Introduction

Introducing the GE Sytec AutoFilming Keypad

The GE Sytec AutoFilming Keypad provides a keypad interface between a GE Sytec Host modality and a
Kodak Laser Imager. The AutoFilming Keypad performs a protocol translation function between the
GE/Sytec Host and the AutoFilming Keypad and a keypad function between the Laser Imager and the
AutoFilming Keypad.

5115–13C

Figure 1-1. GE Sytec AutoFilming Keypad

There are three modes of operation for the AutoFilming Keypad:

 Manual Host
 Keypad
 Automatic Host

Manual Host
Image acquisition and printing activity is initiated from the host. The AutoFilming Keypad touchscreen
menus can still be used for Laser Imager parameter changes, but all image acquisition buttons are
disabled.

Keypad
All Laser Imager setup and operation activity is controlled by the AutoFilming Keypad in stand-alone
mode. This means that all image acquisition, erasing and printing functions of the Laser Imager are
controlled by using the appropriate buttons on the AutoFilming Keypad. The only Host control that is
provided in the Keypad mode is a toggle button on the touchscreen Main Menu that will allow selecting
Host mode.

Section 1 – Introduction
1999 Rev. A 1-2

Automatic Host
All buttons of the AutoFilming Keypad are disabled except for the number of copies. The AutoFilming
Keypad touchscreen displays current status information only. All other interaction with the Laser Imager
comes from the host. This mode is used when the console is AutoFilming, QuickFilming or Batch Filming.
The AutoFilming Keypad powers up in the Manual Host mode. Toggling between Manual Host and
Keypad modes is accomplished when a touchscreen Main Menu button is pressed. Toggling between
Manual Host and Automatic Host modes is accomplished when a Host Console button is pressed.

Figure 2-1. Keypad Controls

A. Touchscreen – Displays a variety of menu used for system configuration and operation. These
menus are described in detail on the following pages.
B. Print Button – Places a print request to print stored images. Normally films are printed sequentially
as print requests are received from any user. A high priority user can be programmed by the service
technician. This user will have next priority for printing films.
C. Store Buttons – Used to acquire and store images in specific positions for printing. LEDs above each
button indicate used and available storage locations.
D. Sequential Store Button – Used to acquire and store images in sequential order, starting in the top
row, and working from left to right in each row.
E. Erase Button – Used to enter the Erase Image mode, which allows for erasure of any or all stored
images.

settings is from 1 through 99. If either button is held down, the count changes at a rate of
approximately once per second. This is the only active feature in the automatic host mode.
E. Format Menu Button – Used to access the Format Menu.

Note
After the first image is stored in the selected format, the Format Menu button is cleared from the
screen. This button will not reappear until the stored images have been printed or all the images
have been erased. This enables the user to tell whether or not the currently stored images have
been printed, and prevents the user from attempting to change formats while in the process of
acquiring images.

F. Auto Format Button – Used to set the auto format function ON or OFF. When set to ON, a new
format is automatically displayed (i.e., the lights above the Store buttons change from red to green)
after images are printed. The images on the printed film are deleted from memory. When set to OFF,
the stored images stay in memory until a new format is selected or the images are erased using the

Up to 5 fixed formats. The touchscreen display shows only the formats that are available for each
Laser Imager model. For the P831 Laser Imager; 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 12:1 formats are
available.
A 35mm slides format. This format produces images that are slide size. The maximum number of
slides on one film for the P831 Laser Imager is 12. Since slide-size images are substantially
smaller than the images produced by a standard 12:1 format, the group of slide-size images is
surrounded by a wide clear or dark border.
Once a format has been selected, the Main Menu is redisplayed. The pattern of images that can
be placed on the film is indicated by constant green LEDs above the appropriate Store buttons.

D. Format Select Buttons – Used to select the desired image format. The available formats include:
Up to 9 fixed formats for M952/959/969 are supported in Keypad Mode. Up to 6 fixed formats are
supported in Manual Host Mode. The touchscreen display shows only the formats that are
available for each Laser Imager model. For the M952/959/969 Laser Imagers 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1,
9:1, 12:1, 15:1, 16:1, and 20:1 formats are available.
A 35mm slides format. This format produces images that are exactly slide size. Since slide-size
images are substantially smaller than the images produced by a standard 12:1 format, the group
of slide-size images is surrounded by a wide clear or dark border.

Note
When using the slides format, some detail is lost on larger images (e.g., 1024 X 1024) due to the
demagnification required to create the slide-size images. Smaller images (e.g., 512 X 512) are
reproduced with the greatest fidelity.

Once a format has been selected or the cancel button is pressed, the Main Menu is redisplayed.
The pattern of images that can be placed on the film is indicated by constant green LEDs above
the appropriate Store buttons. Figure 2-11 shows the storage patterns of available M952, M959,

Figure 3-14. HPT Store Buttons

Before pressing a Store button (B) or (C):

– The image as viewed on the monitor must be stable (not changing).
– The image data must be processed to the desired viewing level.
A constant green LED above a Store button means that an image can be stored at that position.
(No light means that the image position is not used in the format selected.)
A blinking orange LED after pressing a Store button means that an image is being transferred to
that position.
A constant red LED indicates that an image is stored at that position. (In Color Blind Mode, a
blinking red LED indicates that an image is stored at that position.)

Note
After the first image is stored, the Format Menu and Mode buttons are cleared from the Main Menu
screen. These buttons will not reappear until the stored images have been printed or all the images
have been erased. This enables the user to tell whether or not the currently stored images have
been printed, and prevents the user from attempting to change formats while in the process of
acquiring images.

the Main Menu, press the Copy Count Set buttons (A) to increment (up arrow) or decrement (down
arrow) the copy count as required. Refer to Figure 3-15. The range of possible settings is 1 through
99. If either button is held down, the copy count changes at a rate of about one per second.

Note
If the auto print function is ON, images are automatically printed as soon as the last image is stored.
In this case, set the copy count before acquiring the last image.

be acquired.
If the auto format function is OFF, new images cannot be acquired until a new format has been
selected or the currently stored images are erased using the Erase Image function.

To initiate Automatic Host operation, press the Auto button on the Host Console. In Automatic Host
operation, all buttons of the AutoFilming Keypad are disabled except for the number of copies. The
keypad touchscreen displays current status information only. All desired Laser Imager settings must be
selected in Manual Host Mode before toggling to Automatic Host Mode. All other interaction with the
Laser Imager comes from the host. In Automatic Host operation, the Main Menu appears as shown in
Figure 3-20.
The desired format must be selected in Manual Host or Keypad Mode. A non-valid format selected in
Keypad Mode will default to the last valid Host Mode format. Images acquired in Manual Host Mode will
