Concept Notes
DANCE
Dance has been a part of Filipino life since time immemorial. Since ancient times, early
Filipinos have used rhythmic movements to express their emotions, beliefs, and faith. Most of
these movements are imitations of what they see in their environment such as the swaying of trees
and the motions of animals. In the long run, these rhythmic movements develop into dances that
have become part of peoples’ traditions.
Many of the dances in the past were performed as rituals to express gratitude or to make sacrifices
to gods and goddesses. Some dances were performed to celebrate life occasions and war victories.
Today, these dances are performed to practice the traditions of early Filipinos.
FOLK DANCE
What are the differences between folk, national, and ethnic dances?
Folk dances are traditional dances found in a certain country while nation dances
(Philippine folk dance) are also traditional folk dances but have a national scope. They are popular
and widely danced throughout a given country, often with a number of regional variations.
The Philippines dances Cariñosa, Curacha, and Pandango are examples, with several variations
coming from both Luzon and Visayan islands. Even within one locality, dancers have different
ways of performing it.
The first National Artist for Dance and the mother of Philippine Folk Dance is Francisca Reyes.
3
ETHNIC DANCE
What is Ethnic
dance?
Ethnic dance or ethological dances are those performed in primitive tribes and have
retained their close kinship with religious ritual and community custom. These dances may
“require a certain level of special performing skills” that are symbolic in meaning, making it
hard for those outside the group to understand. They can be performing in three different
categories, namely, ritual, life-cycle, and occupational.
In the Philippines, dances originated from the Ifugao people of northern Luzon, T’boli tribe from
Southern Mindanao, and Tagbanua tribe from Palawan are examples of ethnic dances. Below are
few examples of the different types of ethic dances:
Life-cycle dance
Occupational Dance
Ritual dance Dugso
All national and ethnic dances are folk dances, but not all folk dance is considered national or
ethnic dances.
4
What is Festival Dance?
FESTIVAL DANCE
A festival is an event usually marked as a local or national holiday celebrated by a
community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or
tradition. Festivals are usually associated with harvest, thanksgiving, appreciation and religious
commemoration.
In the Philippines, the Spanish word “fiesta” is used to denote a communal religious feast
to honor a patron or saint. Fiestas are important to many Filipinos because of the miraculous power
of their patron saints. It is one way of expressing gratitude to the saints for being responsible for
all good fortune and favor received. It is popular as the traditional dances which are celebrated as
cultural awareness that will be passed down to the next generation.
5
Dancing is one of the best fitness workouts. Dancing offers upbeat and inventive exercise
that promotes a healthier and more active lifestyle. Sociable, energizing and life-affirming, dance
has a whole host of body benefits, from aiding joint flexibility through to boosting mental
wellbeing.
Here are the reasons why dance is such a great fitness activity:
● Building muscular endurance
o Regular dance improves the endurance of body muscles, allowing them to work
harder for longer periods of time without feeling tired. Dancing also raises the
body’s heart rate to heighten stamina.
● Dancing improves the body’s flexibility
o A healthy body needs joints and muscles to be flexible; something that dance can
really help with. Most dance styles involve a great range of motion and movement,
allowing major muscle groups to be flexed and properly worked out. As a result,
the dancer’s body should soon become nimbler.
● Developing upper and lower body strength
o Dancing may not initially appear the best way to build your bodily strength into
that of a champion weightlifter. However, dance still offers a fine way of boosting
upper and lower body strength. Many dance styles require lifting, leaping and
prancing all of which require a muscular drive that builds up over time.
● Dance away the calories
o Whether your salsa dancing, gliding across a ballroom floor or tapping your toes to
some two-step rock, dance exercise offers an easy and enjoyable way to burn off
unwanted calories. A half hour of dancing can burn between 200 and 400 calories
so why not run away from that miserable treadmill training and dance along to the
fitness beat?
● Get stronger bones
o Dancing can help with the prevention of bone problems such as osteoporosis, with
dancing exercise allowing more calcium to be absorbed into the body’s bones.

15
● Star with the Left Hand – same as “Star with the Right hand” only join Left hands and
counterclockwise.
● Do-Si-Do (“Dos-a-Dos”) – The vis-à-vis (opposite) both advance forwards, pass each
other’s right (or left) side, step across to the right (or left), move backward without
turning around pass each other’s left (or right) side to proper places. This is of foreign
origin and is used in many Philippine dance
Intensity
Intensity has to do with how hard you work during exercise. How you can change
the intensity depends on the type of workout you're doing. For dance, the intensity
will depend on what kind of dance you're going to train or practice. Not all dances
require high intensity. Like some in folk dance and contemporary dance, they did
not require a full power of energy to perform instead of a moderate level only.
16
Time
The next element of your workout plan is how long you exercise through each session. There isn't
one set rule for how long you should exercise, and it will typically depend on your
fitness level and the type of workout you're doing. Same in the context of dance it
will depend on the type of dance or time you set for practice.
Type
The type of exercise you do is the last part of the F.I.T.T. principle and an easy one
to manipulate to avoid overuse injuries or weight loss plateaus. In dance, this
principle will focus on what specific dance you choose: it can be dance, Ethnic,
Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, or Modern.
The table below is an example of a Dance Program Plan using the F.I.T.T. Principles
17
Guided/Independent Practice
Modelling: The instructor will demonstrate first the proper execution of the different dance terms
under hand & foot movement to show to the students how each movement should be executed.
Guided Practice: The instructor will ask the students to follow the proper execution of each hand
and foot movements.
Independent Practice: Create your first draft of your Dance Program Plan using the basic hand
and foot movements. In designing the dance program plan, it should include the F.I.T.T principle,
five (5) hand and five (5) foot movements. Use the table below.
18
REFLECTION – ACTION
Instructions: Fill in the third column by writing two (2) things you have learned from the
lesson. You can limit your answers to clauses and/or phrases. Ensure that your answers are still
connected with your previous answers from the Prelection.
1. How are you going to maintain your health-related fitness using the FITT
Principle? Provide one to two examples.

What is Masskara Festival?
Originally, the masks reflect the people’s grief over the loss of their loved ones when, 1979,
passenger carrying vessel MS. Don Juan crashed with a tanker. It led to the big drop of sugar
production. The people of Negros struggled from the excess sugar in the world market caused by
Carribean crisis and high fructose corn syrup introduced by the United States. These events
proceeded to the observance of the first Masskara Festival in 1980. The masks used in the festival
intends to give awareness regarding the crisis happening in Negros and later changed into street
dancing and merry-making festival. The imagery of the masks was purposely used to hide the
suffering and lifting the spirits of the Negrenses despite of tragedy. Masskara became one of the
famous entertainment in Negros, catching numbers of people from local and international countries
to watch the festivity. The festival is annually celebrated in the month of October.
Street dancing is common during Masskara
festival wherein dancers wear luminous and
shining costumes and a smiling mask which
symbolizes Bacolod as the “City of Smiles”.
Street dancing contest is the highlight of the
whole festival. It was intended to give
encouragement and hope despite crisis
encounters such as the sugar problem. The dances are very grooving, hyped, and lively which
carries the watchers to smile throughout the celebration.
Festivals are great ways of infusing refreshed air in our lives. It brings the community to
be as one in celebrating joyful events. It also helped people to recall the stories behind the
society of today through understanding its history.
