Section 1 – Product Description

1-1. Product Description
The DiskReader Option for Print Server (DiskReader) supports the addition of disk drives and a color
printer to the Print Server for DICOM (PSD) product. The DiskReader allows the images captured by
Ultrasound or C-Arm devices to be processed and printed to either a Kodak Laser Imager for black and
white images or to a Sony Color Printer for color images.
The DiskReader supports RDOS format on 5.25” Bernoulli (20MB) and RDOS or DEFF formats on 3.5”
Magneto-Optical (128/230MB) disks. A minimal system configuration consists of a single disk drive and the
DiskReader application software. The maximum configuration has four disk drives (any combination of
Bernoulli and MO types), a color printer, and the DiskReader application software.
Figure 1-1 shows the general configuration of the system.

Figure 1-1. DiskReader System Diagram

There are two possible configurations for the DiskReader system:

Combination DiskReader/PSD: This system has the capability of processing and printing the
images read from the locally connected disk drive(s) as well as processing and printing images
coming from a local area network in DICOM Version 3.0 Print Management Service Class.
Stand-alone DiskReader: Images are read by the locally connected disk drive(s), processed, and
printed to a directly connected Kodak Laser Imager or Sony Color Printer.

Section 2 – Theory of Operation

2-1. Theory of Operation
The DiskReader software resides within the SUN SPARC computer. Medical images are read from the
external Bernoulli and/or Magneto-Optical disk drives, processed, and printed. Processed black and white
images are passed through the DiskReader application software for printing to a Kodak Laser Imager,
whereas the color images are handled within the DiskReader software and are sent to a Sony Color
Printer.
Figure 2-1 is a block diagram of the entire system, DiskReader and PSD. The PSD components (LI Server,
DICOM Server, and Laser Interface Board) are described in Section 2 of the Print Server for DICOM (PSD)
Service Manual. The DiskReader components (dskrdr Driver, diskReader, sonySplr, and dcp Driver) are
described below. AdminApp is an administration tool used to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the
system; it is common to both the DiskReader and PSD software applications.

Kodak
Laser
Imager

Figure 2-1. DiskReader Theory of Operation Block Diagram

dskrdr Driver
The dskrdr Driver resides in the operating system kernel and controls the operation of the external disk
drives (e.g., read data, eject disk, run diagnostic, etc.).

diskReader
The diskReader is a software module responsible for sensing the presence of a disk in the external disk
drive and upon detection, prepares to process the image data from the disk. Disks can be written in RDOS
or DEFF formats. The diskReader separates the control information from the image data and creates
pages of images to be printed. If the images are identified as black and white, then they are passed to the
Kodak 9400AUD DiskReader for Print Server Addendum
Section 2 – Theory of Operation
1999 Rev. B 2-2

PSD application software for printing to a Kodak Laser Imager. If the diskReader detects color images, it
stores them with all of the printing information on the hard disk, then sends a message to the sonySplr
identifying the storage location of the images.
sonySplr
The sonySplr module is responsible for printing color images to a Sony Color Printer. It retrieves the
images from the hard disk, passes them through the dcp Driver where they are printed by the Sony Color
Printer. Images that print successfully are deleted from the hard disk. Unsuccessful print attempts result in
print jobs being requeued and retried.

dcp Driver
The dcp Driver resides in the operating system kernel and controls the operation of the Sony Color Printer.
It receives the image data, creates printer commands, and sends the command and image data to the
Sony Color Printer for printing. The dcp Driver also receives status information from the printer and passes
it back to the sonySplr software modules.

DICOM Server, LI Server, li3m Driver, and Laser Interface Board

These components are described in the PSD Service Manual, Section 2. Theory of Operation.

