SPELLING: ADDING THE SUFFIX -tion

Adding the suffix -tion to a verb changes the verb into a noun. In many cases, adding -tion
requires a spelling adjustment. For example, for the base word subscribe, the letters b and e at
the end are replaced with a p, and then the -tion is added. The noun formed is subscription. Here
are a few more examples:

• resolve + -tion = resolution

• receive + -tion = reception

• explain + -tion = explanation

A. DIRECTIONS: Add the suffix -tion to the verb in parentheses to form a noun to complete
each sentence. Make spelling adjustments as required. Check a dictionary to make sure you
have spelled each word correctly.
