ABSTRACT

The excessive use of unnatural materials such as plastic, rubber,

glass, silicone and others cause severe environmental hazards like water pollution,

soil pollution and air pollution. Normally, it takes about 1,000 years for plastic to

decompose. Burning them causes bad effects to the ozone layer. The crisis does

not only end in the environment, these materials also have negative impacts to

humans.

The researchers wanted to change the preferences of consumers on using

wood-based products instead of the non-ecological ones. With this small effort to

contribute something to save the earth, the researchers aspire that the project may

lead to greater ideas which could help to totally eradicate plastic, rubber, and

silicone.

This study aimed to create and evaluate an organizer, made out of wood,

called “Az Piraso De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer”. With the questions, (1)

What are the materials needed for the new product “Az Piraso De Madera: A Multi-

Purpose Organizer”? (2) What are the steps in the preparation and presentation of

the new product “Az Piraso De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer”? (3) What is

the evaluation of the evaluators on the new product “Az Piraso De Madera: A

Multi-Purpose Organizer” in terms of Functionality, Durability, Originality and

Innovativeness, Affordability, and Marketability?, and (4) Is there significant

difference in the evaluation of the evaluators along the dimensions cited?

The development of the new product utilized the experimental procedure

with the following phases: Settling on the materials and procedure.

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL viii

The data gathered were treated statistically and interpreted through the

following tools: mean and one sample t-test.

The salient findings of the study are as follows: (1) On the Evaluation of

the Product Evaluators, the evaluation of the product evaluators on the new

product along the set criteria are: Functionality (x=4.76), Durability (x=4.71),

Originality and Innovativeness (x=4.49), Affordability (x=4.52), and Marketability

(x=4.68). These results yielded an “Excellent” rating as evidenced by the mean

rating of (x=4.63). (2) On Significant Difference Between the Evaluations of the

Product Evaluators, it was found that there is a significant difference in the

evaluation of the product in terms of functionality, durability, originality and

innovativeness, affordability, and marketability. This implies the rejection of the

hypothesis used in the study.

It is then recommended that (1)The experimental product “Az Piraso De

Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer” is suggested to be published and endorsed in

shops. (2) It is recommended to add more features such as a sliding door, more

dividers, or even mirrors and glass for the purpose of multi-functionality. (3) Add

another layer either above or in the side of the product to add more space to the

product.

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The excessive use of unnatural materials such as plastic, rubber, glass,

silicone and more cause severe environmental hazards like water pollution, soil

pollution and air pollution. These materials, especially plastic, is used across

almost every sector, including in packaging, in building and construction, in

textiles, consumer products, transportation, electrical and electronics, and

industrial machinery. And on day-to-day living, people mostly use these kinds of

materials for their home products and also in storing their goods. But then

normally, it takes about 50 years for a rubber to decompose, 1,000 years for plastic,

and a million years for glass. And burning them causes bad effects to the ozone

layer. The catastrophe does not only end in the environment, these unnatural

materials also have negative impacts to the human race.

Indiscriminate disposal of wastes from plastics and plastic products can lead

to environmental pollution which is evident in several ways including

environmental natural beauty deterioration (Andrady AL 2003), entanglement and

death of aquatic organisms (Hofmeyr GJG et al 2006), sewage system blockage in

towns and cities especially in developing countries (dane L, Muleta D 2011),

resulting in creating conducive environment for breeding mosquitoes and other

disease causing vectors and production of foul smells (Ellis S, Kantner S, Saab A,

Watson M 2005), reduction in water percolation and normal agricultural soils

aeration thus causing reduced productivity in such lands (Njeru J 2006).

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2

Plastic, rubber, glass and other non-ecological materials do not also stand

out when it comes to using them as a material for products. For first, rubber is not

the most performance efficient material and its physical properties prevent it from

becoming a sturdier substance, despite its not-so-sturdy properties, it is higher in

cost than any other materials, and due to being biodegradable, rubber does not have

a very long lifespan. Second, manufacturing of glass is a highly energy consuming

process due to high temperatures required for processing the raw materials and

consists of disadvantages such as brittleness, corrosion due to alkali solution,

heat transparency, unsafe for earthquake-prone areas, and heat absorbent. And

lastly, the majority of the pollution found in the world's oceans is plastic. People

cannot infinitely recycle plastic products, and plastic pollution can lead to several

economic losses. That is why the only way to avoid these crises is to use the safest

material in every product that a person can have, and that it is the wood.