Section 3 – Installation
3-1. Installation
This section contains installation and setup procedures for the following items:
3-2. Memory Expansion Option
3-3. Preliminary Information
3-4. Location and Placement Considerations
3-5. Setting Peripheral SCSI IDS
3-6. Connecting Peripheral Cables
3-7. Initializing the SCSI Bus
3-8. Checking the DiskReader for Application Software

3-2. Memory Expansion Option

The DiskReader system uses the 64MB of memory that comes standard with the SUN SPARC computer.
However, the customer may have purchased a 32MB Memory Expansion Option for the SUN SPARC CPU
board. Check the purchase/shipping order to see if a 32MB SIMM was ordered. Refer to Section 5-2 for the
procedure for installing the additional memory.

3-3. Preliminary Information

There are two possible configurations for the DiskReader product: 1) a combination disk reader and a
network print server; and 2) a stand-alone disk reader. The primary difference between these two options is
whether or not you activate the network capability of the PSD. The stand-alone DiskReader relies on the
PSD for printing to a Kodak Laser Imager regardless of the network configuration.
Before installing the DiskReader option, note the following:
If this installation is a combination DiskReader and network PSD, all phases of the PSD installation
process must be completed as described in the Print Server for DICOM (PSD) Service Manual before
beginning the DiskReader Option installation.
If this installation is a stand-alone DiskReader, perform the PSD installation process as described in the
PSD Service Manual noting the procedural variations listed here:
– When completing the Network Configuration (Sections 3 and 6 of the PSD Service Manual),
answer NO to the “Connected to the Network?” question and complete the section as per
the normal PSD setup.
– There is no need to perform the PSD Contrast Test procedure. This procedure is for ensuring
image quality of images being sent over a network from DICOM Version 3.0 compatible
modalities. The DiskReader has its own Contrast Test feature and procedure.

Section 3 – Installation
1999 Rev. B 3-2

3-4. Location and Placement Considerations

The DiskReader peripherals (disk drives and color printer) are connected to the SUN SPARC via the SCSI
bus connector in daisy-chain fashion. Due to the length limitations of the SCSI bus protocol, the
interconnecting cables between devices are fixed at 1 meter lengths. Therefore the DiskReader peripherals
are in close proximity to the SUN SPARC.
Figure 3-1 shows the stacking convention for a fully configured DiskReader system. If the system does not
contain a Sony Color Printer, then drive 1 will be connected to the SUN SPARC. Remember to place the
SCSI Terminator on the last drive in the chain.

Figure 3-1. Stacking for a Fully Configured DiskReader System

Section 3 – Installation
1999 Rev. B 3-3

3-5. Setting Peripheral SCSI IDs

Components on a SCSI bus system must have unique identifiers assigned to them. The following chart
shows the numbering convention used by the DiskReader/PSD:

SCSI Component Assigned

ID

0 Sony Color Printer

1 External Disk Drive (Bernoulli/MO)

2 External Disk Drive (Bernoulli/MO)

3 SUN SPARC Internal Hard Disk

4 External Disk Drive (Bernoulli/MO)

5 External Disk Drive (Bernoulli/MO)

6 SUN SPARC CD ROM Drive

7 SCSI Controller

Note
If there is a Sony Color Printer in the DiskReader configuration, it is always SCSI ID 0.

The standard numbering scheme for the External Disk Drives in the DiskReader system is:

1st External Disk Drive SCSI ID = 4

2nd External Disk Drive SCSI ID = 5

3rd External Disk Drive SCSI ID = 2

4th External Disk Drive SCSI ID = 1

See Section 5-5 for procedural information on how to set the SCSI IDs.

3-6. Connecting Peripheral Cables

Note
When connecting cables, use cable restraints in all circumstances where cables may become
dislodged.

There are two styles of SCSI cables for the DiskReader system. The first is referred to as a SCSI 2 to SCSI
1 and is recognizable by a small 50 pin high density connector (SCSI 2) on one end and a larger 50 pin
Centronics type connector (SCSI 1) on the other end. The SCSI 2 to SCSI 1 cable is always the first cable
and is connected to the SUN SPARC with the SCSI 2 connector and the first peripheral device with the
SCSI 1 connector. See Figure 3-2 for the SCSI port location on the SUN SPARC.
The second cable style is a SCSI 1 to SCSI 1 and is used to daisy-chain the remaining peripherals
together.
Kodak 9400AUD DiskReader for Print Server Addendum
Section 3 – Installation
1999 Rev. B 3-4

There are typically 2 SCSI connectors on the back of a SCSI peripheral device. The connectors are
internally wired in parallel, so either connector may serve as an input, output, or termination connection.

