Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

We now live in a world where almost everything is practically inseparable from

the Internet, including business. It is now crucial that every company – no matter what

sector it belongs to – has a recognizable online presence. Not only does modern

technology help hotels, tours, and activity operators be found online, but it also helps

them easily convert visits into money through an online reservation system.

Online reservation or reservation systems are increasing the present and future of

reservations for all kinds of businesses. Today, they are safer, easier, and cheaper than

ever for companies to run, and for customers, they’re an expectation if they’re visiting a

website. The Reservation system is an online-based system for the reservation of

attractions in a said business. This helps potential customers overview the specific

interests of a company.

Sarkar & Noel (2020), stated that the Ticket Reservation System is an Internet-

based application that can be accessed throughout the Net and can be accessed by anyone

who has a net connection. This application will reserve the tickets. This online ticket

reservation system provides a website for a cinema hall where any user of the Internet

can access it. People can book tickets online at any time of day or night. In addition, the

reservation system also provides an option to cancel the tickets which are reserved

previously.
2

As studied by Zulkifli (2020), reservation is times that are dedicated to things like

doctor visits, business matters, and far like a reservation. The recipient notification agent

receives the message notification on behalf of the recipient. Getting the system with

many free participants for behavior is a big challenge. Nowadays, people use computer

systems in their organization. The reason is to reduce human workload, and at the same

time, it will require fewer staff or employees to operate in various systems within the

organization. Organizations may need only one worker per system.

In addition, technology helps people to save time by using electronic systems

instead of manually recording data. For this reason, an online appointment system is built

in some organizations to make meetings and appointments more convenient. The online

appointment system is a paperless electronic application designed with high flexibility

and ease of use, implemented for organizations such as faculty, administration, hospitals,

clinics, and other business organizations to handle meetings with customers or customers

more effectively. There are many types of online appointment systems that exist today.

This system is usually built to avoid repeating the same time slot for different users.

Dinosaurs Island Ilocos was established in 2011 as a 100% Filipino-owned

corporation. They offer different attractions such as Dinosaurs Trail With World Of Fun,

7D Extreme Cinema, Happy Ride Train, The Orchard, and Dinosaur Adventure Ride.

Technology is absolutely necessary for computing and accounting for business

transactions and other documentation. It has transformed many aspects of life, including

how many people make reservations. This idea is used by the proponents to make a

Reservation System for Dinosaurs Island Ilocos. The park is only using manual
3

procedures for all their transactions, which may cause problems, especially during peak

seasons when the park is loaded with guests.

The developed system will serve as a replacement for their current manual

reservation process. The current reservation system is done by filling out a registration

form provided by the park, wherein the guest has to indicate some personal information

and data about the reservation.

This kind of system is expected to promote the park to more guests and make the

park’s system more accommodating for guests. All information that a guest about the

park will be available on their web page. User information is stored in a database to keep

track of the records of the users, including the reservations made. The assigned

administrator will have their access to the entire database to be able to update or change

their records. The proposed system will not only benefit the park’s customers/guests but

the park as well, for all of their data are organized and secured and will only be accessed

by the assigned administrator.

History

Dinosaurs Island Ilocos is the first animatronics theme park in Ilocos Region. It is

a sight-seeing place for everyone offering a make-believe feeling while traveling back in

Statement of Objectives

This study aimed to design and develop Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island

Ilocos. Specifically, it aimed to:

1. Determine the problems encountered in reserving ticket.

2. Develop the Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos Incremental

Method; and

3. Evaluate the system in terms of:

a. Functional Sustainability,

b. Performance Efficiency,

c. Usability, and

d. Security.

Significance of the Study

The reservation of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos provides a systematic and organized

management system for the Dinosaurs Island Ilocos in Bayubay Sur, San Vicente, Ilocos

Sur. The following are the stakeholders who would be benefited from the proposed

Reservation of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos:

Business Owners. This can help them do work more efficiently and give them its

accuracy.