Wood is a greenhouse positive product with a lower net environmental

impact than most other building materials, such as emission-intensive steel,

aluminium, or concrete. It is one of the only building or product materials that

contribute to the long term reduction of carbon emissions: positively addressing

climate change. And the process of manufacturing timber uses substantially less

fossil fuel energy per unit volume than steel, concrete, or aluminium: minimising

the amount of pollutants created during the process. This means that building with

one cubic meter of wood, in place of other construction materials like concrete,

blocks, or bricks, can save up 0.75 to 1 tonne of CO2 emissions (International

Institute for Environment and Development and The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon

Management, 2004).
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3

By taking this single step, utilizing woods instead of the non-ecological

materials such as plastic, rubber, silicone etc., will result a big impact to the only

home of all livings things, Earth. People may ask where to get them, the answer to

that is whenever producers make products using a tree, they should repay it by

planting more than one tree. In this way, trees will always be available.

The researchers wanted to change the preferences of consumers about

using wood-based products instead of the non-ecological ones. With this small

effort to contribute something to save the earth, the researchers aspire that the

project may lead to greater ideas which could help to totally eradicate plastic,

rubber, and silicone. As on what George Bernard Shaw said, “Progress is

impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot

change anything”.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to create and evaluate a new product “Az Piraso De

Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer”.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the materials needed for the new product “Az Piraso De Madera:

A Multi-Purpose Organizer”?

2. What are the steps in the preparation and presentation of the new product

“Az Piraso De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer”?

3. What is the evaluation of the evaluators on the new product “Az Piraso

De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer” in terms of the following:

a. Functionality,
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4

b. Durability,

c. Originality and Innovativeness,

d. Affordability, and

e. Marketability?

4. Is there significant difference in the evaluation of the evaluators along the

dimensions cited?

Significance of the Study

This research focused on the marketability of Az Piraso De Madera: A

Multi-Purpose Organizer. The study can significantly help the marketing strategy

of the business as it helps to provide key insights and information.

The results of the study will greatly benefit the following:

The Potential Customers. The results of the study will help the potential

customers share and get what they prefer, like, or hate in a product which will lead

them to have something they can purchase according to their likes and taste.

The Producers/Researchers. The study will aid the producers or the

researchers opportunities in the marketplace. It will tell if the new product planned

by the researchers may not or be what the market wants or needs.

The study will also identify potential problems by the consumers‟ reaction

to the new product when it is still being developed. This will enlighten the

producers/researchers any further development so it will suit on its intended market.

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 5

Scope and Delimitation

The objective of this study was to develop a new product called “Az Piraso

De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer”.

The development of the new product utilized the experimental procedure

with the following phases: Settling on the materials and procedure.

The evaluation of the product, on the other hand, made use of the survey

method subjecting the product to evaluation as to functionality, durability,

originality and innovativeness, affordability, and marketability.

The product evaluation included 15 respondents which are Business Owners

and Customers.

The data gathered from the product evaluators were treated using the

statistical tools: mean and one sample t-test.

Theoretical Framework

On Functionality

Functionality is the means to accomplish the feature. It can be one among

many ways to perform a task (feature), or a minor part of a feature. According to

Paget, functionality is how those features actually work to provide a person with a

desired outcome. When a person starts to think about functionality, he/she will be

able to gain a better understanding of what the system can actually do instead of

what it says it can do. This will put the person in a better position to decide which

system will be able to provide him/her with the most value.

In information technology, functionality (from Latin functio meaning "to

perform") is the sum or any aspect of what a product, such as a software application
ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 6

or computing device, can do for a user. A product's functionality is used by

marketers to identify product features and enables a user to have a set of

capabilities. Functionality may or may not be easy to use.

