How the lubrication system works?

The job of the lubrication system is to distribute oil to the moving parts to
reduce friction between surfaces which rub against each other.
The lubrication system used by the Wright brothers is quite simple. An oil
pump is located on the bottom of the engine, at the left of the figure. The
pump is driven by a worm gear off the main exhaust valve cam shaft. The oil
is pumped to the top of the engine, at the right, inside a feed line. Small
holes in the feed line allow the oil to drip inside the crankcase. In the figure,
we have removed the fuel system and peeled back the covering of the
crankcase to see inside. The oil drips onto the pistons as they move in the
cylinders, lubricating the surface between the piston and cylinder. The oil
then runs down inside the crankcase to the main bearings holding the
crankshaft. Oil is picked up and splashed onto the bearings to lubricate these
surfaces. Along the outside of the bottom of the crankcase is a collection
tube which gathers up the used oil and returns it to the oil pump to be
circulated again. Notice that the brothers did not lubricate the valves and
rocker assem

Types of lubricating oils

Motor oil can be classified into four basic categories: synthetic, semi-
synthetic, high-mileage, and conventional oil.

• Synthetic motor oil

Synthetic motor oil is the result of a chemical engineering process. Synthetic
oil molecules are more uniform in shape and contain fewer impurities than
conventional oil molecules. In general, synthetic oil performs better in
extremely high or low temperatures. Synthetic oils are generally formulated
with high performance additives.
• Semi-synthetic motor oil
Semi-synthetic motor oil incorporates a blend of synthetic and conventional
base oils to offer greater resistance to oxidation (compared to conventional
oil), as well as providing excellent low-temperature properties.

• High mileage motor oil

High mileage motor oil is specially designed for older vehicles or newer
vehicles with more than 120,000 kilometers. Thanks to its unrivaled formula
and unique additives, a high-mileage oil reduces oil burn and helps seal leaks
that can occur in older engines.

• Conventional motor oil

The formulation of conventional motor oils has a wide range of viscosity
grades and quality levels. Conventional motor oil is recommended for drivers
with cars with a simple engine and a regular driving style (compared to severe
driving conditions).
