Lesson Title: Weight
Grade Level and Course: SLS Grade Six / Mathematics (Real World Math)
Time Segment of Lesson: 45 minutes

Standard(s) Addressed in Lesson:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.1
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several
measurable attributes of a single object.

Overarching Unit Goal(s):

● The learner will be able to describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or
weight.
● The learner will be able to compare one item against another in terms of weight, length,
etc.
● The learner will be able to read standard units to measure weight used in food packages
or when cooking (grams, cups)
● The learner will be able to measure the length or weight of an object by selecting and
using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, measuring cups, weighing scale, etc.

Objective(s) of the Lesson: Learner will be able to ...

(Remember SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound)
● Learn to use non-standard units to measure.
● Read and understand standard units used in food packages and in cooking.
● Measure and use appropriate tools and standard units when measuring weight.

Student Diversity and Differentiation of Instruction

Identify students who will need differentiated instruction for this lesson.
Student Diversity Differentiation of Instruction

● Providing material with large font text

Student with ID ● Allow extra time
● Reinforce learning by using real-life examples and
environments
● Present information in a range of formats –
handouts, worksheets, overheads, videos – to
meet a diversity of learning styles

Formative and Summative Assessments- include open ended questions that will lead
students to think deeply about the content and will also build on prior knowledge.
Formative Assessment Summative Assessment

- Guided practice There will be no summative assessment in

Identifying various everyday objects if it's this lesson.
heavy or light (concrete)

- Independent work
Short quiz using Kahoot to Identify various
objects if it's heavy or light (semi-concrete)

- Guided practice
Using a weighing scale to identify heavy and
light objects (abstract)

- Exit ticket
Arranging objects is from lightest to heaviest
using a weighing scale to record weight .
- Learning about grams and cups

● If there is no summative assessment in this lesson, what/when will the summative

assessment be/take place

Questions for formative assessment during and/or after the lesson

1. Which object is heavier? Which one is lighter?
2. Which instrument can we use to measure weight?
3. What does the print (250 grams) in food packages tell you?

Big Ideas to be Addressed in the Lesson:

Learning the concept of heavy and light. Identifying the right standard units used to measure
weight.

21st Century Knowledge and Skills

21st Century Knowledge and Skills Teaching Strategies

Critical Thinking Independent work - identifying heavy and

light objects.

Communication Independent work and guided practice -

identifying heavy or light objects

Technology literacy Independent work - answering a quiz using

Nearpod

Literacy Skills
Describe the literacy skills (if any) covered in this lesson and how it will help improve the students’ reading skills
such as comprehension, oral language, phonetic or phonological awareness, fluency and vocabulary as applicable.

● Vocabulary - using right vocabulary when comparing the weight of two objects.
● Reading - learning to use information indicated on food packages.

Teaching Strategies and Related Student Activities (Include Web 2.0 activities and
innovative strategies,as appropriate):

Teaching Strategies and Activities:

What are the teaching strategies and activities that you plan to use to help students meet the lesson’s
objectives? What are the steps that you will take to deliver this lesson (e.g., introduce the author, read the poem,
ask students to…)? Make this section as detailed as possible. It should allow you to hand it off to a substitute
teacher.

● Warm-up (5 mins.)
1. Greet the learner. Check-in to see the mood of the learner.

a. Remind the learner of the expected behavior when having a lesson.

b. Use thumbs up or down to check the learner's understanding of the
expected behavior.

● Introduction of the lesson (5 mins.)

2. Briefly talk about the agenda: lesson topic, learning objectives, and activities.

● Guided practice/ Teacher Modeling (10 mins.)

3. Guided practice - Teaching with hand-on and sensory experiences.
Show various everyday objects. Ask the learner to identify things that are heavy and
things that are light.

Ask the learner to identify a new set of objects by asking “which one is heavy/
light?”
Instruct learner to answer using the statement - “the ____ is heavier than _____”
or “the____ is lighter than ____”

● Independent work (10 mins.)

4. Ask the learner to access Nearpod using his computer and answer the quiz. Identifying
heavy and light objects.

● Guided practice (15 mins.)

5. Using a weighing scale to identify heavy and light objects. Then, introduce a digital
weighing scale and practice weighing objects and practice reading what’s displayed in
the digital weighing scale.

6. Bring flour or rice, water, and measuring cups. Use the weighing scale to measure the
ingredients.

Ask the learner to read the measurement in the digital weighing scale by asking
“how much does 1 cup of water weighs”
Instruct learner to answer using the statement - “1 cup of _____ weighs _____
grams”

● Exit ticket (5 mins)

7. Using a worksheet, the learner will practice arranging the object from lightest to
heaviest using a weighing scale to record weight.
