Introduction

Hello young future musicians! You have acquired the basic concepts about the
musical notations and the Major Keys. These skills will help you in creating simple
melodies. In order to read, identify and transcribe musical notations, you need to be
familiar with the relative minor key of the major keys and accidentals. And now, in this
module you will learn also about scale. Scale is basically the language of the specific
music you create. We create melodies in composing a song. Today, you will learn how
to create simple melodies and sings self-composed melodies. As you already know
that melody is one of the fundamental elements of music. It is considered as the theme
of a composition. A note is a sound with a pitch and duration. Put together a series of
notes one after the other and you have a melody. It catches your ear as you listen.
Are you ready to learn a new musical knowledge? Come on and let’s get it
started!

The following Second Quarter Week 2 Most Essential Learning Competencies that
will be discussed in this module are:
• Creates simple melodies. (MU6ME-IIa-4)
• Sing self-composed melodies. (MU6ME-IIa-5)

At the end of this module the pupils are expected to:

K - Analyze the pattern of major and minor scales.

S - Creates simple melodies and applied concepts learn.
A - Engage the pupil/s to participate actively in the given activity.
V - Show love of country through composing a song and creating its simple melodies.

Activity:

Questions:
1. Now what have you notice while singing?

Mini-Lesson

A Whole Steps or whole tone is

composed of two half steps. Thus, the
distance between C to D and F to G is a
whole step.

Illustrated by Jeanlie Rose Gumilao

A Half Step or semitone is the shortest
distance between two notes. For instance,
the distance between C and C# to D, E to
F, and G to Gb is a half-step.

Illustrated by Jeanlie Rose Gumilao

Accidentals alters the pitch of tone. These are the symbols used to raise or lower
the pitch of a note.
Flat ( b )- lowers the note a half step.
Sharp ( # ) – use to raise the note in a half step.
Natural (  ) – cancels any previous sharp or flat made on the note.
Observe how the accidentals are place on the staff. Locate each note on the model
keyboard provided.

In every major scale, there is a corresponding minor scale. Both major and minor
scales use a specific pattern of whole and half steps.

Major Scale Pattern: WS WS HS WS WS WS HS

Minor Scale Pattern: WS HS WS WS HS WS WS

5
Each Major key has a relative and corresponding natural minor key. In order to know
the relative minor key of a major key, look for the note in the sixth scale degree. For
instance, in the C major scale, the sixth scale is “A”. Whereof, the relative natural
minor key of the C major is the A minor.

C Major: C D E F G A B C

A natural minor: A B C D E F G A

After the relative minor key has been identified, start to construct the scale on the staff using
the pattern WS-HS-WS-WS-HS-WS-WS.