3-7. Inializing the SCSI Bus

After the DiskReader peripherals have been daisy-chained together, initialize the SCSI bus by performing
the following steps:
1. With the SUN SPARC powered off, connect the laptop PC to serial port A of the SUN SPARC using a
null modem cable. See Figure 3-2 for serial port location.
2. Powerup the laptop and run Hyper Terminal or equivalent communication software. (See the PSD
Service Manual, Appendix A, for Procomm setup.)
3. Powerup all DiskReader peripheral devices (external drives and color printer).
4. Powerup the SUN SPARC.
5. Approximately 3 minutes after powerup, a login: prompt appears.
6. At the login: prompt, type root
7. At the password: prompt, type Stillwater (remember that Unix is case sensitive.)
8. At the # prompt, type init 0 (0 is a zero)
9. The system begins to shut down in an orderly fashion. Be patient. An ok prompt appears on the screen
when the system is completely down.
10. At the ok prompt, type boot –r (there is a space between boot and the dash preceding the r). The
system boots to the login: prompt, but interrogates the SCSI bus as part of the booting sequence.
This SCSI interrogation allows the system to recognize DiskReader peripherals that were added to the
system.

3-8. Checking the DiskReader for Application Software

If the DiskReader Option is being added to an existing PSD, go directly to Section 5-3 for instructions on
how to load the DiskReader application software.
If the DiskReader system was shipped to this account from the factory, perform the steps in this section.
The manufacturing process includes software loading, however verification is still appropriate:
1. At the login: prompt, type root
2. At the password: prompt, type Stillwater
3. At the # prompts, type the following:
cd /opt/mmmims/bin
ls
Among others, the system should display the following programs if the DiskReader software is loaded:
diskReader
sonySplr
restartUDR
If these files do not appear, proceed to Section 5-3 for loading DiskReader application software.
If the files are listed, type exit at the # prompt. This returns the system to the login: prompt.

3-9. DiskReader Configuration Setup

1. At the login: prompt, type mmmims
2. At the password: prompt, type mmmims1
3. To configure the DiskReader software, go to the configuration menu by making the following selections
starting at the AdminApp main menu:
Select Server Operation
Select DiskReader 3MUDR psd
Select Configuration
Select Modify Configurations. The Disk Reader Configuration menu appears.
4. The Disk Reader Configuration menu is divided into Update and View options. This menu is long since
the system allows for 20 User Configurations plus a Systemwide Configuration. The menu displays a
page of selections at a time and provides the opportunity of typing s, when prompted, to end the
scrolling mode and allow selection of the desired choice.
5. For efficiency, it may be best to View the selection first (i.e. Systemwide Setup, User 1, etc.) because
the default setup may very well be appropriate and may need only verification. If the Update option is
chosen, note that the default values are indicated within [brackets]. A Return with no entries accepts
the bracketed values.
6. Perform the Systemwide Setup according to Table 3-1.

the newly added images to a previously
printed disk are printed. ALL is the
default.
ReRoute Operation NONE, ALL, SPOOL NONE means that if the required
printer is unavailable, the disk is
immediately ejected and no images are
read or processed. ALL means that if
the required printer is unavailable,
images are routed to the other printer
(i.e. B&W images will be sent to the
color printer and color images would be
sent to the Laser Imager). SPOOL
causes the images to be stored on the
internal hard disk if the required printer
is unavailable. NONE is the default.
Print ‘Exam # – Film # – YES, NO YES enables this option and places the
User #’ on B&W Films listed information on the film. NO
disables the feature. The feature does
not function for a Kodak 959 XL Laser
Imager. YES is the default.