Instead of deciding on whether product performance or design is more

important for brand success it is important to analyze the perceived customer value

for the product. Theodore Levitt explains, "They buy something that transcends

these designations-and what that "something” is helps determine from whom

they‟ll buy, what they‟ll pay, and whether, in the view of the seller, they‟re "loyal”

or "fickle. (Levitt, Jan 1980)” As explained by Theodore, these something that

transcends for the satisfaction is met by both the functionality of the product and

the design. But it can be argued that functionality of a product is more of an

expected trait. With market having limited funding and resources the best thing a

marketer can do is segment target and position strategy to effectively and

efficiently differentiate their product and increase their market share.

On Durability

According to Spacey, durability is the ability to endure expected conditions

over time. It is a type of quality and realibity that is associated with long lasting

items that don't break with stress.

No matter the product in question, durability is always a key concern. As

just a single aspect of the product manufacturing process, it has a surprisingly wide

reaching set of implications. This includes not just the practical advantages it offers,

but also the economical and environmental benefits it provides too.

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 7

The physical durability of a product has lots of immediate practical

advantages to its end users. The easiest example to use is that of storage. Storage

containers (such as the Az Piraso De Madera: A Multi-Purpose Organizer) need to

be durable as a rule – if they split or crack, it not only costs a person the price of

replacing the containers themselves, but quite often their contents too.

While durable products can often be initially a bit more expensive, that

initial cost quickly balances out in the long term. Cheaper, less durable products are

naturally prone to much more frequent breakages, which means that repair or

replacement expenses can quickly ramp up, making ultimately them more costly.

Durability refers to the power of a product to keep its efficiency for a long

period without remarkable deterioration. The durability of a polymer depends on its

chemical structure and the conditions the polymer is going to be subjected.

Opposite to biodegradable materials, petroleum-based materials are considered

durable. c: Safoura Ahmadzadeh, Amin M. Khaneghah, in Encyclopedia of

Renewable and Sustainable Materials, 2020.

On Originality and Innovativeness

` Creativity can be understood as being a multidimensional construct,

involving cognitive variables, personality characteristics, family, educational

aspects, and both social and cultural elements. These dimensions interact with each

other according to individual thinking and creative styles and are therefore

expressed and found in many different ways (Sternberg, 2010; Wechsler, 2008).

Therefore, the creative phenomenon has been studied under the most different

approaches, sometimes emphasizing the person, or the process or products, the

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 8

environment, or even the interaction between two or more of these variables, thus

implying that creativity has multiple ways to be identified (Alencar & Fleith,

2008; Nakano & Wechsler, 2012).

Innovation has been valued as a necessary individual characteristic in the

globalized world. Taken as a concept of multidisciplinary interest, research on this

phenomenon has been developed in several areas of knowledge including

administration, education, economics, psychology and sociology, among others. As

a concept, innovation has been defined as the development of the product or

practice of new and useful ideas to benefit individuals, teams, organizations or a

broader range of society (Bledow, Frese, Anderson, Erez, & Farr 2009). Then, there

is the need to clarify that innovation is not just a matter of coming up with a new

idea but also requires a valuable product. In this case, “product” is not limited to a

tangible object but can also be a seen as a process to increase production and

reduce costs in a way not yet tested in that specific context (Cropley, Kaufman, &

Cropley, 2011).

The term “Innovation” is always linked to the insertion, implementation or

development of an idea, product or service for the purpose of utility in society.

Given its amplitude, different types of innovation were defined by the Organization

for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, 2016) as the following: a)

product innovation is the application of an idea or service that has undergone

substantial development, the feasibility of which may be related to its functionality

or other techniques that make new uses for that idea or service possible; b) process

innovation, referring to the development of new methods to achieve a given

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 9

production; c) organizational innovation, or new types of organization or means of

administering organizations; and d) marketing innovation, whereby new methods

are used to obtain the development of products and their associated packaging,

forms of cost and promotional publicity.

Given the globalization of business, which has increased the international

mobility of managers and the tendency to expand innovative activity across

countries, it has become increasingly important to understand the relationship

between the processes of creativity and innovation (Candeias, 2008). Innovation is

valued not only for individual and organizational performance but also for

economic success and social development at the global level (Westwood & Low,

2003).