Admin. The one who will administer or handles the system. Admin provides

strategies for the business that is fast and reliable. This can benefit the admin to focus on

improving the overall user experience and delivering increased value for the end-user.

Employees. This can benefit the employees by improving productivity, providing

maximum opportunities for the business, and efficiency in working performance.

8

Maintenance Team. This can help them ensure and update all the equipment

requirements and infrastructure keeps running for the organization.

Guest. They can view the attractions and offers of the park. They can also see the

picture of the interests and rates offer. It can lessen the time they spend processing and

transacting with the cashier.

Researchers. This research enabled the project team to design code and

implement a Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur,

which requires a knowledge website in software and system development. This also

enables them to test new technologies and enhance their skills as programmers or

developers.

Future Researchers. This output could help other researchers who wish to

conduct similar studies and gain insights into the Reservation system of Dinosaurs Island

Ilocos development and management. Other researchers could also find this study

technically relevant as this provides cues to baseline information on how to prepare for

similar studies in Information Technology.

Scope and Delimitation

The Dinosaurs Island Ilocos is still using manual reservation procedure in

keeping records of the guest and past, current and upcoming reservation. In making

reservation, guest fill-out a reservation form.

The reservation system can help the owner of the park in improving their current

system. It will only pay much attention on reservations of tickets of the said park. The
9

customization of the displayed attractions in the system is only available on the admin

page. The user and the admin needs a stable internet connection to access the said system.

The reservation system of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos is designed to cater, For Users

or Guest: Viewing of Attractions and sights that can be availed, Creating a user account

for users who will reserve tickets, and Reservation of tickets and selecting dates. For

Admin: Managing the reservations’ dates or schedules, Editing the features Attractions

and prices only done by the admin, Viewing of booked Attractions and dates, and

Creating account for other admin. However, the system cannot accept payments.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND METHODOLOGY

Related Literature

This chapter presents the related literature and studies that were carefully

scrutinized for further improvement of the study.

Lee (2017), emphasized that many amusement parks have been operated with

information and communications technologies to provide friendly and efficient Tourist

Attractions. However, these systems leave various levels of decisions for tourists to make

by themselves, which may incur pressure on tourists. To address this issue, we have

developed an SAP system with smart tour suggestions. However, this SAP system would

not be exhaustive without an attraction reservation scheme. Therefore, this paper

proposes an attraction reservation system as an extension to the SAP system. The

proposed system comprises three subsystems: The mobile app subsystem is an interface

for tourists to make reservations for attractions and stores the reservation tickets for later

verification. The central subsystem performs necessary computing and database

management. The ticket-scanning subsystem scans the tourist’s reservation ticket for

further verification. The demonstrations of the implemented prototyping system show

that the proposed system does function.

Murin, Jakab, & Michalko (2022), explained that the reservation system was

carried out in the form of a web application, which considered the findings from the

analysis of available solutions. The created reservation system consists of two parts, such

as the reservation from the administration panel. The admin panel provides numerous

features, such as managing reservations, services, calendars, creating forms, statistics, etc.
11

At the same time, the system automates several processes, such as publishing

events and services on a web page or displaying reservations. Other automated

transactions include document generation, data export, or automatic emailing. When

developing the booking form for reservation, some of the importance was mainly on

simplicity, user-friendliness, and at the same time providing several functionalities. The

development of the application is also considered a security.

Adam (2019), in his study Online Bus Ticket Reservation System, discusses

customers purchase bus tickets online and increase the company’s efficiency. In the

current system, tickets are manually purchased over the counter in bus terminals, and it is

not automated. Some problems can be encountered, such as wasting of time and money

cost to purchase a bus ticket, managing or preparing ticket sell reports, and common

ticket frauds. The Online Bus Ticket Reservation System has solutions for the problems

mentioned above. The System enables the company to manage its ticket-related

operations more efficiently and productively. The System also allows customers to see

the availability of bus tickets, buy bus tickets and pay for bus tickets online through a

prepaid card based on the passenger’s sources and destination. This makes the customers

uncomplicated and effortless to get bus tickets online instead of queueing up to purchase

the bus ticket.