7. The DiskReader Option does not provide an interface to the user, so they are unable to change density,
contrast, or filming formats themselves. All configuration setups and changes require a service
technician to connect to the SUN SPARC either directly or via the modem with a laptop PC. Therefore,
some preliminary planning is necessary.
For example, if a customer wants to have the ability to choose between two formats (e.g. 6:1 and 12:1)
from a single modality, then that modality is assigned two user numbers in the DiskReader
configuration: one configured to provide 6:1 format and the other to provide 12:1 format.
Once the customer’s needs are identified, perform the User Setups according to Table 3-2 beginning
with User Number 1. Note that the DiskReader allows for 20 User Setups. It is not necessary to
configure unused User Number entries; the default values are appropriate.

8. Selection 99 exits the Disk Reader Configuration menu, returning to the DiskReader_Config menu.

3-10. Running the DiskReader Contrast Test

The Contrast Test is used to established the best density and contrast setting for each User Number set up
in the DiskReader configuration table. It requires coordination between the Kodak technician and the
customer. The process is one of selecting a desired density, loading the image disk from the modality
(Ultrasound, C-Arm, etc.), and then examining the test film. Each film has 15 images, one at each contrast
table setting. The process is repeated with different density settings, yielding a set of films across a range
of densities and corresponding contrast tables. Working with the customer, establish the desired density
and contrast setting, and then enter those values in the User Number Setup process.
Procedural Information:
1. Ensure the modality and image capturing device is in good calibration. Store an image on disk that
would be a good candidate for assessing image quality.
2. Select Contrast Test from the DiskReader_Config menu.
3. Enter the density value desired and press Return. The value is entered as a 3 digit value (e.g. desired
density value of 2.7 is entered as 270, 3.0 as 300, etc.). Note that the last digit of the density value is
always 0. Press Return again to return to the DiskReader_Config menu.
4. Insert the disk in the MO or Bernoulli drive of the DiskReader and allow the system to generate a film.
5. Repeat steps 2 – 4 until the desired range of test films have been generated.
6. Work with the customer to determine the best density and contrast setting to apply to images coming
from this modality.
7. Determine how many user numbers this modality requires (remember that if this modality requires the
ability to select different formats, i.e., 6:1, 12:1, etc., they need a different user number for each format).
Kodak 9400AUD DiskReader for Print Server Addendum
Section 3 – Installation
1999 Rev. B 3-9

8. Get to the Disk Reader Configuration menu by selecting Modify Configurations from the
DiskReader_Config menu. Use the Update User Number Setup to enter the format, density, and
contrast values for each User Number assigned to this modality. The customer must be instructed that
the way they change from one format to another is by entering the user number on the keypad, of the
image capturing device, that corresponds to the format desired.
The DiskReader will read the User Number from the disk and apply the parameters found in the
DiskReader Configuration table for that User Number.
9. The procedures in Section 3-10 must be repeated for every modality that will be generating images on
disk to be processed and printed by the DiskReader, with each modality being assigned its own User
Number(s).
10. When all modalities and user numbers have been set up, select Restart from the DiskReader_Config
menu. This will take the system out of Contrast Test mode and will allow the modified configuration
values to take effect.

3-11. DiskReader Configuration Backup

The DiskReader configuration parameters should be backed up for future use. This routine only backs up
the DiskReader parameters, because DiskReader 3MUDR psd was selected from the Select_Server menu.
The PSD parameters are backed up by selecting PrintServer 3MPS psd from the Select_Server menu and
progressing to the Print_Server_Config menu.
To back up the parameters of the entire system, the technician will need two floppy diskettes. The system
does not allow both the PSD and DiskReader parameters to be backed up to the same diskette.
1. From the AdminApp Main Menu, make the following selections:
Select Server Operation
Select DiskReader 3MUDR psd
Select Configuration
Select Backup Config Files to Floppy
2. Answer the following system prompts as shown:

Section 5 – Removal and Replacement Procedures

5-1. Removal and Replacement Procedures
This section contains procedures for the following items:
5-2. 32MB Memory Expansion Option
5-3. Loading DiskReader Application Software
5-4. Restoring the DiskReader Configuration
5-5. Peripheral Device Replacement and Setup

5-2. 32MB Memory Expansion Option (Installation and Removal)

The 32MB Memory Expansion is an option offered to the customer to enhance system performance. The
procedures in this section describe how to install and remove the memory. If the SUN SPARC is replaced
due to hardware failure, remember to transfer the expansion memory from the failed SUN SPARC to the
replacement SUN SPARC.
1. Power off the SUN SPARC and disconnect cables as necessary to position the unit for servicing.
2. Remove the two screws that secure the SUN SPARC top cover.
3. Swing the top cover up and over for removal.