Creativity has been described as the most important determinant of

innovation, as explained by Amabile (1988). In this sense, creativity is important in

itself and can be conceptualized as a necessary precondition for innovation (Joo et

al., 2013), although this would depend not only on creativity but also on external

sources such as the market and its regulatory forces, so that the connection between

the two concepts cannot be considered simple and linear (King, 1995).

In the challenge of considering the relationship between the two important

themes, it should be noted that both creativity and innovation have historically been

complex phenomena, subject to innumerable contextual and social influences.

These variables deserve multiple views so that they can be known and understood

in the different fields of knowledge (Giglio et al., 2009).

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 10

By innovation, meaning changing one‟s business model and making changes

in the existing environment to deliver better products or services. Successful

innovation should be a part of one‟s business strategy, where he/she can create a

culture of innovation and make a way for creative thinking. It can also increase the

likelihood of his/her business succeeding and can create more efficient processes

that can result in better productivity and performance.

For that, business owners need innovation and creativity to find new things.

Try adopting and creating new ideas that will help a person grow beyond his/her

competition. (4 Important Benefits of Innovation in Business, 2018)

On Affordability

Customer affordability is a term sometimes used to signify that something is

inexpensive or reasonably priced. The definition of customer affordability is often

associated with the acquisition or purchase of a product, service or a PSS at a low

price which the buyer is willing to pay. Bankole et al., (2009) examined the

definition of affordability across different sectors which revealed that it is generally

explained as the provision of products and services that are affordable to the

customer given their budget allocation. The following definitions were identified

from the aerospace and defence industries. Customer affordability is „the ability to

procure a system as the need arises, within a budget, operate at a required

performance level; maintain and support it within an allocated life-cycle budget

(Kroshl and Pandolfini 2000); „degree to which the Whole Life Cycle Costing

(WLCC) of an individual project or program is in consonance with the long range

investment capability and evolving customer requirement‟ (Ray et al 2006); 'the

degree to which the life cycle cost of an acquisition programme is in consonance

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 11

with the long-range investment and force structure plans of national defence

administrations‟ (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) 2007). The

definitions above reveal that the subject is emerging within these industries. Kroshl

and Pandolfini (2000)‟s definition includes maintenance and operation of the

system or product over the expected period of life which is done by the

manufacturer in availability contracts. These authors believe that customer

affordability definition should address multiple cost considerations for example,

total operating costs from cradle to grave. Chytka et al (2006) explained that life

cycle cost analysis is a systematic approach of applying economics in deciding the

best solution for a design over the useful life of the system while affordability

analysis employs the outputs of a life cycle cost analysis to apply investment

strategies over the life cycle of a system like reserve strategies, etc. This shows the

relationship between life cycle costing and customer affordability. Overall, these

definitions have two elements namely: the cost of investment and the customer‟s

income or budget. The standard definition adopted in this paper is Ray et al. 2006‟s

definition which was developed by the NoE in AE at Cranfield University.

On Marketability

` Marketability study is an analysis for a specific client of the likely sales of a

specific type of product. A market analysis or study is an effort to glean

information from the market on prices, quantities, and type of product that is selling.

A marketability study presumes a particular product and seeks to determine its

market price and rate of sales. (All Business)

Every market analysis begins with a market study of the broad, or

macroeconomic, influences on a subject property. A market study always precedes

ILOCOS SUR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 12

a marketability study, which uses the data gathered in the market study of a

property type in the general market area. The marketability study adds to the

market study data and focuses the study on a specific property in a specific market

area. (Marketability Studies)

The definition of product marketability varies depending on the company.

Essentially, marketability is a measure of whether a product will appeal to buyers

and sell at a certain price range to generate a profit. Marketing communications

include public relations, advertising, trade shows and collateral production, as well

as other functions such as product quality assurance and documentation. Prior to

attempting to market products, the product developers should complete a

marketability evaluation. This helps marketing managers and other executives

determine whether the product(s) is marketable in the current and future market.
