2.1 04 Strategies for your speaking you get stuck at any question.
REMINDERS
These are not panacea to all questions in Part 1, but you can harness them when needed,
boosting your fluency and showing off your vocabularies to some extent.

2.1.1 THE FIRST WEAPON (W1)

MY FRIENDS AND I
Honestly = To be totally upfront with you, I am not a big fan of something/ I am not
good at something. But My close friend, Tèo, have a knack for this (….)

I’ve learned a couple of things from him, like (….)

But, I am still a novice/ a beginner.

Weapon 1 Knowledge
Can you draw? Are you good at art? (K1)
Áp dụng: Em không vẽ được/ nhưng bạn Honestly, I am not a big fan of art or
em lại giỏi lĩnh vực này/ Em có học hỏi drawing. But my close friend, Teo, has a
vài thứ như (mixing colors, sketching knack for this. I’ve learned a couple of
you name it), nhưng em vẫn còn gà mờ things from him, like graffi, sculpture,
lắm!!! sketching, you name it. I’ve known a
very famous painting which is the Mona
Lisa painting with an impeccable beauty.
However, I am still a novice in this field.
Notes: You can develop your own answers if possible by using good vocabularies and
ideas. Mine is just a suggestion.
I will develop further ideas for you in following sections.
Expand vocabularies:

K1 Reading the passage below_ Listening to the passage to fill the gaps.
The arts have also been classified as seven: painting, architecture, sculpture, literature,
music, performing and cinema. When it comes to painting, there are some ubiquitous
types, such as, oil painting, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, abstract painting, to
name but a few. In some countries, writing or painting on walls is a crime. In some
countries, artists can draw and paint in certain places. For example, in Taiwan, there are
'graffiti zones' where artists can paint on walls. In Bristol in the UK, there is a street art
festival in August every year. Artists paint all the buildings in a street. Lots of people
come to watch the artists and take photos. You can see exhibitions of street art in some
galleries too. There have been exhibitions of street art in galleries in Paris, London and
Los Angeles.

Who painted the Mona Lisa?

Leonardo da Vinci, artist, scientist and inventor of the Italian Renaissance, is the painter
of the Mona Lisa and is considered one of the most versatile polymath with an
impeccable beauty of all time. There are various interpretations of the smile; some say it
is a happy smile, others find it deceptive, and still others believe it is a sad smile.
Mona Lisa’s smile is TOOO mysterious, NOT MINE. :D you can enjoy mine :D better to
enjoy, shining, bíu ty hớn nì!!! ha ha ha :D

CAN YOU SING?

CAN YOU COOK?

Task 1 Apply W1 into your answer if possible

W1 Knowledge
Can you cook?
Em không thích và không giỏi nấu ăn.
Nhưng bạn thân của em, rất giỏi lĩnh vực
này. Em có học từ bạn ấy một số thứ cơ
bản như … nhưng em vẫn non nớt lắm :D
Expand your vocabularies

K2 (from quora)
A) Not everybody out there has a knack for cooking! It takes a lot more than just
mixing things up and coming up with a dish. If it weren't for art, we would be still
eating raw and bland food. If it weren't art, nobody would have bothered about
Masterchef shows and books. If it weren't for art, our lives would have been
missing out on a lot! Cooking, in itself, is a wholly different dimension of art.

B) How to make spaghetti: The most popular way to cook spaghetti is simple. Put the
pasta into plenty of boiling water, stir it, bring it to a simmer, turn the heat off, put
a lid on, and leave it to finish cooking for 10-12 mins. Then you can use sauce and
enjoy your meal. I love spaghetti with clams, which is a perfectly classic
combination

2.2 THE SECOND WEAPON (W2)

THE PAST – THE PRESENT – THE FUTURE

K4 – Listening to the passage to fill the gaps below

I love dogs as they are loyal animals, they’re always there no matter waht, and they have
a bit of characters, then they can lift your spirit up when you are feeling down. I am
interested in birds, too. It’s really refreshing to relish their chirping every morning if you
live in the countryside like me. What fascinating me is the view of the competition
between what seemed like hundreds of birds singing their heart out in the forest.
Pets are companions of humans, and nothing beats the feeling you’re coming home and
having a dog wagging his tail to see you. I've got a minimum of 2 dogs at home/ they are
living in a kennel in my garden. They are very adorable, trainable, and could do hundreds
of tricks to entertain people. A couple of years ago, I had a pet dog, his name was Mon
but sadly he succumbed to an ovarian tumor. This event really pricked my heart and
welled my eyes. To be upfront, I really miss him.

I have set my heart on adopting some aristocratic dogs, such as Corgis, which is a
symbol of royal and toy doys but this breed seems very melancholic.

Task 3 Answer these questions with W3

Do you like to study science? When I was younger, I had been

daunted by the idea of studying science
because it is difficult for me to
remember those things. But since my
teacher, Mary has taught me by the
new ways such as mindmap, picture,
this has grown on me. I see this subject
really fantastic.
Do you like to live in big cities? When I was younger, I had been
daunted by the idea of living in
metropolises because I hate the
crowded and noisy places. But since
my sister has moved to the big cities to
study and work, I can see she has a
wide range of opportunities for the
higher paid jobs, high salaries, you
name it. This has grown on me. I see it
really appealing.

name stars.

Martin: Oh, you’re a film snob. I bet you only watch indie films made on a shoestring budget with low
production values.

Joanna: No, that’s not true. I just don’t like crowd-pleasers that are predictable. I like movies that
stretch the imagination and have some artistic value.

Martin: You mean you like those weird movies with no plot and a lot of strange characters. They’re
artsy, but leave you totally confused.

Joanna: I don’t mind some ambiguity, if that’s what you mean.

Martin: Well, I’m going to see the new Spiderboy movie next week. I don’t suppose you want to
come?

Joanna: Spiderboy? I’ve been looking forward to seeing that movie.

Martin: But it’s a big-budget blockbuster.

Joanna: I can’t watch artsy films all the time. Variety is the spice of life, don’t you think?

a. How can we say when someone often receive good grades at
school?
b. What is a synonym of “a challenging task”
c. Can you tell some science-related subjects?
Do you like science?

It depends. I have a natural aversion to natural science such as

math, chemistry, or biology, and I'd been feeling a bit daunted by
the prospect of passing the exams of these subjects. But it seems
that I was born to learn social science such as philosophy, arts, and
literature which capture my interest the most. I had never been fed
up with this stuff in my class.

 Finding the synonym of “dislike”

 Finding the synonym of “being tired”

When did you start to learn about science?

Well in primary school, if I am not mistaken at the age of 7 or 8. I

still remember vividly how fascinated I was learning about growing a
plant seed. Our teacher asked us to soak the seed in a container and
after three days, it germinated. As a kid, that was the most
stimulating lesson since it developed my ability to question things.
When I grew older a bit, I started learning some other things about
natural science such as gravity, the flora, the fauna, and the human,
but I was often loathed with this stuff.
