The half of Grade I- Ruby learners of Tugos Elementary School have difficulties in
blending specific letters to form syllables and words. They find it difficult to blend specific
letters to form syllables and words because blending is a crucial skill that every child needs to
communicating is indeed very important skill that every learner must have. In writing,
speaking and communicating using English language especially in first graders, one
should have a knowledge in blending specific letters to form syllables and words
because blending is the skill that helps them read and speak, especially when
confronted with unfamiliar words. For young children like in Grade 1, most words are
unfamiliar and they will need to blend many of the words they encounter. It involves
pushing together the sounds of the letters in the word in order to create the whole
word. For example, a child trying to read the word ‘fish’, will isolate each of the letter
sounds. When these three sounds are said in sequence, the word ‘fish’ is spoken.

Blending is the ability to put letter sounds together to read a word. To read a
word, children must know the sounds the letters represent in the word and be able to
blend those sounds to come up with the correct word. For example, after children
know the letter sounds /f/ for f, /ĭ/ for i, and /sh/ for sh, they learn to blend those
sounds together to read the whole word. When they see the word fish, they are able to
say, "/f/ /ĭ/ /sh/, fish." We call this, blending because you are putting sounds together
to read a word.
Half of the Grade I learners already know the sounds of some but not all the
letters of the alphabet , and that is why it seems to be difficult for them to blend letter
sounds in forming a word. This lesson will be a great help for them to be familiar with
the different letters of the alphabet which will surely develop their skills in learning
language.
The Grade I learners will use the learnings in order to speak fluently using
English language. As their adviser during their first grade, I was able to identify my
students who are having difficulty in reading specially in blending sounds of the
