Programming the configuration parameters

1 Entry into the configuration mode
This programm has been made to allows the adding of a display for heat integrator (op-
tionnel).
It allows to work in automatic exposure mode with falling load.
On start you will have in the display unit used for kV the state of the heat integrator:

11 Less than 3 hours has been passed. The integrator calculate the time.
44 Error of checksum. The integrator is set at 0.
55 More than one day without power supply. The integrator is set at 0.
66 More than 3 hours without power supply. The integrator is set at 0.

Turn the commutator S2 on the control card so as to illuminate the LED «CONFIGURA-
TION.
At the end of modifying the configuration parameters, do not forget to reset the commutator
on «NORMAL» position, so as to be able to use the generator.
The generator starts in the mode which allows you to define the installation.
The display unit normally used to adjust the graphy kV becomes the EEPROM configura-
tion parameter number display. The display unit normally used to adjust the graphy current
becomes the parameter value display. The adjustment keys corresponding to these display
units allow a selection of the parameter to be modified and the adjustment of the value of
the selected parameter. The validation / invalidation key of the automatic graphy mode
permits the modified parameter to be stored in the memory. The corresponding blinking
LED reminds the user that he must store on memory the value that has been modified.
Forgetting to press this key will not affect the contents of the configuration EEPROM.
The configuration EEPROM contains 256 bytes of which only 196 are accessable to the
user.
Note: It is the operator’s responsibility to correctly program the configuration memory. A
faulty functioning could be the result of a faulty programming of the configuration memory.

3 Parameter description
PARAMETER 0: MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POWER OF THE POWER SUPPLY
Minimum value: 1
Maximum value: 80
Parameter unit: kW
Parameter signification: Maximum possible power of the power supply.
Explication: This parameter is used by the calculator on one part for calculating the inter-
dictions to determine if the power requested by the operator for an exposure exceeds the
power supply’s capacity; in order to avoid its deterioration. On the other part this parameter
displays the highest values possible of the high-voltage current in the case where an
80kW power supply is used.
You can enter any value between 1kW and 80kW. But the typical values are: 40 for a
50kW generator not equiped with a primary transformer, 50 for a power supply equiped
with a primary transformer, and 80 for a power supply of 80kW.
Note: The calculator uses a binary calculus arithmetic exempt from decimal numbers; it
is possible you will notice a small error of calculus due to a rounding-off in the intermediary
calculus of interdiction. In any case, the error by the calculator will not affect the function
security of the generator.

Explication: During the installation of the generator, you may find it necessary to validate
the graphy second time authorization when an external apparatus is ready. In this case
the interface board contains an input which must be validated when outside equipment
authorizes the graphy second time.
By validating this parameter you create a condition for the request of the graphy second
time which will result in the following: the operator requests the graphy second time and
the input of external validation of second time is validated. If during an exposure, the
external validation input of second time disappears, the exposure is interrupted in the
same way as if the operator had released the second time button.
Enter 0 as the value for this parameter in order to have the graphy second time take place
without validation by an external signal.
Enter 1 as the value for this parameter in order that the generator takes into account the
input state of second time external validation.

Tube characteristics definition

1 Passage into the tube characteristics definition modeE
If you desire to define or modify the characteristics of tube 1, turn the commutator S2 on
the control card so as to illuminate the LED «DEFINITION TUBE 1 «.
If you desire to define or modify the characteristics of tube 2, turn the commutator S2 on
the control card so as to illuminate the LED «DEFINITION TUBE 2 «.
The generator then starts in the chosen tube characteristics definition mode.
At the end of a modification or definition phase of the tube characterisitics, do not forget to
return the commutator S2 to position «NORMAL» so as to allow for the use of the generator.
The display unit normally used to adjust the graphy kV becomes the EEPROM parameter
number display. The display unit normally used for the adjustment of the graphy current
becomes the display of the data value of the display address.
The adjustment keys corresponding to these display units allow for the selection of the
address to be modified and the adjustment of the selected parameter’s value.
The automatic graphy validation / invalidation key allows for the modified contents to be
put on memory. The blinking LED corresponding to this key reminds the user that he
must put into memory the value that he has just modified. Forgetting to press this key will
not make a change on the contents of EEPROM.
The EEPROM configuration contains 256 bytes accessable to the user.
Note: It is the operator’s responsiblility to correctly fill these EEPROMs. A faulty function
can be the result of a faulty programming of the memory.

