Lab # 01

Title

Introduction to Microwave test and measurement systems.

Objective

At the end of this lab, Students will be equipped with the important microwave devices being
commonly used in the market.

Apparatus

No apparatus will be issued to the students during this lab.

Procedure

This is introductory lab. The students will be shown different types of microwave devices and
Wave guides which available in this lab. Students will be shown the equipment to be used for
the testing in the subsequent labs.

Tasks

Student will be required to submit a report which will contain a brief description of all the
microwave devices being used in Brief Description Section of lab 01.

Precautions

Please handle the shown equipment with care.

Measurements

No measurement is required for this lab.

Important Notes:

1. Handle the equipment with care.

2. Labs will be conducted in a group of 3-4 students.

Abstract:
This is an introductory lab in which we learned about different instruments for microwave
tests and measurements. Vector Network Analyzer, Anechoic Chamber and basic tests of
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) were studied along with their working purposes and
uses in microwave engineering.

Objectives:
At the end of this lab, Students will be equipped with the important microwave devices being
commonly used in the market.

I. Questions
1. What is the Technical name of the absorbing material used inside the Anechoic
Chamber?
Anechoic Chamber are covered with radiation absorbent material (RAM).

2. Why Absorbing Material is required inside Anechoic Chamber?

Absorbing Material is required inside Anechoic Chamber so that a person or detector
exclusively absorb EM waves in effect simulating being inside an infinitely large
room. The detector would be able to receive EM waves without attenuation. So, it can
perform measurements of antenna radiation.

3. Name two field of regions for which testing can be carried out inside Anechoic
Chamber?
 Near Field Radiation Patterns
 Far Field Radiation Patterns

4. What is the difference between above two regions in terms of frequency and
wavelength?
 For Near Field (<2d2/lambda)
 For Far Field (>2d2/lambda)

5. What is the procedure for testing more than two port device on Network
Analyzer?
Two ports are connected directly to VNA while remaining ports are terminated using
50-ohm termination.

Conclusion:
Different instruments for microwave tests and measurements are familiarized to us in
the lab along with their technical aspects and their uses in field of microwave
engineering. Anechoic Chamber differentiating of near field and far field radiation
patterns and VNA connection for testing more than two port device is discussed.
