speaker’s credibility. Below are the ethics in public speaking.
• Prepare well for the speech. Facing the crowd ready is the basic example of showing
respect towards your audience. Conducting the necessary research, mastering the delivery,
and wearing appropriate attire are some ways of preparing well for a speech.
• Do not offend anyone. Make your speech sensitive to gender and race. Respect everyone
in the room. Do not make fun of your audience. Make fun of yourself instead. Remember
that your audience is present to listen and not to get embarrassed. Treat your audience the
way you want to be treated as an audience.
• Follow the time allotted to you. Start and end on time because there could be other
speakers after you. It also shows that you are not abusing the chance given to you to speak.
Exceeding time allotment likewise has a negative impact on the event and organizers.
• Turn off any gadget in your possession. You do not want these to produce any sound that
might distract or disturb your delivery.
• Greet the audience appropriately. Begin by greeting those with the highest honor or
distinction based on position or achievement. In order to address them correctly, find out
the names of the expected attendees. Act in the manner that is consistent with the message
of the speech.
• Reflect what you say. Make sure that your facial expression projects the message or the
content of your speech. Smiling or looking happy when you are saying something
depressing will be insulting to your audience. To appear disinterested in what you say will
also disappoint your listener.
• Observe correct proximity. Proximity refers to your distance from the audience.
Remember to maintain a respectable distance to avoid any misinterpretation.
• Present information with reliable sources. You do not want to misinform and confuse
your audience. Remember that your arguments must be based on clear evidence and details
sourced from authorities on the subject. Likewise, make sure that your audience can follow
the flow of your speech.
• Provide a conclusion. Conclude your speech based on the data you presented.
 Walk the talk. It means “practice what you preach.” Always be consistent with your
words and actions. If in your speech you emphasize that everyone must be punctual,
make sure that you yourself would come to any event on time.
