1. How the lubrication system works?

The engine lubrication system is a system that is responsible for distributing oil to all
moving parts within the engine in order to reduce friction between surfaces.

Less fuel is used, and the engine is kept at a lower temperature as it provides a cooling
1
effect.

What is the function of a lubrication system?

The lubrication system allows the creation of an oil film on each of the engine parts to
prevent excessive wear. In this way, the useful life of the engine is lengthened, and
breakdowns related to this wear are prevented.

2. Types of lubricating oils

There are three varieties of oils, the most common is mineral (which comes from oil),
then synthetic (which is developed in laboratories) and semi-synthetic (with mineral base
and synthetic additives). The first is the one with the most viscosity and the other two
tend to flow faster.

Motor oil can be classified into four basic categories:

synthetic, semi-synthetic, high mileage and conventional oil.

REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

The systems used to cool the engines are liquid and mixed air cooling.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM

The main element of the lubrication system is obviously the lubricant, which is more
commonly known as motor oil.

This is stored in the lower part of the engine, either in a kind of bucket known as a
crankcase or sump, or in a drain tank, also located under the engine. The lubricant is
extracted from this tank through the oil pump, first passing through a strainer, which
prevents the passage of the larger particles deposited at the bottom of the tank, towards
the rest of the system.

Lubrication system and its function

Now that we know what it is and how it works, we are clear that the main function of
the lubrication system is to reduce and / or avoid as much as possible direct contact
between the different surfaces and elements that make up the motor, in addition to
dissipating the heat produced. by the continuous movement of the moving parts of the
same

Splash lubrication system

In this system, a pump is in charge of taking the oil from the crankcase to some tanks
or crevices, maintaining a pre-established level.

Drip lubrication system

The oil is extracted by pump and distributed through pipes to the areas to be lubricated.
Once there, the oil is dropped in the form of drops or a jet on top of the elements to be
lubricated.

Dry sump lubrication system

In this system, it is assumed that the vehicle will be driven under conditions of
maximum demand, especially to compete.

Pressure lubrication system

This is the most common system in utility vehicles. The oil is driven by the pump to
almost all the elements, to which it reaches through the pipes, with the exception of
the small end, which is lubricated using the rings, which drag the oil along the cylinder
walls and prevent the oil go to the top of the piston

Splash lubrication system

In this system, no longer in use, the oil is collected from the crankcase by a kind of
spoons located on the connecting rod heads, taking advantage of their rotation to
lubricate the connecting rod-crankshaft bearings. The constant twisting motion allows
oil to splash into the crankcase, allowing it to reach almost any corner.

Lubrication systems in gasoline engines

The lubrication systems in gasoline engines can be the same as in diesel engines in
terms of the way they distribute it through the circuit, but, of course, the use of the
same type of oil in diesel engines as gasoline engines is not recommended. .

In gasoline engines, the level of "ashes" or Low saps contained in the engine oil is not
so important, since it supports more aggressive additives and usually does not require
special attention in terms of gas recirculation systems and anti -pollution.

Gravity lubrication system

This system operates using the principle of gravity feed. A supply reservoir is used to
supply the lubricant through sloped tubes to the area to be lubricated. Gravity feed
lubrication methods use drip feed,

Diesel engine lubrication systems

For diesel engines, the use of low-ash oils, with less aggressive additives, that are
more respectful with the environment, and that extend the useful life of the oil filter are
recommended, which is achieved thanks to the fact that their polluting particles are
dissolved. more easily. On the other hand, diesel engine oils have a higher anti-wear
load, in order to take care of the catalysts of this type of engine.

Lubrication systems in gasoline engines

The lubrication systems in gasoline engines can be the same as in diesel engines in
terms of the way they distribute it through the circuit, but, of course, the use of the
same type of oil in diesel engines as gasoline engines is not recommended.

Consequences of using the wrong lubricant

Using an oil not recommended for the vehicle's engine type can cause a series of
breakdowns in the engine and its elements, which will present symptoms such as:

30% reduction in the effectiveness and useful life of the FAP

Higher fuel consumption

Noticeable loss of power
