Section 1 – Introduction
1999 Rev. A 1-1
Introduction
5115–13C
Manual Host
Image acquisition and printing activity is initiated from the host. The AutoFilming Keypad touchscreen
menus can still be used for Laser Imager parameter changes, but all image acquisition buttons are
disabled.
Keypad
All Laser Imager setup and operation activity is controlled by the AutoFilming Keypad in stand-alone
mode. This means that all image acquisition, erasing and printing functions of the Laser Imager are
controlled by using the appropriate buttons on the AutoFilming Keypad. The only Host control that is
provided in the Keypad mode is a toggle button on the touchscreen Main Menu that will allow selecting
Host mode.

Automatic Host
All buttons of the AutoFilming Keypad are disabled except for the number of copies. The AutoFilming
Keypad touchscreen displays current status information only. All other interaction with the Laser Imager
comes from the host. This mode is used when the console is AutoFilming, QuickFilming or Batch Filming.
The AutoFilming Keypad powers up in the Manual Host mode. Toggling between Manual Host and
Keypad modes is accomplished when a touchscreen Main Menu button is pressed. Toggling between
Manual Host and Automatic Host modes is accomplished when a Host Console button is pressed.
AutoFilming Keypad
A. Touchscreen – Displays a variety of menu used for system configuration and operation. These
menus are described in detail on the following pages.
B. Print Button – Places a print request to print stored images. Normally films are printed sequentially
as print requests are received from any user. A high priority user can be programmed by the service
technician. This user will have next priority for printing films.
C. Store Buttons – Used to acquire and store images in specific positions for printing. LEDs above each
button indicate used and available storage locations.
D. Sequential Store Button – Used to acquire and store images in sequential order, starting in the top
row, and working from left to right in each row.
E. Erase Button – Used to enter the Erase Image mode, which allows for erasure of any or all stored
images.

Note
After the first image is stored in the selected format, the Format Menu button is cleared from the
screen. This button will not reappear until the stored images have been printed or all the images
have been erased. This enables the user to tell whether or not the currently stored images have
been printed, and prevents the user from attempting to change formats while in the process of
acquiring images.

A. Attention Message Area – Displays system status and error messages. The various messages are
listed in the Troubleshooting Table in Section 4.
B. Display Brightness Set Buttons – Used to set the keypad display brightness. The bar graph above
the set buttons provides a relative indication of the display brightness.

H. Color Blind Mode Button – Used to enable or disable the color blind mode. When set to ENABLE,
the red LEDs above the Store buttons (which indicate used storage locations) blink instead of staying
on constantly. This allows the red LEDs to be differentiated from the constant green LEDs (which
indicate available storage locations).

When in the Erase Image mode, the red LEDs blink regardless of whether the color blind feature is
enabled or disabled.

D. Format Select Buttons – Used to select the desired image format. The available formats include:
Up to 5 fixed formats. The touchscreen display shows only the formats that are available for each
Laser Imager model. For the P831 Laser Imager; 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 12:1 formats are
available.
A 35mm slides format. This format produces images that are slide size. The maximum number of
slides on one film for the P831 Laser Imager is 12. Since slide-size images are substantially
smaller than the images produced by a standard 12:1 format, the group of slide-size images is
surrounded by a wide clear or dark border.
Once a format has been selected, the Main Menu is redisplayed. The pattern of images that can
be placed on the film is indicated by constant green LEDs above the appropriate Store buttons.
Figure 2-7 shows the storage patterns of available P831 Laser Imager formats.

preference of the viewer.)
When set to SMOOTH, individual image pixels are interpolated to provide smoother pixel borders.
Refer to Figure 2-9.
When set to SHARP, individual image pixels are not interpolated or interpolated to provide sharp
pixel borders. Refer to Figure 2-9.
Note
SMOOTH and SHARP images can not be mixed on one film. All stored images will be printed as

D. Format Select Buttons – Used to select the desired image format. The available formats include:
Up to 9 fixed formats for M952/959/969 are supported in Keypad Mode. Up to 6 fixed formats are
supported in Manual Host Mode. The touchscreen display shows only the formats that are
available for each Laser Imager model. For the M952/959/969 Laser Imagers 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1,
9:1, 12:1, 15:1, 16:1, and 20:1 formats are available.
A 35mm slides format. This format produces images that are exactly slide size. Since slide-size
images are substantially smaller than the images produced by a standard 12:1 format, the group
of slide-size images is surrounded by a wide clear or dark border.
Note
When using the slides format, some detail is lost on larger images (e.g., 1024 X 1024) due to the
demagnification required to create the slide-size images. Smaller images (e.g., 512 X 512) are
reproduced with the greatest fidelity.
Once a format has been selected or the cancel button is pressed, the Main Menu is redisplayed.
The pattern of images that can be placed on the film is indicated by constant green LEDs above
the appropriate Store buttons. Figure 2-11 shows the storage patterns of available M952, M959,
and M969 formats supported in Keypad Mode.

values for SMOOTH or SHARP are set to suit the user at installation, and can be changed by service
personnel using built-in service set-up menus.

Imager is displayed, as shown in Figure 3-9.
Note
If an image has not been stored, a message is displayed indicating that an image must be acquired
before the contrast test can be selected.
The imager automatically prints the stored image, on a single sheet, using each of the 15 different
contrast settings.
The number that appears on the upper left of each image corresponds to the contrast setting used
for that image. A one pixel border is printed around the image which used the current contrast
setting. A box is also printed around the contrast setting for this image.
The current density and contrast settings and user I.D. information are printed at the top of the test
sheet.
If more than one image was acquired, the last image stored is the one printed for all settings on
the contrast test sheet.
