CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter consists of introduction, background of the study, conceptual framework,

objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitations of the study

and the definition of terms.

Background of the Study

A staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic waste are generated in the Philippines each

year, and an estimated 20 percent ends up in the ocean. Plastics pollution has an

economic impact such like damage to fisheries, shipping, and tourism. So, we have an

idea to reduce plastic pollution to a country.

A plastic granulated machine is a mechanical device for the grinding of many

different types of plastic materials to reduce plastic wastes. Plastic granulated

machine can easily grind Large and small plastic bottles, Plastic bottle caps, plastic

bags and other plastic materials grinding processing. Plastic granulated machine can

help to community in terms of plastic pollutions. If there is chance that a plastic can

be used again or it can be recycled again maybe we can pulverize it so we can use and

recycle like plastic chairs, plastic tables and other materials made from plastics.

Plastic granulated machine is state of the art devices used to reduce the size of

materials in a wide range of recycling applications. This research project can be big
2

help to our environment in terms of plastic it can be lessened the plastic around us if

we can pulverize it and maybe we can be a great to help to people but also in our

society, environment and surroundings. There are tons of plastic that easily be broken

and it cannot be used again so instead other people throw it or maybe sell it to

junkshop there are plastic that can be recycled and there are not what happens if it’s

not so the goal of this research is to lessened the plastic or heavy plastic in our

environment and society.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Durability

Diop (2013) Blending ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)

with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) via conventional processing methods is

challenging; as a result of the vast viscosity mismatch between UHMWPE and

HDPE, blends prepared via melt processing contain UHMWPE agglomerates

dispersed in HDPE. We demonstrate the utility of solid-state shear pulverization to

effectively blend 20 wt% UHMWPE with HDPE. Using rheology, differential

scanning calorimetry, and tensile testing we studied the effect of UHMWPE

composition on blend properties.

Guo (2010) A new kind of plastic composite (WPC) was produced by

compounding nonmetal from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), recycled high-

density polyethylene (HDPE), wood flour and other additives. The blended granules

were then extruded to profile WPC products by a conical counter-rotating twin-screw

extruder. The results showed that the addition of nonmetals in WPC improved

the flexural and tensile strength and reduced screw withdrawal strength. When the

added content of nonmetals was 40%, the flexural strength of WPC was 23.4 MPa,

tensile strength was 9.6 MPa, impact strength was3.03 J/m2 and screw withdrawal

strength was 1755 N. Dimensional stability and Fourier transform infrared

spectroscopy (FTIR) of WPC panels were also investigated. Furthermore, thermo

7

gravimetric analysis showed that thermal degradation of WPC mainly included two

steps. The first step was the decomposition of wood flour and nonmetals from 260 to

380 °C, and the second step was the decomposition of HDPE from 440 to 500 °C. The

performance and thermal behavior of WPC produced by nonmetals from PCBs

achieves the standard of WPC. It offers a novel method to treat nonmetals from PCBs.

Fang (2021) Because of its low electrochemical potential and large theoretical

capacity, silicon is regarded as a promising candidate material for next-generation

lithium-ion batteries. However, commercialization has been hampered by the poor

cycling problem, which is linked with large volume fluctuations (380 percent) during

delithiation. As an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer for Si anodes, an

organic–inorganic hybrid film of titanic one through molecular layer deposition

(MLD) is presented here. This rigid-soft titanic one coating with a Young's modulus

of 21 GPa may effectively reduce stress concentration during the lithiation process,

ensuring the mechanical structure of a Si nanoparticles (NPs)@titanicone electrode's

stability. The optimized Si NPs@70 cycle titanicone anode has a high Li+ diffusion

coefficient and a low Li+ diffusion barrier due to the long-strand (Ti–O–benzene–O–

Ti) unit design.

