A touch screen is a display device that allows the user to ……………… with a computer by
using their ………… or…………... They can be a useful alternative to a mouse or keyboard for
navigating a GUI (graphical user interface). Touch screens are used on a variety of devices,
such as computer and laptop displays, smartphones, tablets, cash registers, and information
kiosks. Some touch screens use a grid of infrared beams to sense the presence of a finger
instead of utilizing touch-sensitive input.

One of the most significant differences between a mouse and a touch screen is the ability
to……………. Almost all touch screens can only detect input when the user’s finger is in direct
contact with the screen. However, a computer mouse uses a ……………. that allows the user to
view information by moving the pointer over an object, but not clicking on it. A user with a
touch screen cannot see the information because if he/she places his/her finger on the link, it
opens it.

Not all touch screens have the same functions, but the actions below are the most common:

………….- A single touch or tap on the screen with a finger opens an application or selects an
object. When compared to a traditional computer, it is the same as clicking with a mouse.

………………………. – it can have different functions depending on where it is utilized. For

example, in a browser, double-tapping the screen zooms the view centered at the tap location.
Double-tapping in a text editor can be used to select a word or section of words.

………………………………. - Pressing and holding the finger to a touch screen selects

or highlights an object.

………………- Pressing and holding the finger on a movable object, such as an icon, to "pull"
the object to a different location.

………………– Swiping the finger across the screen can be used to scroll in a certain direction
or change pages.

…………….- Placing two fingers on the screen in different spots and then pinching them
together zooms out. Pinching the fingers together and then moving them away from each other,
zooms in on the screen.

4 Computer Mouse
A  Read the text about the computer mouse and underline the
correct option from the words in bold.
The mouse, sometimes called a pointer, is a hand-operated input device used to
manipulate objects on a computer screen.

Whether the mouse uses a laser or ball, or is wired or wireless, a movement/moving

detected from the mouse sends instructions to the computer to move the cursor on the
screen in order to interact with files, windows, and other software elements.

Even though the mouse is a peripheral device that sits outside the main computer housing,
it's an essential piece of computer hardware in most systems.

Computer mice come in many shapes and sizes but are all designed to fit either the left or
right hand, and be used on a flat/uneven surface.

The standard mouse has two buttons toward the front (to left-click and right-click)
but/and a scroll wheel in the center (to quickly move the screen up and down). However,
a computer mouse can have anywhere from one to several more buttons to provide a wide
variety of other functions.

While older mice use a small ball on/for the bottom to control the cursor, newer ones use
a laser. Some/every computer mice instead have a large ball on top of the mouse so that
instead of moving the mouse across a surface to interact with the computer, the user
keeps the mouse stationary and instead moves the ball with a finger.

No matter what type of mouse is used, they/it all communicate with the computer either
wireless/wirelessly or via a physical, wired connection.

If wireless, mice connect to the computer either via (Radio Frequency) RF

communication or Bluetooth. An RF-based wireless mouse will require a receiver that
will physically attach/connect to the computer. A Bluetooth wireless mouse connects via
the computer's Bluetooth hardware.

If wired, mice connect to the computer via USB using a Type A connector. Older mice
connect via PS/2 ports. Either way, it's usually a direct connection to the motherboard.

While laptops, touch-screen phones/tablets, and other similar devices do not require a
mouse, they all use the same concept to communicate with the device. That is, a stylus,
trackpad, or the finger. However, most of these devices support using a mouse as an
optional attachment.

The mouse was originally referred to as an "X-Y position indicator for a display system"
and was nicknamed a "mouse" because of the tail-like cord that came out the end of it. It
was invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1963.

Prepositions are words which show the relationship between a noun, a pronoun or object
and some other words in the sentence. They are always followed by nouns or pronouns.
A prepositional phrase will begin with a preposition and end with a noun, pronoun,
gerund, or clause, the "object" of the preposition.
The object of the preposition will often have one or more modifiers to describe it.
Example:
1- The phone is on the desk. 3- She learns her lesson by singing.

2- I looked for her. 4- He talked to us about what he needs.