3 Record of the tube load characteristics

From the pages on the X-ray tube characteristics you should determine the numerical
values of the maximum power permited for each one of the two focuses in function with
the specific exposure times and the high-voltage values.

The power values are given in kW by units of 0.5 kW.

Determine the maximum power permited on the small focus for exposures during:
0.020 second
0.050 second
0.100 second
0.200 second
0.500 second
1.000 second
2.000 seconds
5.000 seconds
Enter these eight values in cases 0 to 7 of the tube’s EEPROM memory.

4 Measurement of the tube emission characteristics

The management program of the generator allows for a listing of the tube’s emission
characteristics.
Beginning with address 34 the display unit normally used for the graphy mA, displays the
value of the heating current in mA.

The listing of these emission characteristics consists of finding the heating current value
supplied to each tube focus to obtain a high-voltage current at a certain high-voltage va-
lue.

The automatic listing program for the emission characteristics effectuates short exposures
of about 20 ms to 30 ms measuring the high-voltage current and then automatically sto-
res the results in the EEPROM memory.

The automatic system begins by displaying certain specific addresses from EEPROM:
•Address 34 permits a measure of the group of emission characteristics at 40 Kv
•Address 48 permits a measure of the group of emission characteristics at 80 Kv.
•Address 62 permits a measure of the group of emission characteristics at 120 Kv.

When you display an address permiting a listing of the emission characteristics, the display
unit normally used for the scopy kV, displays the kV value where it affects the measurement.

Note that if you interrupt the measuring phases during a group of tests, you must start the
phase again from the beginning. It is impossible to begin a group of tests in the middle.
When the program obtains an emission characteristic that it is seeking, it stores it on
memory. The operator is informed by a buzzer signal, and the program passes to the
following address. If the address that follows is the beginning of another phase of tests,
the system stops so you can mark a pause.

To start a group of measurements you must press the graphy second time. The graphy
first time is not taken into account, as it is automatically created by the measurement
managing program.

During an exposure, the program displays the value of the high-voltage current
measurement. The heat is raised each time up to approximately a maximum value of 5.5
ampéres. If the listing becomes impossible due to a limitation of the load characteristics
or if the maximum heating current is attained without having obtained the necessary high-
voltage current, the program sounds a buzzer and stores a special value in EEPROM
indicating the impossibility of the measurement.

Ref : 32-40-013-C
67
Chapter 2 / Technical manuel

A measurement impossibility is shown by the display unit as «- - - -» on the heating

current display. During a listing be sure to survey the temperature of the different elements
such as the high-voltage power supply and the tube housing. Also, be sure to observe a
pause of 10 minutes between each group of measurements.

If a problem arises during a measurement phase, it can sometimes be resolved simply by

switching the generator off and on.

After the completion of the measurement phase, it is advisable to verify the emission
characteristics measured by going back to the normal function of the generator and trying
several radiography exposures in several groups of constants which cover the range of
the generator and tube’s possibilities; for example:

40 kV 10 mA 0.050 second
40 kV 20 mA 0.050 second
40 kV 50 mA 0.050 second
40 kV 100 mA 0.050 second
40 kV 150 mA 0.050 second
80 kV 50 mA 0.050 second
80 kV 100 mA 0.050 second
80 kV 150 mA 0.050 second
120 kV 50 mA 0.050 second
120 kV 100 mA 0.050 second
120kV 150 mA 0.050 second
40 kV 600 mA 0.050 second
etc...

If you notice that certain values do not give the expected results, it would be necessary
either to re-do the corresponding group of tests, or manually correct the heating current
value. While certainly not indispensible, an oscilloscope can be connected on the test
point of the tank’s high voltage current measurement for verification.

5 Compensation of the heating current

Finally, you must adjust the compensation parameters of the heating current (parameters
76 to 89) so as to obtain a stable high-voltage current during an exposure.