Kaya (2019) The chapter explains the aim and importance of size reduction in

e-waste recycling. Shredding, crushing, and grinding are general comminution

methods used in WPCB recycling. Industrial-size shredders, which are hammer mill

are covered in detail. Emerging fractionation and electrodynamic fragmentation with

high-voltage pulse technologies are introduced for WPCB recycling. Industrial plant

application flow sheets are demonstrated. Industrial-scale material classification

8

methods and equipment are presented. Plant-scale conveyor belts for material

transport between equipment and working principles of filtration and dust collection

systems for high filtration efficiency are also covered in this chapter.

Krishnan A, (2014) Eggshell (ES), a byproduct of food processing and

hatcheries, contains 95% calcium carbonate (CC), making it a potentially appealing

and less expensive option for commercial CC. Previously, complicated grinding–

sieving and/orchemical modification procedures were utilized to help in the dispersion

of ES in polymers such as polypropylene (PP). Both methods increase the cost of the

composite while decreasing its greenness. Green composite materials of PP with 5–40

wt percent unaltered ES shards of several centimeters in size are produced directly

here employing continuous, single-step solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP).

Electron microscopy and particle size analyses demonstrate that the composite has

extremely excellent dispersion, with some ES particles reaching the nanoscale. With a

5–7% increase in PP crystallinity, well-dispersed ES particles considerably boost PP

crystallization rates. The excellent the very good dispersion leads to a major increase

in young’s modulus (87% increase relative to neat PP for 40 wt% ES) and a modest

increase in hardness; composites exhibit reductions in yield strength, elongation at

break, and impact properties. Mechanical and crystallization properties are equal to or

better than the best literature data for PP/ES composites without chemical

modification made by multi-step approaches involving melt processing. In addition,

the composites exhibit high thermal degradation temperatures compared to neat PP,

indicating the potential for ES to improve processing stability. Composites with 20–

40 wt% ES exhibit solid-like rheological response with no crossover of shear storage

9

and loss moduli. Nevertheless, PP/ES composites retain viscosities close to that of

neat PP at shear rates experienced in melt processing. Overall, property enhancements

resulting from superior dispersion of ES in PP achieved by SSSP reveal ES to be a

promising green filler for thermoplastic.

Sullivan (2019) There is a gap in present soil–cement practice between

laboratory mixture design, pavement layer thickness design, and construction quality

monitoring. By permitting compaction of soil–cement into single-use plastic cylinder

molds, a method was designed to incorporate all three of those characteristics. The

device was a metal split-mold design that encircled a slightly modified plastic mold to

prevent specimen deformation during compaction. Compaction was accomplished

using two methods: a custom-built compaction frame (similar to the ASTM D-1632

device in principle) and a manual modified-Proctor hammer. The goals of this work

are to (a) illustrate the possibility of employing the novel technology to create

appropriate specimens and (b) describe potential applications. The novel device

compacted over 750 soil–cement specimens under laboratory settings.

Effectiveness

C, Tahan, Y. Arslan (2021) The damage caused by humanity to nature has

reached the highest level in recent years. There are many reasons that trigger this, but

one of the most important is the plastic bottles, cans, etc. that we use in our daily

lives. Unfortunately, when these products are left like garbage in nature, they cannot

be deleted from our environment for thousands of years. It poisons the soil and

shortens the life of our world. Despite all these negative effects, there is a way to
10

reduce these negative effects. It's recycling. Recycling allows products that are

harmful to nature to be recycled and used again and again, rather than throwing them

away as garbage. Some technologies have been implemented to increase the recycling

of pet bottles and cans. One of them is reverse vending machines. Reverse vending

machines aim to integrate the recycling of these bottles into daily life and raise

awareness among people. In this project, a unique reverse vending machine was

designed. The vending machine pays the person via card according to the number of

bottles thrown. Thanks to its compact design, it can work in schools, shopping malls,

markets, public institutions, in short, anywhere there is a closed area. With this project

that encourages recycling, the aim is to make recycling more common.

