Lesson 4. Mathematics as a Language

Highlights

A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language.

Mathematical rhetoric is the way humans investigate to produce meaning, in

order to communicate and interact with others. When mathematicians make
decisions influencing the viewer's reaction, it engages rhetoric. Mathematicians
solve problems to discover new mathematical approaches or concepts.
Furthermore, math is rhetoric in the sense that both grammar and syntax are
symbols and words that are utilized to build a complete concept.

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each.

a. Comprehensive – has a group of vocabulary and parts of speech

specifically Math has all characteristics present in many other languages.

b. Concise – Mathematics is non-ambiguous, do not ramble extraneous

information.

c. Precise – Uses mathematical language; utilizes symbols to make it

accurate and appropriate. It does not deal with the complexities of
ramifications; thus it expresses elements as they can be, not as they
could be understood.

d. Powerful – Mathematical language can be used in its field.

e. Non-Temporal – The mathematical language does not have any tense of

verbs, duration, or severity.

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language?

a. Noun (numbers) – represents quantities; these are isolated elements

where no action is carried out.

b. Pronoun (variables) – letters/symbols that represent numbers

c. Verbs (relation symbols) – are used to compare or relate two separate

components. It is used to express the amount or equivalency.

d. Connectives (operations) – to concatenate numbers and symbols in a

single function.

e. Punctuations (grouping symbols) –it is used to collect and cluster a group

of numbers and operators.

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence
a. Mathematical Expression
i. x + y
ii. 5x - 3y - 9
iii. x^2 + x + 1

b. Mathematical Sentence
i. 4 is a composite number
ii. 5+3=8
iii. 2x^2 + x + 1 = 10

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set?

Set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following:
1. Union of A and B= {x| x ∈ A or x ∈ B}
i. Set of elements in set A can also be seen in set B, both set A
and B

2. Intersection of A and B= {x| x ∈ A and x ∈ B}

i. Set of elements in set A and B that has the same elements

3. Complement of A ={x| x ∈ U and x ∉ B}

i. Set of elements in set B that are not found in set A

4. A – B== {x| x ∈ A and x ∉ B}

i. Set of elements in set A that are not found in set B

5. B – A={x| x ∈ A and x ∉ b}
i. Set of elements in set B that are not found in set A

6. A x B={(x,y)|x ∈ A,y ∉ b}
i. Multiplying a set of elements to another set of elements

C. What is a function?
A rule capable of assigning one set of elements to another set. It is the
relation in which each possible input value leads to exactly one output value.
A function is a relation in which no two ordered pairs have the same first
element.

D. What are the ways of writing a function?

FIRST QUARTER, SY2022-2023 GED 102 WEEK 2

a. Set Notation Form: where each set’s components are expressed as

associated into a universal set
b. Tabular Form: aggregates the x which is the independent values and y
which the dependent values
c. Mapping Form: similar to Tabular Form, but would serve as an “equivalent
kind.”
d. Formula: given the formula for a function, and evaluate. It is to replace
the input variable in the value provided and then calculate to get the
result.

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation?

Binary operation takes two input elements from a set and returns a
unique output that is also from the same set. The addition symbol (+),
multiplication (x), division (÷), and subtraction sign (-) are all used in
binary operations.

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.

1. Closure Property – the resulting value must maintain a specified set;

it involves not getting a value that does not belong to the set. For
example, an operation involving real numbers must always return real
numbers.

2. Commutative Property – The value of the binary operation is still

the same regardless of the sequence in which the procedures are
carried out. For example, regardless of whether the sequence is moved
to
5 x 10, 10x5 equals to 50

3. Associative Property – If more several components are present,

pairings can be used to assure that the overall outcome is consistent
despite the sequence.

4. Identity Property – The result of the addition, multiplication, or in

subtraction must have a constant outcome such as when adding 1 to 0
the answer is 1.

5. Inverse Property – it is a non-empty set, for each a є S can find b є

S|a*b=b*a=e
