PRACTICE 5 : WORD FORMS

Why Do We Enjoy Watching TV?

Just about every one, young or old, enjoys watching television. Just why do we enjoy watching
television so much? One reason could be for (1) (escape). For example, when we watch a hero
rescuing a lady or a child, we can pretend or imagine ourselves doing it. We can (2) (fantasy)
ourselves performing that (3) (hero) act. There is nothing wrong with this, as long as what is shown
doesn’t promote (4) (violent) and (5) (hate).

Television also allows us to indulge our natural curious nature. Watching a television scene
makes us a silent (6) (observe) of the lives of others. We watch families having problems and solving
them. We learn of their heartaches and crimes.

Some critics have argued that watching television is a big waste of time. Many adults turn to the
television as a form of (7) (relax). Fewer children are reading books because of television.

However, there are many television programmes that are (8) (education) such as those on the
National Geographic channel or the Discovery channel. Television shows such as these bring knowledge
and education to its viewers.

In (9) (conclude), it is alright to watch television but you must strike a balance between
watching television and other activities such as sports, making time for family and friends, reading and
hobbies. You should choose the programmes that are (10) (benefit) to you. Remember, the other
name for the television is “ the idiot box”.
