Leadership and Social Responsibility

Identifying my Leadership style

As a current student leader and a past group leader from my recent years way back in
high school, I agree with the result that I got as a Democratic Leader. I’m usually the type of
leader who often wants assurance from the group as well as I encourage everyone to be vocal
on their concerns and suggestions. I don’t normally label myself as a leader since I mostly give
them the liberty to add such details to their task as well as suggest the plan of action before
executing it. Though as much as I give them the liberty, I make sure to always check their
outputs beforehand if there are further revisions to make. As a democratic leader, I also often
encounter hindrances beyond my group mates such as not actively participating, clueless about
the topic assigned or just showing up on the day of the submission and presentation. My actions
on the said hindrances will always be to communicate and encourage one to actively
participate. It's also my number one duty to not get into my emotions when such situations get
overwhelming since I'm the standing representative that holds the group together.

From what I researched regarding leadership styles, I believe that a leader nowadays
must possess an Authoritative Leadership. As I'm trying to adapt to this kind of leadership
nowadays since I'm aiming for a higher position in the office, I observed that our current
directors are really well coordinated with the task and giving out adequate information on what
the committee must do on the specific event. It really amazes me how they handle the pressure
of heavy workloads from academics plus the organizational tasks especially when they are
pre-med students like me. One thing for sure, an authoritative leader possesses consistency
and power to be able to have control on the whole committee. This style of leader must also
have the complete overview of the whole process throughout the input and output of the task in
order to track the progress, to identify revisions and to brief the group upon the execution and
presentation of the project.

What does it take for a person to lead and have control of the group? From what I've
learned and encountered, I must say that the key characteristics of a leader are consistency and
effective communication with one another. As a leader who often has trust issues, I always
encourage my group to give their feedback on our output and if we have remained consistent
with our work may it be a paper or performance task. Consistency to show up in every session,
may it be brainstorming or inputting the task is vital to a person leading because as long as the
presence of the leader is consistent, the more their groupworks will be at ease and focused on
their assigned tasks. Consistency also applies to the progress of the project since this keeps the
contents of the project all aligned as well as the performance wherein, consistent practice will
surely result in positive outputs. Lastly is effective communication, as I have stated in the
previous sentences, this characteristic is vital since this keeps the group intact and working. In
having effective communication skills as a leader we must make sure to take control of our
emotions, give valid considerations and circulate appropriate informations assigned to their task.
In conclusion, being a leader is obviously difficult as there are expected negative occurrences
but as long as we know our responsibilities as a leader, it is possible to presume a positive
output or result from the project the group has worked hard for.