Lagman D. (2018), highlighted that the Lan-Based Reservation System for

Hacienda Gracia Resort and Hotel is a resort that is utilized for leisure or recreation and

where people are drawn to spend their holiday or vacation. It refers to locations,

communities, or commercial entities run by a single business.

12

On the other hand, a hotel is defined as a business that provides paid lodging on a

short-term basis. Because some hotels and resorts are becoming totally automated while

others are still striving for a comparable environment, computer programmers are

constantly building a system applications to better serve resort or hotel visitors.

The researchers present a "LAN-Based Reservation with Billing System for

Hacienda Gracia Resort and Hotel to enhance its reservation and billing system." The

introduction of modern technologies enabled simple and trouble-free contact between and

among humans. This is why most hotels and resorts choose to use computerization in

their operations. As a result, their system is a LAN-based system, so we generated an

online system for some to organize. The established system appears to be more appealing,

efficient, and dynamic.

Hashim (2015), stated that booking medical appointments is an important task in

ensuring efficient health care services. With a rising number of patients, systematic

appointment scheduling is essential to offer patients correct and timely medical care.

Making appointments is time-consuming since it requires patients to go to the hospital,

increasing expense and effort. The appointment booking system may be accessed over

the Internet to address this issue. Appointment booking via an internet-based booking

system may be done from anywhere and at any time without going to the hospital, saving

time and money.

In addition, this study creates a revolutionary online appointment booking system

for Iraq's Al-Kindi Hospital. The system includes a data analysis tool that was created

using the clustering approach. The program was evaluated using real-world data from a
13

public hospital, demonstrating that patients may be correctly categorized based on

medical information gathered through the online appointment booking system.

ONLINE TRANSPORT RESERVATION SYSTEM

Badariah (2015), emphasized that the Online Transport reservation system,

developed at Politeknik Kota Kuala Terengganu (PKKT), was designed to ensure that

consumers make online reservations or reservations to their preferred transport firms

using the new system's facilities. He stated that the methods and techniques employed in

this new transportation system might be applied to other activities. Before boarding, the

user must make an application to book the vehicle. Similarly, after considering the type

of system used by Badariah, this project will be designed with the same goal of providing

Imo Transport Company customers with the ability to make reservations in the comfort

of their homes or offices without having to face the challenges of queuing at counters

before embarking on any journey. This initiative will also educate prospective clients and

users on the importance of using the system. It outperforms the existing system by giving

an easy-to-use Graphic User Interface (GUI) interaction, checking route availability

before boarding, etc.

Pangadlin & Balantucas (2012), discussed that the researchers have decided to

apply the benefits of the internet in our local business establishments. This is to improve

the quality of their services to their clients and customers. One of these establishments is

the Gazebo Pools and Restaurant. Though their management is almost perfect, the

researchers have found something is lacking in their establishment, especially in the

reservation system. The clients and customers may find it a bit hassle. The customers

might get hassled by being handed over a rent form for the payment of the rooms and
14

facilities that are to be rented. We have also found that we can improve that system by

making it online. The online reservation system provides more hassle-free transactions

and saves time and effort. And the best part is, the customers can have their reservations

wherever they may be.

According to Teodoro, Valentin, & Bote (2015), the system is an Online

Reservation that helps the client to request reservations easier with the help of the internet.

In the system, the client should expect one process; Resort Reservation. The clients can

easily reserve dates. The project team hopes that the system will help the busy people

who need assistance in their business. The project team made an “Online Reservation

System” program for Klir Waterpark Resort located at Sta. Rita, Bulacan. It saves users

time in doing manual transactions. In this generation, most businesses use computer

systems because it helps them perform a task faster.