Figure 5-1. SUN SPARC Top Cover Removal

4. Use a ground strap to ground yourself to the inside frame of the SUN SPARC.
5. Locate the next available slot in the memory bus. Memory is installed in the bus starting at the rear
(connector side of the computer) and progressing toward the front.
6. Expand the two plastic retainers to allow insertion of the expansion memory SIMM. See Figure 5-2 for
memory bus location.

7. Due to the layout of the memory bus and the notches on the SIMM, the memory can only be installed
one way. Be sure to seat the memory until the plastic retainers come in from the sides, allowing the
memory SIMM to be locked in place.
8. Remove the ground strap.
9. Place the cover back on the frame hinges and swing the cover shut as shown in Figure 5-3.

Figure 5-3. Cover Replacement

10. Secure the cover to the frame using the two screws.
11. Reconnect the cables, power up SUN SPARC, and test for proper system operation.
12. The procedure for removal is the reverse of this procedure. Note that expanding the plastic retainers
releases the memory SIMM and raises it out of the memory bus.

5-3. Loading DiskReader Application Software

If the PSD was ordered with the DiskReader Option, then the application software was preloaded at the
factory. If the software becomes corrupted, or if the PSD is replaced with a unit from spare parts, or if the
DiskReader Option is being added to an existing PSD, then the DiskReader application software must be
loaded. The application software comes packaged with the DiskReader User Guide and is labeled as
DiskReader Application Software.

Note
For a DiskReader software upgrade (i.e., going from an older to a new version number), it is not
necessary to reload the Operating System, OS Patch, or PSD application software. The only
preloaded verification step that is applicable for an upgrade is to ensure a PSD Configuration backup
floppy has been created.

5-3-1. Preload Verification

Before proceeding with the DiskReader application software loading procedures, verify the following:
The Operating System, OS Patch and PSD Application software are loaded.
The SCSI peripheral devices (i.e., external drives and color printer) are powered on and were intialized
according to the procedures in Section 3-7 of this addendum.
Network configuration is properly set up.
– If this is a combination DiskReader and Network PSD then all of the steps in Section 6-5 of the PSD
Service Manual were performed as indicated.
– If this is a standalone DiskReader then the steps in Section 6-5 of the PSD Service Manual were
completed with an answer of NO to the “Connected to the Network?” question.
The PSD has been configured for this account. (See Sections 3-5 and 3-7 in the PSD Service Manual.)
If this is a combination DiskReader and Network PSD, also perform the procedures in Section 3-9 of
the PSD Service Manual to achieve proper image quality when printing from the network modalities.
A PSD configuration backup floppy has been created. See Section 3-10 in the PSD Service Manual.

5-3-2. Loading Procedures

1. If not already done, connect the laptop to the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 in the PSD Service
Manual for connection information.
2. At the login: prompt, enter root
3. At the password: prompt, enter Stillwater
4. Load the Network Interface Products Application CD-ROM into the CD-ROM player and close the
drawer.
5. Wait approximately 10 seconds for the CD-ROM drive to become ready, then type the following at the #
prompt:
ls /cdrom/cdrom0
Among others, the following files should be present:
adminApp.tar.z dpm.tar.z ps_install.sh li3m.tar.z dcp.tar.z
dskrdr.tar.z udr.tar.z udr_install.sh

Main menu.
9. Disconnect the laptop as described in Section 6-2 of the PSD Service Manual.

