CASE STUDY 1 – CHN


In the case study, the problem presented is the inaccessibility to safe water
making the people in the community susceptible to diseases and the ethical mistake
and negligence of Amos the brother of the chief of the barangay who took opportunity in
out of the situation. The prevalent disease that rose in the community is the Guinea-
worm infection, a waterborne disease caused by the consumption of contaminated
water. Due to this Health Centre drew up a training programme to address the problem
and as well as to educate the people in the community with the emphasis of self-help, in
matters of first aid to cuts and wounds, treatment to simple problems like fever and
diarrhea, and lastly health and nutrition of children. But we will focus on the problems
that were mentioned earlier.

Questions that are discussed in the paper:

- What went wrong with the programme?

 The turning point of what went wrong before the participation of primary health
programme is when the chief of the barangay went to discuss with his two
brothers about this matter and later on decided to send Amos, his one brother,
with a primary level school attainment years ago go for the health centre for
training as per mandated to have one representative to each barangay to
participate in the programme.
 This then, turned Amos to take opportunity in the situation in the community were
he had bought drugs to sell to the people in the community at a higher price and
neglecting the responsibility in training and educating the individuals in the
barangay in making self-help efforts to dig wells and protect springs. It allowed
him to have money to support his personal