Olaño, Agcaoili, Canlas, Narbasa, & Ordillas (2018), explained that Web Based

Hotel Reservation is a type of system where you can reserve a hotel by going to the exact

location at the hotel. You can also see whether a room is available, so this way is much

faster, convenient, and they can save so much time to reserve a room or more.

Web-Based Hotel Reservation systems can be used to serve as more reliable and

speed up the process of Recording and Estimating the total cost of a customer's reserve

room. They save you the burden of learning and understanding the complex reservation

and billing process. This study is to show the advantages and disadvantages that have in

the Web-Based Hotel Reservation System. Reservation software completes Estimating

the total cost of a customer's reserve room it would take to do them manually, while your

reservation staff might not like it.

15

Genon (2014), stated that the study will focus on the effects of manual

reservations and how they will be replaced with electronic reservations. As a result, the

proponents claimed to have discovered how to increase the number of customers by

employing computerized reservations. Individual stimulation and interaction have always

been tied to the technical availability of the time and place. Computers and transactions

have evolved from manual transactions as a result of the move to an information-based

society.

In addition, one of the solutions or alternatives to the challenges that a hotel is

facing is the development of a system that can edit, delete, filter, monitor, and keep and

safeguard customer records. The Hotel Reservation system is a transaction processing

system that resolves the issue encountered during manual Hotel reservations. The

computerized Hotel Reservation System seeks to make manual Hotel Reservations more

efficient and precise. The database is shared over the Local Area Network (LAN). To

create the project, the supporters employ a number of tools and strategies. The system

employs a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to assist the user in providing instructions to

the computer. Once built, the system will tackle the most prevalent challenges

encountered by Hotel Reservation.

16

Incremental Software Process

Incremental SDLC is developed in response to the weaknesses of the waterfall

model. It is a component-based software (CBS) development, model. Incremental

development is a scheduling and staging method in which distinct portions of the system

are created at different times or rates and then merged as they are finished. The

incremental development life cycle model supports the reusability of software

components (Kumar, Rishi, & Rajkumar, 2016).

Furthermore, multiple development cycles take place here, making the life cycle a

“multi-waterfall” cycle. The cycles are divided up into smaller, more easily managed

iterations. Each iteration passes through the requirements, design, implementation, and

testing phases. The incremental model divides the product into builds, where sections of

the project are created and tested separately. This approach will likely find errors in user

requirements quickly since user feedback is solicited for each stage and because code is

tested sooner after it is written (Singh, Thakur, & Chaudhary, 2015)

Software Acceptability Test

ISO 25010 Software Quality Model has eight quality characteristics. These are the

Functional Suitability, Performance Efficiency, Compatibility, Usability, Reliability,

Security, Maintainability, and Portability. In Functional Suitability, the following are

being checked: functional completeness, functional correctness, and functional

appropriateness. While in Performance Efficiency, time behavior, resource utilization,

and capacity are being tested. Co-existence and interoperability under the Compatibility.

To test Usability, the following must be evaluated: appropriateness, learnability,

17

operability, user error protection, user interface aesthetics, and accessibility. Furthermore,

Reliability, maturity, availability, fault tolerance, and recoverability are being tested. In

Security, confidentiality, integrity, non-repudiation, authenticity, and accountability are

assessed. Under Maintainability, modularity, reusability, analyzability, modifiability and

testability are evaluated. And to check the Portability, adaptability, installability, and

replaceability are taken into account (ISO 2500, n.d.).

Operational Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined for further understanding of the study:

Reservation. This refers an act of reserving an accommodation, a ticket in advance.

Guest. It refers to people who will make a reservation of ticket.

Attraction. Any activity or benefit that are being an offer to another that is

essentially intangible and does not result in the ownership of anything.

Ticket. This refers to the document or electronic record, issued by the company

that confirms that an individual is entitled to enter on the park.

Quantity. The amount or number of a material or immaterial thing.

