INTRODUCTION

Education is one of the most important aspects of human resource development. The

students’performance plays an important role in producing best quality graduates who will become great

leaders and manpower for the country thus responsible for the country’s economic and social development.

Academic achievement is one of the major factors considered by employers in hiring workers especially for

the fresh graduates. Thus, students have to put the greatest effort in their study to obtain good grades and to

prepare themselves for future opportunities in their career at the same time to fulfil the employer’s demand.

Students’ performance determines quality of education that will be passing to the students by the potential

teachers at primary and secondary school levels. Poor performance in college spells doom for the students

whose life becomes uncertain and full of misery. Students’ academic performance is affected by several

factors which include students’ learning skills, parental background, peer influence, teachers’ quality,

learning infrastructure among others. Government efforts to improve academic performance have led to

series of interventions like scholarship, training of the lecturers, providing of infrastructure and so on.

Working is now a fundamental responsibility for many undergraduate. But understanding how it

affects students' educational experiences complicated by why students work. Many students must work to

pay the cost attending college. Students work regardless of the type of institution they attend, their age or

family responsibilities, or even their family income or educational and living expenses. Most working

students face many challenges in their busy everyday lives. They encounter problems upon coping with their

academic engaged time. Studying a specific course in college is not only about paying the fees rather the

most important things here are the time and effort spent. Student jobs have become a sort of trend among

students around the world, who want to work while they are studying. In short, the trend that suits this trend

is "Earn and Learn" policy. Other reason why student jobs are popular among students is they help to cope

up with the constant increase in tuition fees, and a way to afford further educations. The problem has been

developed with the question what are the possible problems met by working students. The primary objective

of the study is for working students to overcome conflict between their corresponding academic tasks and

required working hours as against their studies. In addition this study aims to provide encouragement and
motivation to all students especially those who are financially distressed to pursue their college degree in

order to be

competitive in the future and be able to realize their goals and aspirations. It may also provide learning

experiences and information to other students who are not working.

In the Philippines a large number of students participate in a part time employment during the year.

A part time employment is perceived as beneficial for teens (Pickering andVazsonyl’ 2002) and necessary

for adolescent development. Students can have a glimpse of their future job determine whether they actually

like that particular career path. Also part time jobs canhelp students improve time management skills and

become more efficient. Parents and educatorsare favor of employment among students because they believe

that employment ‘buildscharacter’. Dwyer et al. (2001) argue that combining work and study promotes a

‘pragmatic perspective on education. Teachers need to consider the situation of these working

studentsespecially that they are coping with their requirements from time to time. They should see their

physical struggle which regular students less experience in the classroom.Studying needs a relaxed frame of

mind and for the working students, who are oftentired from working may not have a better academic

performance. Kleinschmidt (2013) points outone of the negative effects of working and studying which is

plain exhaustion from the routine ofbeing constantly on the go. The less sleep students get, the more likely

anxiety and stress heighten as they try to keep up with their jammed-packed schedules and it may cause

through unsettled thinking leads to become moody and uncomfortable in socializing with other.

Students face different difficulties that might affect their academic performances. This may include

factors like working while attending school. Many students force themselves to work while studying. One of

the causes of this is not being able to support their education financially. Yet it seems like other working

students don't really have a problem financially. They do part-time jobs related to their future career to help

them enhance their skills. Nevertheless most of the students work because of financial complications.

Working while studying isn't a simple task, especially for those students who work for more hours than their

studying hours. Working while studying full time can be a challenging situation. This can require a lot of

effort and time between studies and work. Attending school and working at the same time is hard enough. It
will bring a high probability of repeating or dropping out of the students who are unable to focus on their

studies while doing part time jobs.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the students’ difficulties in studying and working. The study seeks to
answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Employment

1.4 Civil status challenges

2. What are the challenges met by students in meeting their schedule?

3. What solutions can be proposed to address the challenges?

Figure 1. The Paradigm of the Study

The research paradigm illustrates the conceptual framework of the stud shows the relationship of the
input, process and output of the topic. This frame embodies the specific direction by which the research will
have to be undertak describing the relationship between specific variables identified in the study.

The input consists of the research method applied in conducting the resi regarding the study habits
and academic performance of the working students Qualitative research undertaken to gain insights
concerning attitudes, beliefs, (motivations and behaviors of individuals to explore a social or human problem
include methods such as focus groups, in-depth interviews, observation resean and case studies.
The process on the other hand shows how the research being conducte through defining the
problem/s of the research first and gather the required data relevant to the research from the respondents
through answering the question.

The output as a result, will indicate the general view of the situation on hc the behavior and
performance of a student relates on their study habit and acad performance. Conclusions are to be made to
know and define the outcome of thi study and give justification to the research.

METHODS

This section presents the research design, research locale, respondents of the study, the procedure to
be undertaken in gathering the data needed, the instrument to be used and the statistical treatment of the data
gathered.

RESEARCH DESIGN

A qualitative research is used in this study. This approach concerns about understanding and
interpreting the meaning that participants provide to their everyday lives (De Vos, 1998). The qualitative
approach centers around characteristics of human conduct (Ferreira, Mouton. Puth & Schurink, 1998). The
qualitative design manages information that is principally verbal and gets significance from the participant's
point of view and also expects to comprehend the meaning that individuals append to their daily experience
(Favor and Higson-Child, 1995; De Vos, 1998). A qualitative approach is the most appropriate approach for
this study; the reason is because of its data collection procedure which focuses on the participants' subjective
experiences on the disclosure progress and the procedure how it is interpreted. Marshall & Rossman (1995),
further elaborated that if a research study aims to uncover the unexpected and to explore new avenues, the
most suited approach is the qualitative approach.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This study will be conducted at Osias Colleges, Inc. It was established in 1949 and it is the oldest
private educational institution in Tarlac City. It was founded by Telesforo Concepcion and Senator Camilo
Osias. Mr. Concepcion is an alumnus of the University of the Philippines, a retired School District
Supervisor of Victoria, Tarlac, and recipient of Outstanding Educator Award by then Bureau of Education.
He was the school’s Director/Chairman of the Board until 1963 while Mr. Osias was a foremost statesman,
distinguished writer and educator who became the first Filipino superintendent of schools under the
American rule.
As years went by, the population grew that necessitates expansion to accommodate more pupils and
students. Adjacent lots were acquired to expand into a sprawling spacious campus and construct better
classrooms which will be more conducive to learning and continues to expand its services to the community

and to prepare graduates who are globally competitive. This is the chosen location because the respondents
were all students at the mentioned institution.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study involved seven (7) working students who are currently enrolled in the
Teacher Certification Program of the College of Education. They are working from different job sectors in
Tarlac.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Prior to the dissemination of the research instrument, permission will be asked from the office of the
Supervisor of the said institution to conduct a survey. Only after the permission was granted, the
questionnaire checklist will be distributed to the selected respondents of the study inside their classroom
before their class starts. Then when the answered questionnaire checklist are retrieved, the data collected will
be tabulated for appropriate statistical treatment.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The instrument used in this study is questionnaire-checklist and it is adapted. Some modification has
been done but need to be submitted to experts for validation. The main purpose of this questionnaire is to
evaluate the respondents' problems and difficulties during their school days as being working student. The
first part of the questionaire is the profile of the respondents regarding their age, gender, civil status,
major/course and occupation. Part II are the challenges of the respondents.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The study is qualitative, statistical tool is not needed. However the data to be gathered will be
categorized based on the key points, then coded and after the encoding, the themes for the responses will be
created.