European Project W2 plastics (FP7) aims at fundamental change of the present status

of the plastic recycling by applying the magnetic density technology as well as the

ultrasonic imaging technology to develop a separation device for the recycling of

polyolefins from complex wastes. Numerical algorithms have been applied to

simulate the magnetic fluid (magnetized water) for separation of plastics. The device

used is divided into three sections: laminar section, separator section, collector

section. Laminator section tries to make the flow laminar, in separator section the

particles are separated according to their densities under magnetic field, in collector

section each kind of particles flows at different height (Moureaux et al 2010). At PTC,

at North Western University a patented breakthrough technology for plastic recycling

has been developed that eliminates sorting process by type and color of the plastic.

This technology called solid state shear pulverization (S3 P), is a continuous one-step

process for recycling unsorted pre- or post-consumer plastic waste. Plastic waste can
11

be separated by size separation technique using Trommel separator and vibrating

screen by the size of wastes.

D, Kumar (2014) a company must focus on the improvement of its

performance by reducing waste, reducing cost, improving the productivity, quality

and satisfying the customer demands. OEE being derived from total productive

maintenance (TPM) is used to achieve the above goals in this paper. The equipment

effectiveness in a plastic pipe production industry was calculated. The data related to

the production of various diameter pipes manufactured for different months were

collected. The data related to the planned scheduled time of machines, stoppages,

production time, total production for certain shift or period, number of pipes rejected

were noted and the three basic metrics: percentage of availability, performance rate,

quality rate were calculated. The OEE value 79.38% was obtained before

implementing TPM. The 6 major losses were encountered and by implementing the

program of continuous and organized improvements of the production processes were

carried out. The OEE value after the implementation was 85.44%. Thus, due to

implementation of TPM the overall effectiveness of the equipment was improved by

reaching the world class score. OEE in this paper helped to analyze, monitor and

measure the percentage of utilization and identify causes related to the effectiveness

of the equipment.

He (2018) Customers have praised the high-speed universal shredder for its

excellent efficiency, energy conservation, easy operation, wide application range, and

small size. However, its electrical motor can overheat while operating, preventing the

shredder from running continuously. A number of initiatives were undertaken in this

12

study to solve this issue. First, a complete investigation of the shredder operating

principle was performed, and an optimization strategy consisting of drilling

ventilation holes in the original shredder surface was presented. The granulated

machine flow field was simulated before and after optimization. The findings of the

hydrodynamic simulation were utilized to undertake a steady-state thermal study of

the granulated machine, looking at the effect of the flow field on heat transmission.

Furthermore, experimental studies were conducted.

K, Kumar (2022) Electronic waste is becoming a societal concern. Because e-

waste contains toxic compounds, the massive buildup of e-waste and its recycling by

rudimentary ways for precious metal extraction is a major worry in poor nations.

Recycling e-waste using correct technology, on the other hand, is regarded a viable

industry in industrialized nations owing to the presence of valuable metals (such as

gold, silver, and so on) in printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, the current

recycling costs are not practical, and as a result, a large volume of e-waste is

transported to developing nations such as India, China, and Brazil, where labor is

cheap and environmental rules are not strictly enforced. This article proposes an

outsourcing paradigm in which the formal and non-formal sectors participate equally.

Ruij (2015) Separation of plastic from various types of waste streams

represents one of major problematic process in energy recovery through different

thermochemical processes. The sorting of plastics is a very essential step in different

waste management technique. Manual sorting is suitable when plastic component is

present in large amount but it is a labor-intensive process. In automated sorting

technique NIR (near infrared) offers great advantage among all wave sorting
13

technique but not suited for dark colored plastic and can be used on transparent

bodies. In air sorting lighter particles are separated from heavier ones based on

specific gravity. In electrostatic sorting method materials are separated based on

electrostatic charge. In float-sink separation technique the plastics are in a fluid that

has density in between the materials making it possible for less dense material to float

and heavier to sink whereas sorting by selective dissolution is based on batch

dissolution of mixed plastics using solvents. Hydro cyclones enhance the difference of

specific weight by centrifugal force so materials with little difference can be separated

as well. The present paper reviews the available literatures in the area of sorting of

plastic waste for effective recycling.

