What This Module is About
This module deals with strategies that include application of decision-making skills and
the use of resistance skills in different situations related to substance use and abuse. Decision-
making and resistance skills will help you enhance your knowledge, skills and attitude in facing
and overcoming real-life situations. You will practice these skills in class and will be guided by
your teacher. You will also learn healthy alternatives to prevent the use of drugs of abuse.
Before you go through this learning module, you need to answer the pre-assessment
which checks your prior knowledge, processing and understanding of the topics.
Healthy alternatives to prevent the use of drugs as part of this module will keep you
understand and informed that even a drug dependent has its alternative ways to heal and
change themselves into better ones.
Lastly, this module is very important to each and every one of us to learn and be
knowledgeable about the use and abuse drugs. How these drugs has the capability to destroy
lives. And that’s why you need wise decision skills in order to avoid that.

What I Need to Know

This lesson deals on how to prevent and control the substance use and abuse. The lesson
will teach you how to make Decision-making skills and the of use Resistance skills in different
kind of situation. It will enhance your knowledge in deeper understanding, thoughts and ideas
and the attitude in facing and overcoming harmful situation in life. You will have activity in the
class that will enhance your capability as a student and be guided by your teacher. And also
provide some suggestion about healthy alternatives to prevent the use of drugs of abuse.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
• Apply decision-making and resistance skills in situations related to substance use
and abuse

Lesson to Substance Use and Abuse

What’s In

The lesson contains with Healthy Alternative ways to prevent drug abuse. This is to
create a diversion technique in keeping away from people from using drugs.

People are start abusing drug including tobacco, alcohol, and illegal and prescription
drugs-during adolescence and young adulthood. Many factors influence whether adolescence
use drugs, including the availability of drugs within the neighbourhood, community, and school.

The teenage years are the most dangerous stage when it comes to drug influence
because their brains are developing and exploring. Their thinking is immature and because of
curiosity the more they are get into trouble.

The healthy alternative ways will help to avoid drug use and abuse. Don’t stress lead
to using drugs, alternatives to self-medication can start with good sleep, exercise, and eat
regularly and healthy meals. Also in focusing physical strength and fitness as for recreational
activities can avoid to drugs use and abuse.

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to;

What’s New

Healthy Alternative – are healthy tips and ways to avoid substance use and abuse. These
are diversion act to keep from using drugs. It will help sharpen your mind and will think
straight and made a right decision

Tips:
1. Involved in healthy community activity
- Is working with community to improve the built environment as part of Active
people.
- An equitable community is one that offers complete social, physical and mental
well-being.

2. Keep yourself busy
- Create new challenge, you must talk to your favourite fictional characters, read
some books to keep your mind busy and might travel alone.

3. Eat properly don’t skip meals


- Skipping meals can also cause your metabolism to slow down, when you skip a
meal or go a long time without eating, eating regularly can keep you think well
and good.

4. Be engage in sports
- Through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve
physical ability and skills. It will help you fight depression and anxiety.

5. Sleep well
- It plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting
enough quality sleep at the night times can help protect your mental health,
physical health, quality of life and safety.

6. You must not have a long break


- It provides opportunities for people to learn important life skills, that when people
mingled together, they learn how to take turns, resolve conflicts, and solve
problems
Also manage their own emotions and behaviour and fundamental skills for life.

Summary

Drug is good when it is used to treat people’s illnesses, it can help to eases the pain
of the person who uses it as treatment. The present drug scenario in the Philippines is
changing. The local and international drug syndicates are being apprehended and prosecuted
as mandated by the law.
The proliferation of drug use and abuse is the result of greediness of people to earn
more money from drugs and create an issue of health concern in the society. In the Philippines
the most commonly used drugs are shabu, marijuana and inhalants or solvents.
The government along with non-governmental organizations and private institutions
find alternative ways to prevent and control the spread of drug addiction and dependence in
the country. These healthy alternatives are effective strategies to educate, advocate and
promote a drug free-community and instill in our youth that drugs are not good and will only
destroy their lives and that their family and community
