CHAPTER IV

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEM

The development of an automatic disinfection tunnel using a hybrid

electrical supply system is developed to maximize the automatic disinfection

tunnel even in a power outage or don't have access. The project was designed to

quickly shift either the power from a solar power system or the electricity from an

electrical distributor.

The project's prototype comprises a solar power system and automation

control for disinfection. The solar power system comprises a solar panel, solar

charge controller, and battery. At the same time, the automation control makes

up of a relay, switch, motion sensor, and water pump. These components are

organized into a built case to give it a clean look and easy access if needed for

maintenance or repair. The solar panel is raised to charge appropriately and to

avoid electrocution. The prototype motion sensor range was adjusted to detect

motion only upon entering the tunnel.

47

Figure 23 The overview of the project’s prototype.

SYSTEM FEATURES

The construction of an automatic disinfection tunnel using a hybrid

electrical supply system has the benefit of reducing the electricity costs due to

the solar energy system. The project also uses the electric source from electrical

distribution companies like Meralco for the automatic disinfection tunnel, allowing

it to continue operating even after the solar battery is empty or low in charge. The

project can also be used even if there is a power outage, unlike conventional

automatic disinfection tunnels that can only use one power source.

The motion sensor sends a signal to the relay when someone enters the

tunnel, starts the water pump, and sprays the disinfection solution. The existing

automatic disinfection tunnel has this function; however, the technology and

components are different in this project. The tunnel was built with low-cost
48

materials such as PVC pipe and a plastic cover, but it was reinforced to

withstand unforeseen crashes and high winds.

The researcher utilized low-cost materials to be resourceful for the

automatic disinfection tunnel project employing a hybrid on-grid system, and the

material and equipment function as intended.

Figure 24 The Operating Control System of the Project.

TESTING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM

The researcher first plugs in the project's prototype power supply to an

electric provider Meralco. Before turning on the main switch, the researcher tests

the power supply's output voltage to match the needed supply for the load. After

that, the researcher fills the disinfectant solution container with water for testing

purposes. The researcher also checks if the nozzle is appropriately labeled and

secured. Next, the researcher tested the motion sensor to detect motion and
49

adjusted its range so it would only detect motion upon entering the disinfection

tunnel.

The design of the project's prototype used a hybrid electrical supply

system. The researcher checked the solar power system components were

connected correctly. The researcher checks the solar charge controller to check

if it reads the battery and the solar panel. Then test if the battery is charging

correctly and if the solar panels harvest power. Finally, the researcher tested if

the prototype works the same when powered by the Meralco.

The following data below shows the project’s result upon successfully testing:

1. After connecting the solar power components, the solar charge controller

(SCC) read the solar panel and the solar battery.

2. The researcher found that the output pressure of the water pump is

suitable enough for this project’s prototype.

3. The motion sensor has a 10 to 15-second delay upon existing the

disinfection tunnel, and the detection sensitivity is calibrated to avoid

giving a signal from a minimal gesture.

4. The researcher found that the output released by the nozzle head is

particularly larger than the expected outcome but works to its purpose and

function.

5. The automatic transfer switch works perfectly smoothly from shifting from

one to another power source.

50

PROJECT EVALUATION

The researcher conducted a series of tests to check the project's

acceptability. The test includes visual inspection, component testing, continuity

test, and final testing to assess if there are any problems.

To ensure the acceptability of the project, the researcher performed a final

evaluation of twenty (20) randomly selected students, composed of five (5)

electrical students, five (5) non-electrical students from the College of

Technology Management (CTM), and ten (10) randomly selected student from

different colleges of the University of Makati (UMAK). The objective of this

grouping is to understand how each group regards the project’s practicality and

acceptability.

The performance of the developed prototype was assessed using five

standard assessment criteria: the design, the convenience of usage, safety in

operation, portability, and maintenance requirements. Respondents can choose

from one to five levels for each criterion, with one being the lowest and five being

the highest. The project evaluation used weighted mean X to determine the level

of acceptability of the project after tabulating the data gathered. The numerical

value of the overall mean was comprehended according to the descriptive

equivalent as follows:

Table 10 shows the acceptability level of the automatic disinfection tunnel

that utilizes the use of a hybrid electrical supply system from the evaluator's

panel for each criterion as follows:

Construction of the Design

61

The design of the project’s prototype got the highest aggregated mean

with a 4.80 rating with a descriptive equivalent excellent rating. Among the panel

of evaluators, the electrical students give the highest rating of 4.85, which means

that the construction of the design appears to be interesting. Hence, an

aggregated mean of 4.80 ratings shows that the quality of the design

craftsmanship is accomplished based on the project market standard.

Ease of using the Project

The project’s prototype appears to be simple to operate even without a

background in electrical or electronics for the operator to use the prototype

because it got an aggregate mean of 4.76 ratings with an excellent rating. This

suggests that the project’s prototype acceptability looks user-friendly.

Safety in Operating the Device

The disinfection tunnel is an instrument used as an innovative protection

device amidst this Corona Virus pandemic. Among the evaluators, the students

from the different colleges of the University of Makati give the lowest mean rating

of 4.63, which still have an excellent descriptive rating. This suggests that even

with an aggregate mean of 4.72 ratings, the project's prototype may need more

improvement in the protective device to comply with the safety standards.

Portability of the Project

62

Among the different criteria for the project's acceptability, the portability

got the lowest aggregate mean rating of 4.65. This suggests that the project

structure may need a lot of attention while transporting from one place to another

and may need improvement in the material used for the tunnel frame.

Maintenance Requirements

The maintenance requirements refer to maintaining the project's working

condition and smooth operation to avoid an accident. The aggregate mean of the

three evaluators got an average of 4.74 ratings, which is equivalent to an

excellent rating. This indicates that the project’s components are easy to

maintain and repair if theirs has broken or malfunctioning parts.

Table 11 demonstrates the overall mean rating of the combined means of

the various criteria. As shown in the table, the automatic disinfection tunnel had

an overall mean of 4.76, which has a very strong descriptive equivalent of an

Excellent rating. This final assessment of the statistical analysis shows that the

development of an automatic disinfection tunnel is deemed acceptable to utilize

the technology of a hybrid electrical supply system to ensure continuous power

supply