The majority of e-waste, 95-97 percent by weight, consists of metal, glass, and

plastics, which can be easily disassembled and separated manually without harming

the environment; however, the remaining 3-5 percent by weight of e-waste consists of

PCBs/connectors, which require environmentally friendly recycling techniques to

manage. The principal separated items from e-waste, such as metals, glass, and plastic

parts, may be recycled by organized smelters and re-processors using traditional

recycling procedures employed in municipal trash management. The separated PCBs

and connections will be crushed by a professional agency to create a homogeneous

powder, and the assay content of the powder will be assessed to determine the value

of the PCBs. Once the appropriate price has been determined, the non-formal sector

can sell the PCBs to formal recyclers for further processing. This approach will allow

the formal recyclers to concentrate only on processing PCBs, which requires

technologies, specialized skills and expertise. The said approach will eradicate the
14

unhygienic practice prevailing in non-formal units in developing countries and

thereby will stop polluting environment, soil, water, and will also protect the health of

the worker. Once the outsourced model is established, the recycling of e-waste

business will again be viable. It will also ensure the higher yield of metal recovery

from e-waste as well as minimum landfill.

Maintenance

Brunner (2012) solid-state shear granule (SSSP) is a novel processing

technology for mechanochemical polymer modification, polymer mix

compatibilization, and exfoliation and dispersion of fillers in polymer

nanocomposites. The SSSP approach is subjected to a thorough parametric research in

order to understand the detailed mechanism of the process and provide the

groundwork for a variety of current and future operating situations. We altered

machine type, screw design, and feed rate to generate a range of shear and

compression applied to the material, which can be measured by specific energy input,

using tidy, single component polypropylene (PP) as the model material (Ep). Ep, as a

universal processing variable, represents the degree of chain scission in the material,

which correlates well with the magnitude of physical property changes.

Fullna (2019) The shortcomings of contemporary plastic waste management

systems pollute the natural ecosystem. Although around 75% of plastic trash

originates in underdeveloped nations, a substantial 25% originates in Western

countries, owing to the inefficiency of collection systems and low recycling rates.

Global plastic output has nearly doubled in the previous decade, and it is expected to
15

rise more. This chapter includes a thorough examination of current waste management

pathways as well as present recycling and recovery alternatives. There are two

categories of plastic items to consider: stiff and flexible materials. These materials

behave differently and are typically treated individually. Plastic waste sources can

also be various, although they are often divided into two categories: post-industrial

and post-consumer.

Jun, L lei, F (2010) It used to comminute the green crude fiber crops such as

straw and forage with common granulated machine at present. It’s inefficiency and

high energy consumption could not meet the requirements of comminution. There are

no professional machining products is available. So, there is objective necessity to

study the machining machinery for the green crude fiber crops, such as straw and

forage. This paper mainly introduces the design ideas, design schemes, and the

determination of performance parameters as well as the working principle of the

machining machinery for the green crude fiber crops of straw category.

Wang (2021) Waste tire rubber (WTR) resource recovery is recognized as the

most appropriate solution for these solid wastes. This investigation investigated the

interactions between WTR and high-pressure water jet in order to better understand

the mechanisms involved in the and devulcanization of WTR (HPWJ). According to

the findings, WJPul may be described as a mechanochemical process for WTR.