5-5. Peripheral Device Replacement and Setup

Physical replacement of the peripheral is simply a matter of powering down the device, disconnecting all
cables, swapping the defective device with the replacement, and reconnecting the cables. After installing
the replacement peripheral, perform the following setup procedures:
1. If the replacement device is identical to the original, set the configuration switches (SCSI ID, etc.) to
match the device being replaced. If replacing unlike devices (i.e., a Sony MO drive with a Deltis MO
drive) or if this is a newly added peripheral, refer to these switch configurations:

Deltis PowerMO 230 Magneto-Optical Disk Subsystem (Olympus MOS320E Disk Drive)
There are two switches to be configured on the Deltis assembly. The first switch is a push-button for
setting the SCSI ID. Press the push-button until the desired SCSI ID appears in the window.
The second switch determines whether or not this device will terminate the SCSI bus. If this is the last
device on the SCSI chain, place the termination switch in the on position, otherwise leave it in the off
position. (This switch takes the place of an external termination plug.)
 IOMEGA Bernoulli Disk Drive
The only switch setting for the Bernoulli is to set the SCSI ID push-button switch. Press the push-button
located on the back of the drive assembly until the desired SCSI ID appears in the window.
Sony UP-D7000 and UP-D8800 Color Printer
The only switch setup for the Sony Color Printers is to set the SCSI ID position four dip switch located
on the back of the printer. Switch position 1 sets SCSI Termination to be internal or external, and switch
positions 2, 3, and 4 set the SCSI ID.
In the DiskReader configuration, the printer is SCSI ID 0 and uses external termination. Therefore, all
four switches will be set to the 0 (down) position.

Appendix A – Enabling Network Printing on a Standalone DiskReader
1999 Rev. B A-1

Appendix A – Enabling Network Printing on a Standalone DiskReader

A-1. Enabling Network Printing on a Standalone DiskReader
This appendix provides instructions on how to enable network printing capability on a standalone
DiskReader. The technician will need the Print Server for DICOM (PSD) Service manual to complete the
tasks identified below.
1. Connect the ethernet network cable as described in Section 3-4 of the PSD Service Manual.
2. Enable network access using the procedures described in Section 6-5 of the Service Manual and note
the following:
The sys-unconfig routine prompts the technician for the Hostname, IP address and and Netmask
values for the Print Server. The Hostname is psd (lower case). If the account insists that the
Hostname be something they want, contact Technical Support for procedural information on how to
configure the system for a Hostname other than psd.
The IP Address and Netmask values must be obtained from the Network Administrator at the
account.
Answer the questions as indicated in Table 6-1 of the PSD Service Manual.
3. The DICOM Modality technician will want to know the Application Entity (also known as AE Title) and
network Port Number for the Print Server. We use IMN_PrintServer as the AE Title and 1024 as the
Port Number. Note that the AE Title is exactly as shown (i.e., all one word with the IMN, P, and S
capitalized.
If the AE Title and/or Port Number is unacceptable to the DICOM Modality for some reason, then use
the procedures found in Section 3-5 of the PSD Service Manual. Specifically, refer to the DICOM Setup
step and Table 3-6.
4. Using the AdminApp Utility, perform the Contrast Test procedure as found in Section 3-9 of the PSD
Service manual for those modalities that do not fit the following:
If a DICOM Modality being configured to network print is one that is currently being handled by the
DiskReader using MO or Bernoulli disks, then the density and contrast values are already available by
searching the DiskReader configuration files using the AdminApp utility. Look at the User Number
settings that are defined for the disks coming from that modality and provide the density and contrast
values to the modality technician. The values will be incorporated into the DICOM messages that
precede the image transfers and the Print Server will apply those parameters to the images when they
are printed by the laser imager.
5. If any changes were made to the PSD Configuration parameters (see Section 3-5 of the PSD Service
Manual), a new PSD Configuration Backup floppy must be created. Use the PSD Configuration backup
floppy that was created during the initial installation of the DiskReader and the procedures found in
Section 3-10 of the PSD Service Manual. The PSD Configuration Backup floppy is the one being
updated, not the DiskReader Configuration Backup floppy.
