STRUCTURAL THEORY
I. Theory of Structures: Part 2 (CONTINUED)
A. Slope and Deflection on Beams
- Slope is the rotation or angle of the curvature of the elastic curve of a beam.
- Deflection id the bending deformation or from the original reference line of the an axis (either horizontal or
vertical)
- Elastic curve is the theoretical graph of the bending deformation of the beam.

B. Methods in solving the slope and deflection on beams

3. Area Momentt Method
a. Deflection Equation

∆ = ( )

∆ = ( )

b. Slope Equation

= ( )

TAKE NOTE:
1. Take a moment to where th the distributed load shall not hang
2. Stabilize the slope relationsh
ship to identify delta’s relationship with the deflection
def
3. In cutting sections looking at the left assumption is upward is positive, downward is negat
negative,
ive, clockwise is positive and
counter-clockwise
clockwise is negative. While ooking at the right side upward is negative, downward is positive, clockwise is negative
and counter-clockwise is positive
