OVERVIEW
Dear learners, you are now in your Music Module 2. Congratulations for completing
the 1st module in Quarter 3. Let me remind you to always review your lesson and practice
constantly because all of the lessons are still in connection with the previous one. Do good in
your activities; pre test post test and assessment.

Module 2 talks about the element in music Timbre. It discusses the different
instruments in the orchestra used in the Western country.

This module consists of two lessons:

 Lesson 1 : Timbre.

 Lesson 2 : Instruments of the western orchestra.

At the end of the module, you are expected to:

1. define Timbre and the different sample instruments.

2. differentiate the characteristics of the instruments.

3. appreciate the musical instruments.

also give you an idea of the different musical instruments that is related to Timbre; common
instruments that is already familiar to you.

In the previous lesson, you have learned about forms in music. Forms let you
identify and differentiate the sections in a song; sections having the same and different pitch,
melody and rhythm.

Below are the different Forms in music:

A. Unitary Form - it contains only one section which remains the same all throughout the
whole song or composition.

B. Binary Form (AB) - made up of two musical parts or has two different melodic ideas.

C. Ternary Form (ABA or ABC) - made up of three parts or three different melodic idea.

D. Rondo Form (ABACA) - made up of five or more musical parts with some repetitions.

What is It

There are two types of pictures given above. Picture A shows a group of
people singing while Picture B shows a group of people playing an instrument.

This shows the classification of instruments and voices. it has different definition and
sections depending on the range of each instruments and voices. below are the definition of
the classification of instrument and voices.

CLASSIFICATION OF VOICES

FOR FEMALE VOICE:

 Soprano – it is the highest singing voice.


 Mezzo Soprano – it is in middle or medium singing voice
 Alto - it is the lowest singing voice.

FOR MALE VOICE:

 Tenor - it is the highest singing voice.


 Baritone - it is in middle or medium singing voice
 Bass - it is the lowest singing voice.

mouthpiece called the Reed.

What is It

The picture above shows the classifications of the instruments according to


their section in the orchestra. An orchestra is a large instrumental group usually playing a
classical music. It has 4 sections and each instrument has a specific characteristic.

A. String Instruments/ String Section

 Violin – the leader and heart of the orchestra. It is played by moving the bow across
the strings.
 Viola – a little larger than the violin.
 Cello – larger than the viola. Played by players between the knees using a bow.
 Double bass – largest among the stringed instruments.
 Harp – stringed instrument that is played by plucking the strings

B. Woodwind Instruments/ Woodwind Section

 Piccolo – the smallest instrument in this section.


 Flute – the only woodwind without a reed.
 Oboe – the most dramatic among the woodwind instruments
 Clarinet – a cylindrical instrument with a cup-shaped mouthpiece and bell at the end.
 Bassoon – called the “clown” of the orchestra for having a long curving metallic
mouthpiece
 Saxophone – looks like a brass instrument. Usually heard during romantic songs.

C. Brass Instruments/ Brass Section

 Trumpet – the main instrument of the brass section


 Trombone – the only sliding instrument in this section
 French Horn – a 12-feet long and sounds more mellow than the trumpet.
 Tuba – the largest in the brass section and has the lowest pitch.

D. Percussion Instrument/ Percussion Section

 Timpani – also called a kettle drum. The only percussion with a pitch.
 Snare Drum – usually seen during parades and festivals in a drum and lyre corps.
 Bass Drum – the largest drum and has the lowest pitch.
