CRITERIA D
i. Identify relevant elements of authentic real-life situations
ii. Select appropriate mathematical strategies when solving authentic real-life situations
iii. Apply the selected mathematical strategies successfully to reach a solution
iv. Justify the degree of accuracy of a solution
v. Justify whether a solution makes sense in the context of the authentic real-life
situation.

In North American folklore, Bigfoot or Sasquatch is a hairy, upright-walking, ape-like
creature who reportedly dwells in the wilderness and leaves behind footprints. Strongly
associated with the Pacific Northwest, individuals claim to see the creature across North
America. Over the years, the creature has inspired numerous commercial ventures and
hoaxes.
Above is a an article depicting a footprint found of the illusive ‘Bigfoot’ and on the next
page are the measurements of the foot shown in the photo. In this in class activity you will
use your own proportions and measurements gathered by investigative reporters, to
determine the height and weight of Bigfoot.
Above is a photo of Bigfoot’s, supposed footprint, measuring in at just about 16 inches.
Use this photo and information above to help you fill in the chart below:
You Bigfoot
Height in Inches
Calculate the proportion of your foot size to your height.
Using the previous calculation, calculate the height of Bigfoot.
Reports claim that p eople who have seen Bigfoot, describe it as a large, hairy, muscular,
bipedal ape-like creature, roughly 6–9 feet (1.8–2.7 m) in height. How accurate do you
feel these claims are? Justify y our answer using your work from the previous page.
The weight of a figure can be found using the Cube-Square Law of Physics which is
represented below
Where l1 is your height, l2 is Bigfoot’s height, V1 is your weight, and the result of this is
V2, Bigfoot’s weight.
Use the table below to guide your work:
You Bigfoot
Height in inches
Weight in pounds
What was the proportion of Bigfoot’s height to your height?
What was Bigfoot’s weight?
One Bigfoot was reported near Fresno, California in 1895; it’s weight was estimated at
2,000 pounds (900 kg). How accurate do you feel these estimates are? J ustify your
answer using your work from the previous page.