Rubber devulcanization is mostly induced by compressive shear failure, resulting in

fine ground tire rubber (GTR) particles, whereas HPWJ erosion primarily enhances

rubber depolymerization, resulting in coarse GTR particles. Chemical interactions

between the devulcanized GTR from WJPul and asphalts have been seen, yielding in.
16

Xue (2012) Metal-plated plastics (MPP), which are crucial for aesthetics as

well as performance, are rapidly being used in a wide range of applications in the

automobile sector. If they are not treated properly, they will cause serious

environmental concerns. As a result, MPP recycling is a vital topic not only for

resource recycling but also for environmental conservation. This work is an

innovative approach to dealing with the MPP. To separate the coatings from the

plastic substrate, a self-designed hammer crusher was employed. The Rosin-Rammler

function model was used to examine and explain particle size distribution. The

optimal material retention duration in the crusher is 3 minutes. The liberation rate of

the materials might reach 87.3 percent at this time. When the suspension's density is

high.
17

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research design, population of sampling technique,

data gathering procedures, tools and equipment, research instrument

and statistical treatment.

Research Design

N. Rodelas & M. Ballera, (2021), The researchers will use developmental

research method in this study. A developmental research method is defined as the

study of design, development, and evaluation of products, programs, and processes

that meet the criteria of effectiveness and consistency. The evaluation of the final

product is implementation. It facilitates the study of new tools, models, and

procedures so that the researchers can anticipate the efficiency and effectiveness of

the system. The researchers used an agile methodology that is used to develop

products through iterations of the process. This methodology is effective specifically

when the project can be divided into many small tasks, with lots of creativity, and

must be developed to fit with the stakeholder’s expectations.

The developmental method of research was used in this study because it

follows the procedure and processes of further enhancement and development. It

developed the research studies by the standards to determine the acceptability the
18

research in terms of its durability, effectiveness, and maintenance as manipulating

variables.

Subject of the Study

Figure 2 shows the design of the Plastic Granulated Machine. The main parts of this

research project are shredder, electric motor, reducer motor, customized sprocket,

chain, push-button switch and plug. When the plug is on, push the on button and the

shredder will start to operate. The reducer motor will reduce the force that the electric

motor can provide and it will give a right amount of force that the granulated machine

needs to granulate the plastic bottles properly.

19

Population and Sampling Technique

The researchers conducted a selecting procedure for the testing and evaluation

of the Plastic Granulated Machine. The researchers identified ten (10) barangay

officials from Barangay Patimbao, Santa Cruz, Laguna and twenty-five (25) barangay

citizen as a respondent of the research-project. The researchers used convenient

sampling technique for the selection of respondents to determine the durability,

effectiveness and maintenance of the Plastic Granulated Machine.

McCombes, S. (2019), it is rarely possible to conduct research to group of

people to collect data from every person in that group. Instead, the researchers must

select a sample. The sample is the group of individuals who will actually participate

in the research. To draw valid conclusions from your results, you have to carefully

decide how you will select a sample that is representative of the group as a whole.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers consulted old and previous thesis, internet, and from actual

observations. It is to achieve a desired output and design; reliable procedure and deep

analysis will be considered.

Data gathering on the selected area of application of the design project is

necessary to know the possible capability and further innovation that can be added to

the project. The components of the Plastic Granulated Machine were also taken into

consideration and all information obtained is processed carefully for project.

The damage caused by humanity to nature has reached the highest level in

recent years. There are many reasons that trigger this, but one of the most important is

the plastic bottles, cans, etc. that we use in our daily lives. Unfortunately, when these

products are left like garbage in nature, they cannot be deleted from our environment

for thousands of years. It poisons the soil and shortens the life of our world. Despite

all these negative effects, there is a way to reduce these negative effects. It's recycling.

Recycling allows products that are harmful to nature to be recycled and used again

and again, rather than throwing them away as garbage. (C, Tahan, Y. Arslan 2021)

Metal-plated plastics (MPP), which are crucial for aesthetics as well as

performance, are rapidly being used in a wide range of applications in the automobile

sector. If they are not treated properly, they will cause serious environmental

concerns. As a result, MPP recycling is a vital topic not only for resource recycling

but also for environmental conservation (Xue, 2012)
