order to ensure

the accuracy of the results. The Quota Sampling is the sampling technique the researcher

used in this study, which is a Non-Probability Sampling.

Scoring System

The researchers used a formula for the computation of the data as the weighted

mean. Weighted Mean is a statistical method that computes the average by multiplying

the weights with its individual mean and taking its total. It is a sort of average where

weights are assigned to a singular value to determine the overall significance of every

perception.

COLLEGE OF COMPUTING STUDIES

DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE UNIVERSITY 26

The researchers followed a standards formula to get weighted mean:

In the assessment of post-study survey for the user of Cabetican Elementary

School and evaluating the data storage, monitoring, ease of use and system management

of the proposed system, the following rating scales with corresponding descriptive rating:

3.51-4.20 Agree

2.51-3.50 Fair

1.51-2.50 Disagree

1.00-1.50 Strongly Disagree

The respondents of the study are a total of 100 users and teachers in Cabetican

Elementary School whose opinions on the functionality of the proposed app are shown in

the system evaluation table.

COLLEGE OF COMPUTING STUDIES
MAIN CAMPUS
DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE UNIVERSITY 27

Proceeding from here, this section of the study shows how the proposed app is

accepted and used by 100 respondents from Cabetican Elementary School through its

functionality and efficiency. The results show that most of the respondents agreed that the

proposed app is reliable and accessible when it comes to learning. The proposed app

shows the process of learning.

The survey was conducted to the 100 respondents, 10 from Teacher of Cabetican

Elementary School, questioning the teacher how long or difficult the manual teaching of

Filipinos, and what will be the benefit of the app being implemented now for those who

use the application. As for the 90 users, the researchers questioned how they enjoy and

what are the things they have experienced in application and their opinions on the

apps. The researchers were able to identify and evaluate the needs of the school of the

study after conducting an interview and completing questionnaires. In line with this, they

were able to examine how the system is working and present it in a way that users and

administrators will find useful and effective.

The respondents who tried and tested the app were able to recognize the study's

significance, portability, and effectiveness.

Conclusions

Overall, based on the results of the survey before, it has been presented that the

research exceeds the ratings of 4 out of 5 and disagreement means less than 2. This

shows that there is a demand for the research or alike. Not only the pet clinic owners

strongly agreed to research’s system manifestation but also the client of clinic owners as

it will greatly help in today’s setup, slowly bringing back what was before pandemic

gives in terms of entrepreneurial, business transactions, deliveries, leisure and

emergencies. The latest web technology features also like validation of data for security

monitoring for both safety of owner and its clients is what make the research more

appealing to those that had been surveyed.

This clearly shows that the study will benefit future researchers since it will

provide research data for studies that are related to this study. This will aid future

researchers in determining what they need to accomplish by serving as a reference for

their research. The researchers discovered that the existing pet management system

lacked protection to their clients and in appointments. They also discovered that there

was no web-based system and that they could only make appointments in the clinic by

hand.

COLLEGE OF COMPUTING STUDIES

DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE UNIVERSITY 32

Recommendations

Researchers discovered a flaw that makes it difficult to make appointments and

order products in the pet clinic. Thus, the features of the research were implemented. But

along the course of the research, due to less resources and time, the researchers presented

suggestions that could benefit the research to be improved further in terms of:

1. Better implementation of Real Time Dashboard in terms of products bar

codes selections

2. Implementation of real-time and dynamic pricing systems .

3. Inclusion of near-accurate expense of surgery operation in the service offered

(e.g. doctor fee, surgery tool, pet medicines, pet maintenance, insurance, etc.)

4. Mobile application of the system to further cater users due to ease of access.
