SIGNIFICANCE OF IP GROUPS IN THE SOCIETY


The Philippines is a culturally diverse country with an estimated 14-17 million
Indigenous Peoples (IPs) belonging to 110 ethno-linguistic groups

There are two main ethnic groups comprising upland and lowland indigenous tribes
living within the Philippines – from the northern and southern parts of the Philippines.
Igorot Tribes from the
Northern Philippines

● residing in the mountain ranges of the


Cordillera Region.

● popularly known for being rice cultivators.

● An assortment of the group called the


Ifugaos built the Banaue Rice Terraces
Lumad Tribes from the
Southern Philippines
Lumad
● a Cebuano term which means ‘native’ or
‘indigenous.

Comprised of 13 ethnic groups which are the:

● Blaan, Bukidnon, Higaonon, Mamanwa, Mandaya,


Manobo, Mansaka, Sangir, Subanen, Tagabawa,
Tagakaulo, Tasaday, and T’boli.

Customs & Practices

Clothes & Garments

The attire for male is commonly called as bahag while females wear
saya, an ordinary woman’s skirt covering the body from waist to
feet.

Surigaonon (Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Sur, some portions
of Agusan del Norte, especially the towns near the Mainit Lake, Agusan del Sur
and Davao Oriental)