Performance Efficiency. It is the capability of the system to operate without

consuming much resources.

Functional sustainability . It is refers to the capability of the system to maintains

the performance level.

Security. This refers to the capability of the system to prevent unauthorized

access.
18

Usability. This refer to the effectiveness of the system and how easy it is for the

user.

Web-based. This refers to an application that runs inside a browser using Internet.

PHP . (acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is an open source general-

purpose scripting language that is suited for web development and can be embedded into

HTML.

SQL. (pronounced "es-que-el") stands for Structured Query Language is used to

communicate with a database.

Methodology

The researchers have followed the descriptive and developmental research

designs in the course of this study.

Status of the Current System

The researchers have followed the descriptive type of research in identifying the

current system's status. According to Ethridge (as cited in Research Methodology, 2019),

Descriptive studies simply try and determine, describe, or identify what is, whereas

analytical studies try to figure out why it is that way or how it came to be.

Furthermore, the researchers used interview methods. An interview is typically a

face-to-face conversation between a researcher and a participant involving a transfer of

information to the interviewer (Cresswell, 2012). One of the researchers visited the park

to meet with the manager to set a virtual meeting with the whole group. The researchers

had an initial interview with the Park Manager virtually thru Google meet. The Park

managers were the best choices for the interview as they are the ones who oversee the

processes and manage the operations of their park.

19

The responses from the interview were summarized to come up with a narrative

report on the current status of the Amusement Park of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos.

Development of Reservation System

The researchers followed the developmental research design in developing

a reservation system of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos. Developmental design has been defined

as the systematic study of designing, developing, and evaluating products that must meet

internal consistency and effectiveness standards. It involves the analysis, description, and

evaluation of the final product (Richey, n.d.)

Specifically, the Incremental approach is a method of software development

where the model is designed, implemented, and tested incrementally (a little more is

added each time) until the product is finished. It involves both development and

maintenance. The product is defined as finished when it satisfies all of its requirements.

An incremental model is an intuitive approach to the waterfall model (Singh, Thakur, &

Chaudhary, 2015). The software model for Incremental is presented in Figure 3.

Figure 3
Incremental Model Software Process
20

Requirement analysis: The product analysis expertise identifies the requirements

in the first phase of the incremental model. And the system's functional requirements are

understood by the requirement analysis team. Developing the software under the

incremental model, this phase performs a crucial role.

Design & Development: The design of the system functionality and the

development approach is completed successfully during this phase of the SDLC

Incremental model. The incremental model employs the style and development phase

when new functionality is added to the software.

Testing: The testing phase of the incremental model evaluates the performance of

each current function and any new functionality. Various methods are employed in the

testing process to test the behavior of each task.

Implementation: The implementation phase enables the coding phase of the

development system. It involves the final coding that is designed in the designing and

development phase and tests the functionality in the testing phase. After completing this

phase, the number of the products working is enhanced and upgraded up to the final

system product.

The researchers determined and modeled using Use Case Diagram and Activity

Diagram.

Use Case Diagram is a modeling tool that describes what a system does without a

detailed explanation. It reflects the view of a system from the perspective of a user

outside the system, which is the user requirement (Kendall & Kendall, 2014). In other

words, a use case specifies "who" and "what" can be done with the system in the issue.
21

The use case approach is used to capture the behavioral needs of a system by defining

scenario-driven threads through the functional requirements.

The Activity Diagram depicts the sequence of activities in a process. An Activity

Diagram is created per use case and may show different possible scenarios.

The researchers have also finished modeling the system’s database using Entity-

Relationship Diagram (ERD) in Unified Modeling Language (UML), which according to

Kendall & Kendall (2013), was used to organize data collected into entities and to define

the relationship between entities. An ERD is a significant data modeling tool frequently

used by analysts who need to produce a good database structure.

The researchers constructed the system’s data structure with sample records and

the data dictionary.

