a. Explain the objectives of physical and health education

b. Demonstrate appreciation of the importance of the objectives of PE and Health
c. List down top objectives for PE and Health education

Introduction

Physical education is widely characterized as the organization of games, sports, or other physical
education activities in schools. At these times, it has been observed that the majority of students are
either left alone to play games in their own way or are taken to the field to participate in various sports
without the instruction or supervision of teachers. In some schools, only a few students participate in
sports like volleyball, basketball and so on. All of these encounters add up to a fundamental
understanding of physical education as a notion. When we look at the goals, objectives, and
principles of physical education in greater detail, we see that they go beyond these conventional
beliefs.

Pre-Test. True or False

Physical Education

Definitions

1. According to Webster’s Dictionary

Physical education is an integral part of education which gives instructions in the development
and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenic exercises to a course of study providing
training in hygiene, gymnastics and the performance and management of athletics game.
2. Columbia Encyclopedia
Physical education and training are an organized instruction in motor activities that contribute
to the physical growth, health and body image of the individual.
3. Central Advisory Board of Physical Education and Recreation defines physical education
through physical activities for the development of total personality of the child to its fullness
and perfection in body, mind and spirit.

While “Any combination of learning experiences designed to facilitate voluntary actions conducive
to health” is how health education is defined (Green and Kreuter 2005). Despite the fact that
health education has a long history dating back to the nineteenth century, it was not until the
1940s that it became a separate discipline. Health education's theory and practice base has
evolved over time, moving away from one-on-one and mass media behavioral interventions to
include responsibility for policies, structures, and environments that influence population health.
The terms health education and health promotion (the latter including an ecological approach) are
often used interchangeably in the early twenty-first century.

As we all know, education, especially school education, aims to help children grow holistically. It
helps students to grow and evolve as adults in order to be useful members of society. It is vital
that we recognize that one of the most important conditions for maturing into healthy adults is
physical growth that promotes cognitive development.

As a result, it is important that all children have enough opportunities to engage in free play,
informal and formal games, athletics, and yoga practices. In this sense, fitness has been made a
significant component of the Physical Education subject in the country's school education system.
The course “Health and Physical Education” takes a holistic approach to recovery.

Objectives of Physical Education

The main objectives of physical education are to:

 Develop motor abilities like strength, speed, endurance, coordination, flexibility, agility and
balance as they are important aspects for good performance in different games and sports.
 Develop techniques and tactics involved in organized physical activities, games and sports.
 Acquire knowledge about human body as its functioning is influenced by physical activities.
 Understand the process of growth and development as participation in physical activities
has positive relationship with it.
 Develop socio-psychological aspects like control of emotions, balanced behavior,
development of leadership and followership qualities and team spirit through participation in
games and sports.
 Develop positive health related fitness habits which can be practiced lifelong so as to
prevent degenerative diseases.

According to the K-12 Curriculum Guide in PE and Health, here are the learning outcomes and
standards which serve as our basis and guide teaching the subject.

Physical Education

Learning Outcomes
The K to 12 PE Curriculum develops the students’ skills in accessing, synthesizing and evaluating
information, making informed decisions, enhancing and advocating their own and others’ fitness and
health. The knowledge, understanding and skills underpin the competence, confidence and
commitment required of all students to live an active life for fitness and health.

The K to 12 PE Curriculum prioritizes the following standards:

1. Habitual physical activity participation to achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of fitness.
2. Competence in movement and motor skills requisite to various physical activity performances.
3. Valuing physical activities for enjoyment, challenge, social interaction and career opportunities.

4. Understanding various movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the
learning of physical activity.

Health

Health Education from Kindergarten to Grade 10 focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, as well
as the social, moral and spiritual dimensions of holistic health. It enables the learners to acquire
essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills that are necessary to promote good nutrition; to prevent and
control diseases; to prevent substance misuse and abuse; to reduce health-related risk behaviors; to
prevent and control injuries with the end-view of maintaining and improving personal, family,
community, as well as global health.

Health Education emphasizes the development of positive heath attitudes and relevant skills in order
to achieve a good quality of living. Thus, the focus on skills development is explicitly demonstrated in
the primary grade levels. Meanwhile, a comprehensive body of knowledge is provided in the upper
year levels to serve as a foundation in developing desirable health attitudes, habits and practices.

In order to facilitate the development of health literacy competencies, the teacher is highly
encouraged to use developmentally-appropriate learner-centered teaching approaches. This includes
scaffolding on student experience and prior learning; utilizing culture-responsive scenarios and
materials; incorporating arts, and music in imparting health messages; engaging learners in
meaningful games and cooperative learning activities; and using life skills and value-based strategies
particularly in discussing sensitive topics such as substance abuse and sexuality. The teacher is also
advised to use differentiated instruction in order to cater to the learners’ various needs and abilities.