Data Dictionary is a kind of specialized dictionary used for references. Data

Dictionary is metadata that a system analyst compiles to guide them through analysis and

design. It is a compilation of specific data terms, and it gives meaning to different people

in the organization (Kendall & Kendall, 2014).

Additionally, the researchers constructed the Hierarchical Input-Process-Output, a

graphical representation of the program’s control structure, and a set of Input-Process-

Output charts performed by modules on the hierarchy charts (Rodney, 2012).

22

Evaluation of Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos

The researchers followed the descriptive research design in determining the

software acceptability of the developed system. They used the survey method, which

according to Juneja (n.d), is a technique for gathering data using a prepared questionnaire

that will be answered by people who thought to have the desired information. It is also an

effective way to produce information on people’s characteristics, opinions, and attitudes.

The researchers used the ISO/IEC 25010 software quality evaluation metric by

adapting it for the survey questionnaire. Quality is defined as the extent to which a

system meets the expectations and needs of its clients. The client’s needs are what is

presented in the quality model, which categorizes the quality into characteristics and sub-

characteristics (ISO 2500, n.d.). As to the ISO/IEC 25010, the researchers have chosen

four of its characteristics, namely, Functional Suitability, Performance Efficiency,

Usability, and Security, to determine the level of acceptability of the developed system.

Functional Suitability refers to the appropriateness of the function of the

software. Performance Efficiency is concerned with the system's resources when used for

providing the desired functionality. This feature type is defined by the amount of disk

space, memory, and network. Usability is the software's ability to be easily operated by a

given user in a given environment. Security is the prevention of accidental or deliberated

unauthorized access to system functionality.

The respondents of the survey evaluation questionnaire include the end-users,

which are the panel of examiners. After the evaluation, the results were summarized and

interpreted by getting the mean average.

23

The results were based on the norms presented in Table 1.

Table 1
Likert Scale for the Level of Acceptability Results Interpretation

Point Rating Descriptive Equivalent Rating Descriptive Interpretation

5 4.50-5.00 Excellent Very Highly Acceptable
4 3.50-4.49 Very Good Highly Acceptable
3 2.50-3.49 Good Acceptable
2 1.50-2.49 Fair Fairly Acceptable
1 1.00-1.49 Poor Not Acceptable

The mean average of responses ranging from 4.50 to 5.00 implies that the

quality of the system is Excellent. This can also be interpreted as Very Highly Acceptable.

The rating ranging from 3.50 to 4.49 is Very Good, and is interpreted as Highly

Acceptable. It is Good when the rating range is from 2.50 to 3.49, and is interpreted as

Acceptable. When the rating is 1.50 to 2.49, it is Fair and has a descriptive interpretation

of Fairy Acceptable. And a rating from 1.00 to 1.49, the quality is Poor, and is seen as

Not Acceptable.
Chapter III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Status of the Current System

Based from the conducted interview, the researchers have summarized the current

status of the Dinosaurs Island Ilocos.

Management of reservation

Upon entering Dinosaurs Island Ilocos, the guests shall proceed to the officer-in-

charge, if they are numerous entering the Dinosaurs Island Ilocos, and manually collect

the numbers of adults and how many three (3) feet below their group. And if the group of

guests is not quite numerous, they are not required to reserve their tickets. They can

immediately walk in. After collecting and counting, the staff asks the guests what

attraction they want to go to. It can also make reservations through email and contact

through the Facebook account of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos.

The Developed Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos

The developed Reservation System of Dinosaurs Island Ilocos was modeled using

different software modeling tools. The Use Case Diagram of the system is illustrated in

Figure 4. To further elaborate the Use Case Diagram, the researchers elaborated the Use

Cases to Activity Diagrams presented in Figure 5.a to 5.g. The researchers presented the

system’s Entity Relationship Diagram in Figure 6. The researchers displayed the Data

Structure with Sample Records in page 32. The Data Dictionary is located in page 36 and

lastly, the Hierarchical Input-Process-Output in page 38.
